Our educator and Provider Support Partnership in Region 2 is here to help you pursue a professional credential or degree!  We are happy to provide you with career advising and information about local colleges and courses.  See individual course information for registration and instructions.  Please note that most of these offerings can be applied to the Dept. of Early Education and Care teacher, lead teacher and director qualifications.  In addition, we offer Leadership courses to obtain a Leadership certificate that will transfer to WSU into a Master's program. Becker College Course
ENGL1006 Children's Literature- 3 credits
Instructor: Shirley Taylor, M.Ed.

This course will provide a general overview of the field of children's literature.  The goals of the course are to share and develop knowledge and enthusiasm for children's literature, to establish guidelines for evaluating children's literature, and to develop an awareness of the various types of children's literature.  Course content includes the history of children's literature, the importance of literature in a child's life, ways to determine a child's literacy preference and ways to foster early literacy in children.

This course can be used toward Lead Teacher Certification through EEC.

EDU 130 Classroom Behavior Management- 3 credits
Instructor: Vera Mykyta
This course is designed to recognize both the teacher's need to maintain basic classroom control and the young child's need for self-expression in a safe, accepting environment.  Students will learn ways to modify behavior that foster self-esteem and self-control in children as well as their caretakers.

This 6-week course is a blended format (1 night/week face-to-face, plus online component each week)

Fitchburg State University Course
EDUC 2006 Theories and Theorists: Comparative Models of Early Childhood Programs- 3 credits 
Instructor: Kristine Reilly

Students will explore early childhood theories and theorists that contributed to the Early Childhood field. Using this framework, students will investigate and explore several major models of early childhood programs from Waldorf and High/Scope, to Creative Curriculum, Bank Street and Head Start. Students will incorporate their own philosophies of education with those in the course to develop and expand their own framework for teaching, using the theories and models that they've explored.

ECE 105 Child Care Administration- 3 credits 
Instructor: Maureen Provost

This course examines the organization, planning, and the administering of various types of early childhood programs. Emphasis will be placed on the responsibility of the director to provide a quality program through thoughtful planning, sound fiscal management skills, and interpersonal relationships, while meeting State standards and guidelines and State licensing regulations. Topics included in the course will be funding, budgeting, evaluating, hiring, collecting fees, writing reports, and communication skills.
Prerequisite: Lead Teacher Certified or permission of division dean.
This course can be used toward Director I Certification through EEC.

ECE 101 Introduction to Early Childhood Education- 3 credits Instructor: TBD

This course is an introduction to early childhood education.  Students study the history and contributing theories of the field and basic aspects important to quality programs for young children, from birth to fourteen years of age.  Course content includes studies of child development, the types of programs available; qualifications for teachers and staff; state regulations monitoring programs, state Guidance Policy, the Massachusetts Early Childhood Standards; career opportunities; special education considerations, and current issues in early childhood education.  During a ten-hour field experience students make observations in the Quinsigamond Children's School and focus on guidance practices; children's play; integrated curriculum practices; transitions and routines; and appropriate methods for addressing special needs of young children.

This course focuses on the family life cycle, economics, family interactions and patterns, and family diversity; and, the course examines the effect these variables have on children's growth and development.  Students relate these variables to their own personal family history and then examine this information in order to support children and families in school settings.
 
Pre-requisite: Minimum of ENG 100 or appropriate placement score on the Accuplacer Placement Test.
This course can be used as one of the three courses needed to become Lead Teacher EEC certified.

ECE 244 Communication for Collaboration- 3 credits 
Instructor: Kim Davenport, M. Ed 

This course emphasizes leadership skills needed for communication and collaboration within Early Childhood Education settings. Students examine adult development and individual style in relationship to leadership skills in early education settings. The role emotional intelligence plays in interpersonal dynamics and communication when working with staff and families is addressed.

Offered for graduate credit by Worcester State University for students with a Bachelor's Degree.

ECE 243- Administration in Early Childhood Education 
Instructor: Greg Mullaney, Ed D 

This 3 credit course covers the administration routines and activities in a variety of early care and education settings.  Content includes program and staff management, community relationship skills, budgeting, staffing, and program development. Students review meeting standards and license requirements, encouraging parent participation, and fundraising.  Students explore elements of supervision and policy formation.
 
Pre-requisites:  ECE102 Growth & Development of the Young Child or PSY 123 Child Psychology.
 
This is the first course in a five course series toward a Leadership Certificate offered through QCC.  It is expected that you will matriculate into the Leadership Certificate program to complete all five.

HUS114A- Curriculum for School Age Educators ONLINE- (1 credit)

Participation in workshops, classroom discussions, self-reflections, fieldwork and other projects should enable students to:  apply principles of curriculum development to planning for children ages 6-12 (i.e., goal setting, design developmentally appropriate experiences and the teaching/learning contexts in which they occur, scheduling); select, plan, and carry out activities in all curricular areas in school-age child care; develop activities and environments based on knowledge of primary-age children's needs and interests and of diverse populations, including children with special needs; and discuss the role of the staff person in designing and implementing curriculum.
