Kentucky Artisan Center Exhibits and Demonstrations

9am-6pm Daily
200 Artisan Way

Get Ready, Get Set: Multiples in Clay
(Through February 24th, 2018)

The Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea has a new exhibit featuring 29 Kentucky ceramic artists. The exhibit, "Get Ready, Get Set: Multiples in Clay" showcases the creativity expressed when creating in a series. Both functional and sculptural works are included and the exhibit introduces 10 new ceramic artists to the Center.

Clay has no form of its own, but it can be shaped in minimalist, whimsical, representational or abstract ways. The idea of multiple works in clay is a natural one, whether using the potter's wheel, hand building, or using sculptural techniques. This progressive process fuels new ideas.

The exhibit features matching sets, as well as works that relate to each other based on form, construction and detail. Functional works include dinnerware sets in a variety of designs by Amelia Stamps, Amy Elswick, Jonathan Dazo, Suzy Hatcher and Paul Muth. Many styles and ideas can be seen in the colorful cups, jugs, vases, human and animal forms and realistic replicas that are central to this exhibit.

Numerous works have colorful surfaces, some with intricate designs such as the slip cast "High Heel Shoes" by David Bogus and Melisa Zimmerman's "Sunflower Bottles." More subtle surfaces can be found on Bill Whitt's wood-fired jugs, and on Wayne Ferguson's "Frog Ocarina Quartet."

The versatility of clay is most obvious in the show's sculptural works, such as Page Candler's abstract "Birds," Wyman Rice's organic sculptural forms, Bob Brigl's whimsical face jugs, Lynn Duke's "Pretty Women" sculptures, and the minimalist sculptures by Amy Chase.

"Agates: Kentucky's Jewels"

(Through November 18th)
This exhibit tells about the history, formation and location of these fascinating and rare works of nature.

The exhibit explains how these unusual agates, found primarily in five central Kentucky counties are formed. Numerous lapidary and jewelry techniques for turning this rare stone into elegant jewelry are also shown via photos and text.

Displays of original Agate specimens as well as finished jewelry by numerous Kentucky artists, round out this exciting exhibit.

Saturday Tours and Demonstrations

November 4th - Marlene Dennis, of Louisville, will demonstrate her 'Bourbon Glass' ornaments created from stained glass from 10:30am-3:30pm at the Kentucky Artisan Center in Berea.

Once Dennis started learning stained glass, she says she was hooked. Having always loved glass, crystals and natural stones, she found that with stained glass the possibilities were endless.

November 11th - Sculptor Mike McCarthy will carve stone in a demonstration from 10:30am-3:30pm at the Kentucky Artisan Center in Berea. In 2010, McCarthy turned from carving wood to carving stone, which has become his preferred material.

"I strive for my work to have a feeling of softness even though the materials I use have hard surfaces and qualities," McCarthy said. "Creating art has always been a necessity for me and sculpting allows my ideas to come to life."

November 11th - Free guided gallery tours of the Kentucky Artisan Center's gallery exhibits will be given Saturday, Nov. 11th, at 11am and again at 2pm. These tours will view the lobby exhibit "Agate: Jewel of Kentucky" and the main gallery exhibit, "Get Ready, Get Set: Multiples in Clay" featuring sets of ceramics from 29 Kentucky clay artists.

November 18th -Three members of the Berea Welcome Center Carvers will demonstrate a variety of woodcarving styles and techniques on Saturday from 10:30am-3:30pm at the Kentucky Artisan Center in Berea.

Members of the Berea Welcome Center Carvers live in many communities in central Kentucky, and their activities include carving classes, carving demonstrations at schools, monthly Kentucky Artisan Center demonstrations and special events.

November 25th - Sherrie Cocanougher, of Parksville, will be demonstrating how she creates jewelry using recycled silverware and flatware from 10:30am-3:30pm at the Kentucky Artisan Center in Berea.

Cocanougher's signature design incorporates vintage silverware into bracelets and necklaces. Searching in antique stores and rummage sales, she finds odd silverware pieces, which she tumbles in a rock polisher to clean and polish the surfaces. She then combines the refurbished silverware handles with her handmade glass beads to create unique jewelry.
