Putting the craft back in craftsmanship?

At the top we show a table from 2006 and then below are two tables we're building today. Look at that great veneer. We can't wait to show you finished photos because what the raw veneer on the bottom table doesn't show is the various tones in which the table will be finished. The small finish sample in the middle of the bottom row of images gives you an idea of what the table will look like when complete.

Currently in the factory are several different table projects taking advantage of the beauty of natural wood by utilizing veneers to create stunning sunburst, various in-lay and radial patterns. In a world of glass, stone, metal and a general overall gray look, we can't help but get excited about these odes to our craftsmanship of old.

It may be more coincidence than trend (we're hoping for the latter), but two tables for different clients that we're building now were inspired by an all veneer table we built a decade ago for a major financial institution. Our new clients saw the table on our website and loved it.

We're showing it here. It featured stunning crotch mahogany in book- and butt-matched and sunburst patterns in the large centerfield and then a band of ropey cherry and finally quartered cherry, with a plain sliced cherry base and solid cherry edge.

Without a doubt, it is a work of art.

Jump to today and right now, as you read this, we're creating those two tables that channel this beauty of old. One is a round table for a client in Japan that features a quartered cherry radial sunburst pattern in the center, crotch mahogany in a radial pattern, a band of ropey cherry and an outer field of quartered cherry in a radial sunburst pattern with a solid cherry edge. Like its predecessor, it's being finished with polyester.

The second table varies further from that 10-year-old work of art that inspired it. It features quartered figured walnut in a book and butt match pattern, narrow strips of fumed lacrch inlay framing a band of quartered walnut in a radial pattern, non-figured plain sliced walnut in a radial pattern and a solid walnut edge.

Both have our shop abuzz with excitement from veneer to woodworking to finish departments.

We hope the clients love them as much as we do, and we hope others will find these custom works of art as inspiring as we did. We'll be sure to share finished photos in future newsletters to help further inspire you to allow us to put the craft back in craftsmanship.
