November 2017

All Saints Sunday
But lo! there breaks a yet more glorious day;
The saints triumphant rise in bright array;
The King of glory passes on His way.
Alleluia, Alleluia!

William W. How, 1864
from the hymn, For All the Saints

All Saints Sunday, November 5th
is a special time in the church year to remember those we have loved who have become a part of the church triumphant.  It is an occasion to reflect on the shining promise of Christ's everlasting life against the background of nearing winter darkness. During our All Saints worship service the names of those who have died in the past year will be read as candles are lit and the bell is rung.

As a part of this annual celebration, the Endowment Fund is inviting the friends and members of Lake of the Isles Lutheran Church to honor and memorialize the living saints and the saints in light  with a gift to the Endowment Fund.  This year, those whose names are memorialized with a financial gift will be included on the Sunday morning worship bulletin for All Saints, and with a flower in a special floral arrangement.

Consider the places that have been dear to you, and the people who have made a special mark on you, and honor their memory with your gift.

Peace, Pastor Arden Haug

Music conducted by Mischa Santora

God the Lord is Sun and Shield
By Johann Sebastian Bach, BWV 79

According to music historian Alfred Dürr, cantata BWV 79 was written by Bach for the Reformation Day worship service in Leipzig in 1725. Conductor John Eliot Gardiner likened the opening chorus and the sound of the timpani to "the hammering of Luther's theses to the oak door at the back of the church."

Anthem
God the Lord is sun and shield.
The Lord gives mercy and glory.
No good thing he withholds from those walking upright.
Psalm 84:12

Recitative
Praise God!
 We know where to find the way to blessedness, for Jesus, You show the way through your word and gospel;
your name we will be therefore ever praising.
But since so many here on earth dismiss your word and walk in blindness, with the worldly, have, mercy Lord; your grace may lead them all to faith, to walk with the righteous way

Duet
God, O God, forsake your children nevermore.
Let your word shine for your pilgrim,
All the more enemies are fiercely raging:
You alone our lips are praising.

Chorus
Let truth be our endeavor,
 grant freedom now and ever
To praise your name with fervor
 through Christ our Savior.
 Amen

Chorus
Now thank we all our God with hearts and hands and voices Who wondrous things has done in who his world rejoices. Who, from our mother's arms has blest u s on our way
With countless gifts of love, and still is ours today.

Thanks to Mike Huttner for video

Worker Speaker Series
"Working is the theme of an ongoing speaker series inspired by the Studs Terkel book of that name in which "people talk about what they do all day and how they feel about what they do." Many people within our congregation are engaged in fascinating work and this series gives us an opportunity to learn more about what they do.
The next segment of the series will be Sunday, November 19th featuring Jennifer Cook. Jennifer currently works in Strategic Operations in Innovation, Research & Development for United Health Group where she consults on organizational effectiveness and creates and facilitates learning and development experiences focused on business optimization, innovation and change management. Her past experiences include working as a 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade teacher in the Minnetonka Public Schools, being a startup co-founder of Taylor & Fran (a clothing design company), and working as an organizational effectiveness leader at Target Corporation.
Her talk will take place after a brief coffee break following the Sunday morning service. Those who are interested will be invited to take their coffee/tea into the Christy Room for about 45 minutes. The first 15-20 minutes will be an informal talk by Jennifer about her work...leaving the remaining time for questions from those in attendance.

Volunteer Weekend at
Camp Amnicon
November 17-19
Camp Amnicon is a high adventure camp affiliated with the ELCA and located on the south shore of Lake Superior. It has three major work weekends each year to get the camp ready for the different seasons. The summer camping season is over and the winter retreat season has started.  Among other jobs, we will decorate for Christmas and prepare firewood. There will also be a delicious Thanksgiving dinner.  In exchange for your volunteer labor, you have a bed to sleep in (bunk rooms) and delicious meals. No special talents are necessary and all ages are welcome. There is also time to explore the 700 acres of wilderness. Camp Amnicon depends on volunteer labor to make it possible to serve the many at-risk youth in addition to church youth groups who use the camp. If you are interested or want to learn more, talk to or call Cheri Moe at 952-431-5226.
