I realize that this is a very busy time of year for most of us, what with the upcoming holidays and all, the family gatherings, the shopping, the annual encounters with kinfolk we can't stand (especially Uncle __________). Fill that in yourself. Everybody has one.
But there are other matters that can't be overlooked. Your writing, of course, and of the utmost importance, our municipal elections. These off-year elections are often decided by fewer than a fourth of eligible voters. Mayor, City Council, Board of Education and school budget are on the line. Since you are the smartest, best informed, and most responsible people in the city (and I really hate to waste flattery), I urge you to VOTE on November 7. --DDC |

GUEST SPEAKER FOR NOVEMBER 21: D C FIDLER

A native of the South, DC Fidler has combined a career in academic psychiatry and cultural psychiatry with a lifetime of playwriting, acting, directing, composing music, and teaching creative writing and the dramatic arts.
His topic will be:
Understanding and Expressing Emotions in Creative Writing.
When writers create characters who have emotional experiences, they can draw on the following to help them:
- Perceptions and misperceptions (sight, sound, smell, touch, taste)
- Immediate reactions (inherited-wiring reactions, experientially learned reactions, social learned reactions)
- Physiological responses (shaking, startling, goose bumps, shuttering, fainting, collapsing, attraction, repulsion)
- Emotions (internal feelings experienced due to physiological responses: love, fear, hate, anger, exhilaration
- Affects (external expressions based on true or altered/filtered emotions)
- Cognitions (memories, comparisons, judgments, assumptions)
- Defenses/solutions/actions (withdrawal, fighting, surrendering, denial, rationalizing, sublimating, intellectualizing)

MEET DAVE COLLINS
After earning a Ph.D. in English literature at the University of Wisconsin--Madison, Dave Collins taught for forty years at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri. Lots of literature--Shakespeare, American Writers in Paris--but also lots of writing courses including Magazine Writing and Editing and Creative Nonfiction.
Turning in the mid-90s from scholarly writing, he began publishing creative nonfiction which has appeared in a variety of journals (
Hawaii Review,
Pleiades,
The New Laurel Review,
The Chariton Review,
Well
Versed,
Uncertain Promise, and others).
In the summer of 2016 a chapter from the manuscript for
Accidental Activists: Mark Phariss, Vic Holmes, and Their Fight for Marriage Equality in Texas took first place in a contest sponsored by the Frank and Sue Mayborn Foundation and led to a publishing contract with the University of North Texas Press. (See KUDOS item)
When not writing, Dave enjoys his time with his grandchildren, travel (20-some countries to date), and golf (which he admits to playing in the same way he speaks French--badly, but with passion).

The Christmas Redemption
Attorney Thad Raker is a man who believes in Santa Claus. And for good reason. He's won two trials for defendants who said they worked for Santa Claus and he saved Christmas both times.
But when Raker is hired 11 years later to defend the toy company that made the most popular Christmas present in 50 years-the Reindeer Hoverboard-he becomes entangled in the greatest threat to Christmas yet. And he learns that the survival of Santa's North Pole village is at risk.
Standing in Raker's way are a large class of angry plaintiffs, an unbelieving judge, the FBI, several North Pole conspirators and Hank Snow, Raker's nemesis from his previous Christmas trials.
Raker needs all the help he can get in this, his toughest case ever, but Snow is the guardian of many secrets and has his own plans for the future of Christmas.

A Writer's Retreat in England
Celebrating Literature & Writing while visiting the sites of Roman Britain, Shakespeare's England and Modern London.
Three full days during the nine day retreat will be dedicated to touring sites of Roman Britain in Bath, the ancient complex in Stonehenge, Shakespeare's birthplace at Stratford Upon Avon, and modern London.
