n OMM Workshop, taught by the NYITCOM's Department of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) and designed for the NYCOMEC's trainees and faculty, will take place on Wednesday, December 6, 2017, from 6:15 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., in the OMM laboratory located on the first floor in Serota Academic Center, NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine, Old Westbury Campus.
The workshop will be open to all ACGME programs at your hospital, however, the registrant must have a working knowledge of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine.

NYCOMEC Hosted Faculty Development Program:
The Problem Resident: Prevention, Remediation, Termination
Approximately 100 medical education professionals attended NYCOMEC's faculty development program, The Problem Resident: Prevention, Remediation, Termination, which was held on October 19, 2017, at the NYIT Auditorium on Broadway in Manhattan, NY. The symposium included several presentations on various aspects of managing the issues that arise when dealing with a problem resident and concluded with a panel discussion and robust audience participation.
After welcoming everyone, David Broder, D.O., NYCOMEC President/CEO, spoke on how to define a problem resident, the role of Human Resources in managing GME-related concerns (employee vs. trainee), the impact on program morale and patient care as a result of a problem resident, and implementing remediation and the potential termination of that problem resident.
Robert Catalano, M.D., Executive Secretary, Board for Professional Medical Conduct, gave a presentation that described the State's overarching mission to protect the public, how the Office for Professional Medical Conduct receives information on potential issues, the investigatory process, and potential outcomes on licensure.
Stacey Marder, Esq., of Weiss, Zarett, Brofman, Sonnenklar & Levy, P.C., presented the legal entanglements of disruptive physician behavior and discussed the obligations incumbent on GME leaders to protect patients, as well as their institution, when concerns with problem residents arise.
Samuel Sandowski, M.D.
, Vice President of Medical Education, D.I.O., and Director, Family Medicine Residency Program, South Nassau Communities Hospital, gave an excellent review on identifying & remediating the struggling resident, referencing the ACGME milestones as guidelines and siting several examples of best practices in remediation.
The audience then engaged in a lengthy and informative question and answer period with the panel of speakers.

The ACGME has released a second edition of its Clinical Competency Committee (CCC) Guidebook. This guide provides useful information on how to structure the CCC committee, run the meeting, and complete any follow-up work.

In 2018, the CLER program will offer Sponsoring Institutions (SI) 15 full blackout weeks each year.
Blackout weeks are intended to cover dates during which institutional staff members may not be available, i.e. religious holidays, local holidays, board meetings, retreats, etc.
During three designated times per year, the SI may submit a request to blackout up to five weeks, as follows:
- November 1-28, 2017 to enter requests for January- April 2018
- March 1-28, 2018 to enter requests for May-August 2018
- July 3-28, 2018 to enter requests for September-December 2018
In 2018, the CLER Program will automatically avoid scheduling site visits on the following weeks:
- CLER Blackout week (January 1-5, 2018)
- ACGME Annual Educational Conference (February 26-March 2, 2018)
- CLER Blackout week (March 5-9, 2018)
- CLER Blackout week (June 25-29, 2018)
- CLER Blackout week (July 2-6, 2018)
- CLER Blackout week (December 24-28, 2018)
The CLER Program will also avoid scheduling on the following days (note: the CLER Program will still schedule visits during these weeks):
- Martin Luther King Jr. Day (January 15, 2018)
- Memorial Day (May 28, 2018)
- Labor Day (September 3, 2018)
- Thanksgiving (November 22-23, 2018)
Sponsoring Institutions with a status of Pre-Accreditation or Initial Accreditation will not be contacted to schedule a CLER visit until they achieve a status of Continued Accreditation.
Please note that the CLER Program will make every effort to comply with your requests; however, there is no guarantee that you will not be contacted for a visit during the requested blackout date.

New Osteopathic Recognition Brochure Available
The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) has developed a new brochure on Osteopathic Recognition (OR), which contains the OR definition and key requirements for programs to obtain OR; describes the application process and resident eligibility for osteopathically recognized programs; answers questions about the fees for OR programs and the responsibilities of the Osteopathic Principles Committee which oversees Osteopathic Recognition; and more.

Presentations from the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education's 2017 annual educational conference and osteopathic pre-conference are now available from the ACGME's Office of Distance Learning.
Members of the GME community can access the presentations via Bridge, the ACGME's Learning Management System. Visit the ACGME

AOA Research Training Grants
On November 1, 2017, the AOA will begin accepting online applications for its Research Training Grants program. Trainees can apply to the Physicians in Research Training Program, which enables applicants to conduct a basic science, clinical, or health services research project. Projects must be designed to assess the osteopathic approach in one of these five priority areas:
Chronic Disease and Conditions, Musculoskeletal Injuries and Prevention, Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine/ Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment, Osteopathic Philosophy, and Pain Management.
The deadline to submit all Research Training RFAs January 31, 2018. The awards will be announced in June, 2018 and project start dates will be September 1, 2018.

Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, has initiated a Community-Based Palliative Care Program for patients who are suffering from life-threatening or chronic debilitating diseases.
