He, She or They?
"Everyone wants their cat to succeed." That's one example of the way "they" has become commonly used in place of the more grammatically correct, "his or her."
If you thought that cat sentence sounded just fine, you'll be relieved to know that 200 linguists from the American Dialect Society named "they," as their
2016 Word of the Year. The Society makes the case that this gender-neutral pronoun is more inclusive. Turns out this usage was common in the 16th century and, according to the Oxford Dictionary, is now widely accepted both in speech and in writing.
