November 2016 in Pune, India

We, Phofi McCullough, Terry Tustain and Laurie Longden, attended classes one more time at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute. This time we were accompanied by Laurie's husband, George Longden, a first time student at the Institute. During our travel we were anticipating the changes we would have to face at the Institute after the passing of Guruji, BKS. Iyengar.

The big change was the absence of Guruji, practising backbends at the far side of the hall swarmed by students. The noble white-haired head with the eagle eyes observing, noticing, correcting our practice while continuing teaching, was not there. Instead his portrait on the wall was urging us to continue practicing. Another big change was Geetaji's (Geeta Iyengar) appearance in the hall leading us with the 'OM' and Patanjali's invocation the first day of classes. Geetaji with soft voice and humor taught the asanas from beginner to advanced level explaining that we do the asanas in order to prepare the body and mind for Prana, the force of life. This was actually the Yemeni of the month: all asanas lead to Pranayama.

Geetaji was intent on teaching us how to be good teachers. We all felt that she wanted to pass on her knowledge, not just teach us as students. As you may know, Geetaji is not in good health, but she continues to work hard on behalf of all of us, and in the tradition and memory of her father. It was a great honor to attend her classes. We were also delighted to attend classes taught by other Indian teachers at the Institute. Each teacher has his or her own style and personality. All these teachers excel at what they do, and follow in the footsteps of Guruji.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
  • Photographer/Videographer:  We are in need of updated photos of our new garden, and general class/workshop photos. Also, KYH has a Youtube Channel which would love some new content added.
  • Work Exchange:
We are in need of other yogis who would like to help out KYH and benefit from an arrangement of work exchange (Cleaning) for yoga classes.
We will consider students who have an established relationship (for example, three months with KYH), rather than newcomers to the studio.
If you are interested, p lease talk to any teacher or Co-ordinator Dianne Kapty or email:  [email protected]
If you are interested in any of these volunteer opportunities to enrich The Kelowna Yoga House Society, please speak to any Teacher.  Thank You!
