AmeriCorps Volunteers Serving GardenShare
Did you know that GardenShare has had AmeriCorps volunteers involved in our mission for the last year? These volunteers make a one-year commitment to full-time work at a nonprofit organization and in return receive a small living allowance from AmeriCorps and some assistance at the end of their term.
Brianna Blackburn has served as an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer for GardenShare since last fall. How quickly a year flies by and Brianna's last day with us in November 3. While here, Brianna worked on volunteer recruitment, farmers market promotion, and strengthening our work to tell the story of GardenShare in the community. Read what Brianna was thinking as she started out on this journey and her reflections now that her year at GardenShare is winding down.
Maggie Smith started her year with GardenShare around the end of August. She will also be working on farmers market promotion and volunteer engagement, and she will be exploring summer food for children and how we might do a better job of making sure all of our kids have enough to eat when school is out for the summer. Read more about Maggie in her introductory blog entry.
Both AmeriCorps volunteers were interviewed by NCPR in September. Check it out!
Brianna, we are going to miss you and
wish you all the best! Maggie, we are looking forward to working with you for the balance of your year with us.
And, on a less positive note, we learned recently that the program under which Brianna and Maggie are serving, the Anti-Hunger Opportunity Corps, is being discontinued by the federal government. To learn more and how you can express your concern about this, go
