Annual Turkey Dinner
|
|
 The Saluda United Methodist Church's annual Turkey Dinner is Saturday, November 11, 2017, at the Saluda School Cafeteria. A delicious meal of turkey, dressing with gravy, green beans, sweet potatoes, rolls, and homemade desserts will be served from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m.
Church members will begin to sell tickets on Monday, October 9, 2017. Adult tickets are $10 per person, and children 12 years of age and under are $5 per person. You may also purchase your tickets at the door on the night of the dinner.
Take-out plates will be available, but no take-out drinks will be provided.

Church of the Transfiguration's Third Annual Holiday Bazaar
|
|
The Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration's Third Annual Holiday Bazaar will be on Saturday, November 18, from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. in the Parish Hall, 72 Charles Street, in Saluda.
This year there will be a Silent Auction featuring a beautifully framed oil painting by a local artist, a gourmet dinner, a handcrafted Noah's Ark, a beginner's guitar and much more.
Beautiful cards, bookmarks, original art and prints, handcrafted jewelry, and unique handcrafted items will be available, all by local artists. Delicious baked goods, soups, quiches, artichoke relish, jams and jellies and other gourmet items made by some of the best cooks in Saluda will also be for sale.
The Upscale Bargain Basement will have gently used home furnishings, kitchen items, costume jewelry and other exciting items that need a new home.

Saluda Bell Ringers

On November 24, the day after Thanksgiving,  The Saluda Bell Ringers will begin our 12th annual Christmas Season of manning a kettle for The Salvation Army on Main Street. We will again be located in front of M.A. Pace store. This will be each Friday and Saturday through Saturday, December 20. The hours are 11am to 1pm, 1pm to 3pm, and 3pm to 5pm. We are happy to see our veterans return each year and welcome anyone who would like to join with us and become a bell ringer. We look forward to seeing our Saluda neighbors and visitors come by the kettle this season and pray we will have another successful season of helping those less fortunate.

Polk County Toy Run 
When: November 25, 2017
Location : Saluda Fire Department, 64 Greenville St., Saluda, NC
Event Times : Registration 11:00 AM ~ 2:00 PM
Parade : Starts at 2:00 PM Sharp. Police Escort the entire way.
Registration Fee : $10.00 per person or a $10.00 or more NEW toy.
This event will feature barbeque, music, door prizes and more!
This is held the last Saturday after Thanksgiving each year. Saludians are invited to turn out on Main Street before 2pm and cheer the riders on. All motorcycle riders are invited to participate in this ride. Motorcycle riders come in from both North and South Carolina to make sure that children in need get a toy for Christmas.
The route the riders follow starts in Saluda, NC, at the Saluda Fire Department parking area with room for up to 1000 + bikes. They move out in parade fashion and travel down highway US-176 to pass through Tryon, NC, while in route to Landrum, SC. Arriving in Landrum, SC, the riders turn left and go through the town of Landrum, SC crossing over Interstate 26 in route to Green Creek, NC. Once they arrive there, they then turn North on NC-9 to Mill Spring, NC. Then riders turn West on NC-108 to Columbus, NC, and terminate at the front steps of the Court House. There will be ample parking in front of the Court House for the motorcycles to park in normal diagonal fashion. The toys are placed on the steps and wall for all to see and admire. The column of bikers each year is about 10 miles long. They travel at about 35 mph on the entire route in staggered 2 by 2 fashion.

 On Sale Now Saluda Train Tales Collection DVD
Just in time for your holiday shopping, the Saluda Historic Depot is proud to announce the release of the "Saluda Train Tales" DVD. Produced by Bob Keeton. This is a collection of best of the Friday night train tales about the railroad heritage in Saluda and western NC. The video includes tales by Bob Loehne, "Saluda Mountain," Lucas R Safrit, "NC Transportation Museum," Rodger Stroup, "Carolinas Railroad Heritage," Southern Railroad Dining Experience," Robert "Bo" Brown. A special feature is the "Flight Down the Saluda Grade," created by Bob Keeton with music by "The Carburetors," which is an aerial view of the actual railroad track from Saluda to Tryon.
There is a limited quantity available for $23 including tax and can be purchased at the Saluda Historic Depot.

Free For Kids Five And Up
The Workshop Helpers want to invite Saluda's children five and up to the workshop again this year so we can teach, inspire, and encourage them through creativity. The Workshop offers personal instruction of art projects related to Christmas in the form of ornaments and gifts. The kids get to practice their artistic ability, imagination, patience, cooperation and gratitude through art. We create projects using lots of different mediums, such as recycled products, beading, felting, food gifts, nature inspired gifts, origami, and much more. They will take home projects that will be cherished for years to come.
They aren't the only ones who benefit though...we, the adults, love to share with the kids who come. It's a wonderful experience for everyone. If you'd like to be a helper, just call Laura Fields at 828-749-4521. I encourage creative and kid-loving people (notice I didn't say women) to join us. I wouldn't be able to pull this project off without my volunteers, and for them, I am very grateful. Please join us if you'd like to be a part of something very special.
Parents, please don't bring children under five as the projects are challenging. No food or drink allowed. No unattended children and parents are allowed on art floor. We provide a special place just for you where you can do a project of your own or watch the kids without being right beside them.

SCLT Monthly Board Meeting
Join us on the first Wednesday of each month, this month November 8 at 3:00 pm, at our office in the Saluda Presbyterian Church fellowship building and find out more about our on-going projects and how you can get involved.
Please keep SCLT in mind when planning events in the coming year. SCLT has Twin Lakes and Judd's Peak which are both amazing venues to reserve for birthdays, weddings, and other special events.

Saluda Garden Club

The Saluda Garden Club will meet at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, November 13th at the Saluda Library parking lot. We will carpool to Avery's Nursery in Columbus for a demonstration on making a holiday center piece from greenery. This will be a make-and-take item with greenery, cones, etc. furnished by Avery's. However, members and guests are encouraged to bring greenery and/or other décor from home. Following the demonstration, we will have a potluck lunch. This should be a great fun event and one not to miss. Hope to see you on the 13th of November.
Please note some events may be cancelled or rescheduled due to weather or at the request of the presenter. To confirm a meeting, please call Karen McGee at 828-749-2530. We always welcome new members; so if you would like to become part of this friendly, spirited and interesting group, please contact Karen.  Dr Lisa J Broyles MD, CFMP, a holistic family physician is opening Saluda Family Medicine in association with St. Luke's Hospital. She will be seeing all ages and taking all insurance providers.
Saluda Family Medicine will be located at 1347 Ozone next to the Dancer's Extension in Saluda and will open the first of November.

"A Potpourri of Geriatric Medical Info" presentation at Saluda Fire Department on November 16, 2017

Saluda Living in Place (SLIP), an organization dedicated to helping seniors stay in their own homes as they age, is bringing Dr. JoAnne Helppie, a geriatrician and internal medicine physician of Hendersonville to the Saluda Fire Department on Greenville Street on Thursday, November 16, 2017. Coffee and registration begins at 9:45 a.m.
Dr. Helppie, the only board certified geriatrician in the area, will present "A Potpourri of Geriatric Medical Information" at 10 a.m. Her presentation is aimed at senior citizens who want to take charge of their future by eating well, exercising, being mentally challenged and being able to stay in their homes as long as possible. Learn specific steps you can take to improve your own health or better assist a friend or loved one to do so.
Dr. Helppie is the founder and chairman of Aging Projects Inc., begun in 2010. It is specially designed to help seniors, caregivers, providers and community organizations find the resources to help seniors age in place. She is excited that Saluda is participating in such an important endeavor.
Please join us on November 16 to hear Dr. Helppie speak on this very important topic. You do not want to miss this timely and most helpful presentation.

Instead, we use flowing circular movements which enable the defender to off-balance and neutralize an attack with minimal effort or bodily harm to the defender or the attacker.

As the cold winds of November sweep away the magical spell of fall colors and warmth of summer-like days, old man winter is fighting for its rite of passage to move into the Saluda Mountains. Mountain views are visible through windows opened through forest tress left naked by fallen leaves and swept clean by November rain and winds. With the bare beauty of November and its mountain shadows, gray skies, and withered stalks of summer's glory, a peaceful tranquility rests over the mountains as Saludians await the first frost and winter snow.
Summer homes will fill with holiday guests for Thanksgiving and the Saluda Tailgate Market will celebrate the end of the season with its Holiday Market. The Saluda Methodist Church will host its annual "Turkey Dinner" and downtown shops and restaurants will prepare for holiday shoppers and guests.
November winds bring change to the mountains as they blow back and forth fighting back old man winter and the smell of wood smoke begins to spew from mountain home chimneys. Hummingbirds have fled south and migrating birds are plentiful and it's time to put out back yard bird feeders again.
"There is a time for every season" and November is a time for remembrance of those who have served our country and reflection of the past season. As a stillness replaces the rush of a busy summer and fall season, Saludians show gratitude and thankfulness for being spared from Mother Nature's wrath of storms and give to, and share with, those who have been less fortunate.
Even though the weather can be "willy-nilly" in November, Saludians will delight in all seasons making the best of whatever is in store.

Sunday, November 5 marks the official end of daylight savings time and Sunday brunch at the Purple Onion for 2017. Additionally, our kitchen will close at 8 PM on Monday and Tuesday nights. We will reopen for Sunday brunch and Wednesdays the first week of May.
Sunny summer days may be gone and the beautiful clear colorful days of autumn waning, but November brings its own gifts. Cozy fires, comfort food and OYSTERS! Every Monday and Tuesday we feature oysters on the half shell, raw or roasted and $3 pints.
The Purple Onion is pleased to welcome back David Childers and the Serpents on Sunday, November 19 at 7 PM. Admission is $12 per person in advance, $15 at the door and seating will be limited. Singer-songwriter David Childers is the proverbial study in contradictions. A resident of Mount Holly, North Carolina, he's a former high-school football player with the aw-shucks demeanor of a good ol' Southern boy. But he's also a well-read poet and painter who cites Chaucer and Kerouac as influences, fell in love with folk as a teen, listens to jazz and opera, and fed his family by practicing law before turning in his license to concentrate on his creative passions.
The legal profession's loss is certainly the music world's gain. Childers' new album, Run Skeleton Run, released in May 2017 on Ramseur Records, is filled with the kinds of songs that have made him a favorite of fans and fellow artists including neighbors the Avett Brothers. Scott Avett contributes to four tracks, and Avett's bassist Bob Crawford co-executive-produced the effort with label head Dolph Ramseur. (Crawford and Childers, both history buffs, have recorded and performed together in the Overmountain Men).
In fact, it was Crawford who kick-started this album, Childers' sixth solo effort, by suggesting he reunite with Don Dixon (R.E.M., the Smithereens), who produced Crawford's favorite Childers album, Room 23 (done with his band the Modern Don Juans). Crawford also suggested tracking at Mitch Easter's Fidelitorium Recordings.
"I've made records in my living room and been perfectly happy with it. But I think ol' Bob wanted to give it one more shot," Childers says. "It's kind of like the Wild Bunch at the end of the movie, on their last train robbery."
Not that he's suggesting this is his "last train robbery." Not with songs as rich as these. Sounding like literature and playing like little movies - several are under three minutes long - they're populated by sailors, hermits, lovers and killers, facing off against fate, skeletons, good, evil, or simply the trials of everyday existence. Lust, virtue, guilt, innocence; alienation, desperation, sorrow, gratitude ... he examines these conditions with such precision - combined with music that draws on folk, rock, rockabilly, country and Cajun influences - he doesn't need lengthy exposition.

"Appassionata: The Romance of Italian Opera" an Orchard Inn Benefit for the Saluda Historic Depot

Three singers---soprano Amanda Horton, tenor John Kaneklides, and baritone Jonathan Ross--- will join pianist Daniel Weiser in this show highlighting scenes from famous operas by Verdi, Puccini, and Donizetti as well as well-known Neoplotian songs such as "O Sole Mio." All the singers have performed around the country. Horton and Ross have an incredible chemistry that has been on display in two previous fundraisers at the Orchard Inn ("Live at the USO' and 'A Night in Vienna') while tenor Kaneklides was praised by Opera News as: "the very picture of youthful optimism and potential." Dr. Weiser, founder and Artistic Director of AmiciMusic, has played in over 20 countries. He will give short talks at the concert about each composer, helping to break down the barriers between performers and audience and establishing a more informal and relaxed atmosphere.

Workshop: Painting the Interior

Painting interiors has always been a fundamental part of Impressionist painting, and particularly contemporary Impressionist painting. Capturing the light, whether natural light through a window or door, or artificial light from a lamp or other inside lighting. The walls, furniture, floors and flowers are simply a vehicle for the light to "show off". Painting these scenes can be both fun and can result in very cozy paintings. As always, in this workshop, we will learn to simplify the shapes and design of an interior scene in order to paint it in a fresh and spontaneous manner.
The workshop will be held in Jim's studio, above the Saluda Grade Café, 40 E. Main St., in Saluda, N.C. There will be lots of one on one easel time, a demonstration by Jim on Thursday, and a general critique of the day's work at the end of each day. The workshop is open to all levels, from beginners to advanced. A list of brushes, etc. will be furnished after registration.
Jim is a member of Plein Air Painters of the Southeast (PAPSE), an associate member of Oil Painters of America, and a Signature Member of The American Impressionist Society.

Remembering E.M. Patterson, Engineer of  Helper Train on Saluda Grade
The old steam engine helper is gone from Saluda Mountain. Mr. E. M. Patterson, who pushed the trains from Melrose to Saluda, a distance of three miles, for 47 years, retired at the age of 70 years. He only lived two years after he retired. Mr. Patterson went to work for the railroad when he was almost 14 years old as a water boy. He pulled a passenger train from Asheville to Salisbury and from Asheville to Spartanburg before coming on the helper at Saluda.
Mr. Patterson is best known for being the grandfather of actor Pat Hingle whose acting career began at Saluda School with a part in a school play. He went on to appear on Broadway in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, on TV in Gunsmoke, The Andy Griffith Show, The Fugitive, The Twilight Zone and countless others, and in over 100 movies, including Splendor in the Grass, Norma Rae, Hang 'Em High, and all four of the 1990s-era Batman films.
"I remember Mrs. Patterson having some of his friends to come over to their house one night. She said Mr. Patterson had been working for the railroad 50 years that day and she invited us over. When we got there Mr. Patterson said, "I am glad you all came over. I have been working on the railroad 50 years today. I'm so glad you all came today."
"Mr. Patterson was a great lover of music. He would go to a lot of our singing conventions, and would often pay the expenses of a good quartet to get them to come to our singings. He loved to hear the Carolina Ladies Quartet of Greenville, SC sing. He did not sing but it put life into a singing just to see him there; he enjoyed it so much," quoted from "50 Years Ago in Saluda," by Herbert E Pace.

Saluda Train Tales is a free monthly event to educate the community in the importance of Saluda's railroad history and the Saluda Grade. These events are at the Saluda Historic Depot, 32 W Main Street, Saluda, NC 28773. Doors open at 6:30. Presentation is 7:00pm to 8:30pm. The events are free and voluntary donations are appreciated. Memberships and Donations to the Saluda Historic Depot in 2017 will enable us to receive matching grant funds from the Polk County Community Foundation.

Benefit for Tryon Historical Museum with Emile Pandolfi - Nov. 11

On Saturday evening, November 11, the Tryon Historical Museum will present An Evening with Pandolfi at Tryon Fine Arts Center. Emile Pandolfi has agreed to return to Tryon for this performance as a benefit for the Museum.
The Tryon Historical Museum, located at 26 Maple Street in the heart of Tryon, was formed in order to Tell Tryon's Story. The museum shares tidbits of Tryon's history through photographs and rotating exhibits about the town's founding fathers and its famous visitors who stepped off the train for fresh air and decided to stay. It is the story of equestrians, artists, writers, and musicians who fell in love with the glorious mountain views, the refreshing air, and the friendly community spirit that has always embraced newcomers.
After a short incubation period and with guidance and encouragement from Tryon Downtown Development Association and the Small Town Main Street program, Tryon Historical Museum received its 501(c) 3 status and opened its doors to the public as a free museum in September 2015, just two years ago.
Because of his talent and creativity, as well as his commitment to community, Emile Pandolfi is a perfect fit for this event. He ranks among America's most popular piano artists with almost thirty recordings. In addition to his performances of Classical Music, Pandolfi is primarily known for applying a classical technique to Broadway hits and popular standards. He is also known for infusing his concerts with laughter and for romancing his audiences.
Pandolfi is actively involved with charity organizations, performing in benefit concerts for Hospice, women's shelters, the United Way, and various efforts for disaster relief. He most recently appeared at Tryon Fine Arts Center as a benefit for Parkinson's.

 "Outside Mullingar" by Tryon Little Theater Premiers
Tryon Little Theater's next show, "Outside Mullingar" is an award-winning play written by John Patrick Shanley After its 2014 run on Broadway, the play received two Outer Critics Circle Award nominations, two Drama Desk Award nominations, and one Tony Award nomination for Best Play. The Writers Guild of America awarded Shanley the 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award in Writing. Do you remember "Doubt"? Well, Shanley wrote that too, and it received a Tony Award and a Pulitzer Prize. Shanley also wrote the screenplay for "Moonstruck", starring Nicholas Cage and Cher, and he received both the Writers Guild Award and the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.
Hailed as Shanley's best play since "Doubt", "Outside Mullingar" is an intimate, ensemble play with four characters: Tony and Anthony Reilly (father and son); and their neighbors Aoife and Rosemary Muldoon (mother and daughter). Directed by Catherine Gillet (a playwright herself), this poignant story will run for two weekends: November 9-12 and November 16-19 at the Tryon Little Theater Workshop, 516 S. Sassafras is excited to welcome jewelry designer Ettamarie to our store! She's a local artist that resides in Asheville, NC. She's been making jewelry for 30  years and has been making it available for sale for about 10 years now. Her designs are unique, and many of her necklaces can be worn 3 different ways, which makes them a very versatile piece, and a great gift as well. This very special event will begin at 4:00 with a delicious array of Italian Hors D'oeuvres and cash bar. The concert begins at 5:00. Cookbook Donation
A special thank you to Holly Wilkes for donating a vintage Saluda cookbook after we shared the story from Our State Magazine about the need for cookbooks. (See last month's Saluda Lifestyles.) Her treasured cookbook was put together in 1956 by The Saluda Book Club. We will send this book to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro's (UNCG) Rare Books in the Martha Blakeney Hodges Special Collections and University Archives at UNCG's Jackson Library.

Pat Robinson Oral History
We appreciate Pat Robinson for participating in an oral history interview with us in September. Did you know Pat attended The Juilliard School? It is widely regarded as one of the world's leading music and dance schools, with some of the most prestigious arts programs. Pat specifically studied the organ. Pat lives on Henderson Street with her brother Marcus. They have lived in Saluda for many years.

 Green River Race
The 22nd Annual Green River Narrows Kayak Race will be held on Saturday, November 4 at high noon. Over 100 racers, passing through the most majestic section of the river, and from all over the World, will compete for the first place trophy. The spectators that make the trek down Pulliam Creek Trail (off of Big Hungry Rd) will witness someone kayaking The Gorilla every minute for almost 2.5 hours. It is said this is the "greatest show in all of sports." The energy is electric and the fun factor is always high.

Tryon Garden Club
The Tryon Garden club meeting on Nov 15 will feature Charles Wilson discussing 18th century naturalist Andre Michaux. Andre Michaux, a French botanist traveled all over the Southeast collecting botanical specimens and recording information about our area. The Tryon Garden Club meets at FENCE, 3381 Hunting Country Rd, Tryon on Nov 15. Our program begins at 2:00. It is free and all are welcome.

Join conservation scientist JJ Apodaca, the Carolina Climbers Coalition (CCC), and Conserving Carolina in learning how climbing and conservation are linked. Conserving Carolina and the CCC have partnered on several public recreation access initiatives in Hickory Nut Gorge; they will discuss exciting projects that have recently expanded climbing access in the area. Ecologist and CCC Board Member Laura Boggess will join Dr. Apodaca to present on the uniqueness of our local cliff ecosystems. They will also describe ways in which climbers can identify rare species and minimize habitat disturbance, further supporting conservation and access to more protected lands.
Guided Hike to Pinnacle Mountain
November 17 @ 8:30 am - 4:00 pm
Join us for a moderate 5.5-mile hike to Pinnicle Mountain in Table Rock State Park in South Carolina. Hikers interested in attending the November 17th hike are asked to meet at the Spinx in Gowensville, SC (at the intersection of Hwy 14 and Hwy 11) at 8:30 a.m. to check in and start the approximately 40-minute drive to the parking area at Sliding Rock road. Hikers should be prepared to return to the area in mid-afternoon. For your safety, do not attempt any hike beyond your ability and experience. Hikers should wear appropriate clothing and footwear; bring a bag lunch and/or snack and plenty of water. Please be sure to bring any personal medication that you may require.

Walking On the Road
If you have a car and travel the roads around Saluda, and pass either an old friend or a stranger and stop to offer him a lift - they, every one, respond the same. You say, "Do you want a ride?" and they say "Don't care if I do." You don't stop for females unless you have a female in your own car.
Henry Thompson was a nice man. He was Homer and George and John's daddy. He drove a fine mare mule and a top notch one horse wagon with a good high seat on it. He was on the road more often than others, but when you met him in his wagon he always had time to stop and "chat" a little.
One day we met him on the road and my Daddy "whoaed 'ole Joe, and Henry "whoaed" his mule, and they visited across the wheels. My Daddy mentioned how good Henry looked for their ages, and this is what he told my Daddy about the Thompson men, "Charlie," he said, "us Thompsons is sorta' like a hickory nut. We get some age on us and then sort of swivel up, and then I God we're here to stay!" I could say "amen" to that.
There were a lot of things that happened to us while we lived in the shack on Huckleberry Ridge, and I'm sure I'll come back to something from up there before we're through. When we moved to our new summer house down next to Case's Branch, with running water by gravity and a shower house and kitchen, our world started to change. Mr. Goforth, over the winter, tore down the old shack,
improved Jackie Thompson's old house, built a cow barn and some other good things. My big sister, Libba, was becoming a young lady. She had lots of young friends that visited from our neighborhood at home, and some of her friends from Converse College. I liked them all. They were wonderful to me. The biggest drawback to all of this was that on rainy days they liked to play bridge. Nine times out of ten, the group there was three, and they dragged little 'ole Charlie boy up from his nap in his little bed to be "the fourth" at bridge. I couldn't stand it. But "set back," that was different. "Set back" was a game for boys.
Our Daddy had a nice man that worked on the Spartanburg paper. He was a good reporter, and his name was A.G. Kenney. He had a wife and two sons -- one my age, and one a little younger. He was a World War I veteran, and his boys called him "Sarge." Our Daddy let them use the shack on Huckleberry Ridge for their vacation sometimes, and I went along with them. Sarge played catch with us at any time. He took us fishing, but after dark when supper was done, he was a "set back" man - Hi-low, Jack, and the game. Four, five, or six of us would play "set back" on the shack porch 'till moth wings covered the table, and we played on 'till bedtime.
When the Keeney's were all safe in bed at the shack, in the black of the night and the stillness was settled into the house, the Keeney's raised their chant, "Goodnight Sarge, Goodnight Rob, Goodnight Mamma, 'night Ross, 'night Rob - the good night cries cruised the old house with love, and then came three or four good nights Charlie, and I felt loved and wonderful, and wondered why I didn't do better at "set back."
One night when the weather got bad and we played "set back" on the big front porch at the shack, the lamp almost blew over. We all were shaken and asked Sarge what to do if the house caught fire. He told us all, "If this house catches fire, you just get your hat and call the dog."
