Volunteer to Support Veterans at A-B Tech Community College
Veterans
A-B Tech Community College Veterans' Cafe provides a supportive and comfortable environment for our students who are military service veterans to relax, network and connect with resources. It provides veterans with the opportunity to use a computer lab, engage in study groups and network with other student veterans.
Volunteers support the Cafe as hosts, ensuring a welcoming and supportive environment. This includes setting out snacks and coffee and also interacting with veterans to help support them as they pursue their academic goals. Volunteer shifts are typically three hours one day a week, with our greatest needs on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Typical shifts are 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and 1-4 p.m. Military experience is preferred but not required.
Student veterans face numerous barriers and as such, the Veterans' Café is recognized as a vital part of their academic and personal success. We hope that you will consider volunteering with the Veterans' Café.

Dear OLLI Members,
We had a very successful registration for Winter 2017, with over 950 people entering the registration allocation process. Remember that we will send schedules late in the afternoon on Tuesday, December 6, and Add/Drop will begin (online) at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, December 7.  We will have helpers at the Reuter Center for anyone who needs assistance navigating the online system.

We are entering the season of giving thanks, and we want to thank all of our members who serve as Class Reps and also to thank Martha Marshall and Susan Poole for their work organizing this effort.  If you are scheduled to teach a course or considering teaching one, you should sign up for Tech Talks to be held on Tuesday, December 6, another form of support and encouragement for the instructors who give their time and talent to challenge us intellectually and create our community of teachers and learners.

We hope that all of you received our first mailing for our end-of-year appeal for OLLI's Annual Fund.  We use Annual Fund donations for improvements to the Reuter Center like upgrades to our sound system. We help to fund special lectures or to provide scholarships to attend College for Seniors courses.  We urge you to make a gift in honor of the people who make OLLI such a unique and engaging community of teachers and learners.   Click here to learn more about making a donation to OLLI.

If you want to celebrate the talents of our membership, make plans to attend the Reuter Center Singers concert here at the Reuter Center on Monday, December 5.  If you want to learn more about universal design, livable houses and livable communities, plan to attend the forum on Wednesday, December 7 sponsored by AARP and the R.L. Mace Institute for Universal Design and featuring a lecture by Richard Duncan.

Remember that there is still time to sign up to purchase poinsettias from the Asheville Breakfast Rotary Club to support scholarships for UNC Asheville students.  You will be able to pick up the plants right here at the Reuter Center.  And the UNC Asheville men's and women's basketball teams would like to invite you to attend their games this afternoon and again on Friday, November 25. The women's game on the day after Thanksgiving is being televised, and they would like to fill the stands. Tickets are inexpensive, parking is a breeze and there is no better way to get out of the house after your Thanksgiving feast. Bring along your family, avoid the first rush of holiday shopping and celebrate our university's talented athletes.

With thanks for the ways in which we all make OLLI a place to learn in community, discuss important issues, and have fun,
Catherine Frank
Executive Director
