NEW EQUIPMENT PROVIDES ADVANCED CARE FOR HORSES, DOGS
Dec. 13 is National Day of the Horse, a day to be mindful of the contributions horses have made to the economy, history, and character of the United States. It's a day that reminds us why we love our equine companions and why we try to give them the best care possible. And now, thanks to two new advanced pieces of equipment -- a flexible needle arthroscope unit and a portable electrocardiogram machine -- UW Veterinary Care can offer even more for equine patients (and dogs too).

Pet Tips and Clinical Studies
TOXIC SUGAR-FREE SWEETENER
With the holidays upon us, many of us will have more sweets around the house. You likely already know that chocolate can be toxic to your dog, but did you know that xylitol, a commonly used sweetener found in products such as nut butters, chewing gum, and candy can be poisonous to your canine companion? The U.S. Food & Drug Administration has more information about xylitol, how to avoid it, and the signs affected dogs may display.

LARGE ANIMALS NEEDED
UW Veterinary Care is seeking large animals to participate in clinical and farm studies. Some trials recruit healthy animals as controls and many of the trials provide a reduction in the cost of treatment. The Internal Medicine Service is seeking healthy and septic crias (baby alpacas and llamas) and the Orthopedics Service is looking for horses with superficial digital flexor tendon or suspensory ligament problems.  Learn more.

Three New Faculty Join Large Animal Hospital
Clients of UW Veterinary Care's Morrie Waud Large Animal Hospital might notice some new faces during their next visit. Three new faculty -- Diego DeGasperi (surgery), Fernando Marqués (internal medicine), and Amelia Munsterman (surgery, acupuncture) -- have recently joined our team. Learn more about them and other new staff and faculty at the hospital and school.

A HOLIDAY CARD THAT HELPS ADVANCE ANIMAL HEALTH
For a suggested $10 donation per card, we will send a holiday card to the recipient of your choice. The beautiful, full-color card will include a greeting stating that a donation was made to the UW School of Veterinary Medicine in the recipient's name and that proceeds will support projects that advance animal health and well-being. This year, we are offering two selections, "Holiday Dreams" and "My Ribbon," featuring the work of Wisconsin artist Robin Raab. Alternative cards featuring horse, dog, cat, and cat/dog options are also available.
