An illustrious College Football Hall of Fame class took center stage at the 59th NFF Annual Awards Dinner Dec. 6 during its formal induction at the Waldorf Astoria in New York, and 12 of the game's current-leading student-athletes earned postgraduate scholarships as NFF National Scholar-Athletes. The festivities culminated with the announcement of Western Michigan's Zach Terrell as the recipient of the 27th William V. Campbell Trophy, presented by Fidelity Investments, as the top football scholar-athlete in the nation.

NBC's Mike Tirico entertained the crowd as the evening's emcee, and NFF Board Member and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones had the honor of introducing all of the universities in attendance. Daniel Rodriguez returned to sing the National Anthem and God Bless America, while His Eminence, Timothy Cardinal Dolan, the Archbishop of New York, gave the invocation.

NFF Board Member and TV personality Jack Ford presented the Gold Medal, the organization's highest and most prestigious award, to NFF Chairman and College Football Hall of Fame inductee Archie Manning. NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell presented the 2016 Distinguished American Award to William H. McRaven, the chancellor of the University of Texas System and a retired U.S. Navy four-star admiral. The son of a football player, McRaven touched on the lessons he learned from his father and the importance of the game to our country in an inspirational speech that can be seen by clicking here.

The 2016 College Football Hall of Fame Class was introduced by NFF Board Members Archie Griffin, a Hall of Fame running back from Ohio State, and Grant Teaff, AFCA Executive Director Emeritus and Hall of Fame Coach. Members of the class included Marlin Briscoe (Nebraska Omaha), Derrick Brooks (Florida State), Tom Cousineau (Ohio State), Randall Cunningham (UNLV), Troy Davis (Iowa State), William Fuller (North Carolina), Bert Jones (LSU), Tim Krumrie (Wisconsin), Pat McInally (Harvard), Herb Orvis (Colorado), Bill Royce (Ashland [Ohio]), Mike Utley (Washington State), Scott Woerner (Georgia), Rod Woodson (Purdue) and coaches Bill Bowes (New Hampshire) and Frank Girardi (Lycoming [Pa.]).

NFF Chairman and Hall of Fame inductee 
Archie Manning (Mississippi) conducted the Official Hall of Fame Ring Ceremony. Cunningham, who finished his career as UNLV's leader in both career passing and punting, delivered the response on behalf of the class and touched on the journey of the inductees.

The 2016 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class, presented by Fidelity Investments, joined the Hall of Famers on stage. Comprised of 12 of the most talented and brightest football players in the nation, each member of the class received an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship and was a finalist for The William V. Campbell TrophyKathleen MurphyNFF Vice Chairwoman and president of Personal Investing at Fidelity Investments, led the presentation of the awards, while NFF Chairman Emeritus Jon F. Hanson had the honor of presenting the Campbell Trophy to Western Michigan quarterback Zach Terrell.

A First-Team Academic All-American and three-time All-MAC selection, Terrell is Western Michigan's career leader in passing yards. The Broncos will play in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic this season after he guided them to an undefeated regular season, the 2016 MAC title and its first-ever ranking in the AP Poll. Terrell graduated cum laude in 3.5 years with a 3.66 GPA in finance, and he is currently working toward an MBA. The rest of the 2016 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class included Chris Beaschler (Dayton), Tim Crawley (San Jose State), DeVon Edwards (Duke), Brooks Ellis (Arkansas), Carter Hanson (Saint John's [Minn.]), Taysom Hill (BYU), Ryan Janvion (Wake Forest), Zay Jones (East Carolina), Cooper Rush (Central Michigan), Karter Schult (Northern Iowa) and Tyler Sullivan (Delta State [Miss.]).

Tirico introduced the other major award winners. College Football Hall of Fame coach and AFCA Executive Director Emeritus Grant Teaff accepted the NFF Outstanding Contribution to Amateur Football Award for his enormous impact on the game. U.S. Naval Academy Athletics Director Chet Gladchuk received the NFF John L. Toner Award, presented by Hofmann Brands, for excellence in athletics administration while the Voice of the Washington Huskies Bob Rondeau was presented with the NFF Chris Schenkel Award for excellence in broadcasting. NFF Board Member and GE Chairman & CEO Jeff Immelt received the NFF Legacy Award for his dedication and impact on the NFF and football.

College Football Hall of Famer Don McPherson (Syracuse) emceed the NFF Chapter Awards Luncheon, presented by Under Armour, on Dec. 6. At the event, ACC Senior Associate Commissioner Amy Yakola presented the NFF National High School Scholar-Athlete Awards and Under Armour Senior Director of College Sports Nick Carparelli presented the 2016 Chapter Leadership Awards.

The chapter award leaders included Jack Dawson (State of Maine Chapter), Bill Farkas (Passaic County [N.J.] Chapter), Priscilla Kistler (NFFCHOF Bill Dooley [N.C.] Chapter), Jeff Logan (Columbus [Ohio] Chapter) and Tony Ortega (Pasadena/San Gabriel [Calif.] Chapter).

The high school scholar-athletes boasted an impressive list of recipients, including Andrew Griffin (NFF Central Indiana Chapter - currently attending Princeton), Scooter Harrington (NFF DeSantis-McDougall [Conn.] Chapter - currently attending Stanford), Matthew Mitchell (NFF Valley of the Sun [Ariz.] Chapter - currently attending Phoenix College [Ariz.]), John Orr (NFF Middle Tennessee Chapter - currently attending Princeton) and Stephen Spanellis (NFF Greater Baltimore Chapter - currently attending Michigan).

On the day before the event, the NFF partnered with the Ivy League to co-host the announcement of the Asa S. Bushnell Cup, presented by the Pasadena Tournament of Roses. NFF Board Member and former Brown offensive tackle George Pyne emceed the event which featured comments from Pasadena Tournament of Roses president Brad Ratliff. Ivy League Executive Director Robin Harris announced Dartmouth linebacker Folarin Orimolade and Princeton running back John Lovett as the conference's players of the year.

On Dec. 7, 2016 NFF National Scholar-Athletes DeVon Edwards (Duke) and Brooks Ellis (Arkansas) took part in a panel about the student-athlete perspective at the Learfield Intercollegiate Athletics Forum in New York. The panel was moderated by NFF Board Member, TV personality and former Yale football player, Jack Ford.

George Sechrist, of the Business Media Group (BMG) based in Indianapolis, produced the event for the fourth time. Serving as hallowed ground for college football's royalty for nearly six decades, the iconic Waldorf Astoria Grand Ballroom in New York City ended a historic 58-year run with the celebration of the 59th NFF Annual Awards Dinner. Next year, the fabled event will move to the New York Hilton Midtown as the Waldorf begins a three-year renovation project.

The Campbell Trophy is one of college football's most sought after and competitive awards, recognizing an individual as the absolute best in the country for his combined academic success, football performance and exemplary community leadership. The award comes with a 24-inch, 25-pound bronze trophy and a $25,000 postgraduate scholarship. A total of $223,000 was awarded Dec. 6 to Terrell and the 11 other members of the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class, presented by Fidelity Investments, who comprised the list of Campbell Trophy finalists. Each member of the class claimed an $18,000 scholarship for their postgraduate educations.

Following the Annual Awards Dinner, Terrell received several additional honors. On Dec. 7, the New York Athletic Club (NYAC) hosted a luncheon in his honor at the organization's Hall of Fame Room. From there, headed directly to Atlanta for ESPN's The Home Depot College Football Awards at the College Football Hall of Fame on Dec. 8, where he was interviewed live by Tom Rinaldi during the show. Finally, he will be honored on the field during the College Football Playoff National Championship in Tampa, Fla., on Jan. 9.
A true American icon, John H. Glenn Jr., defined himself as a leader in every step of his life. The holder of countless titles, including soldier, pilot, pioneering NASA astronaut, corporate executive, and U.S. Senator, his accomplishments placed him in rarefied company. The first American to orbit Earth, Glenn passed away Dec. 8 in Columbus, Ohio. He was 95. In 2008, he became the 53rd recipient of the National Football Foundation's Gold Medal, the organization's highest honor. The Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN to Remain at the College Football Hall of Fame: ESPN and the College Football Hall of Fame and Chick-fil-A Fan Experience have reached a new multiyear agreement to keep the live telecast honoring the nation's best position players and coaches at the popular downtown Atlanta attraction through 2020.

NFF Board Member and  Apple CEO Tim Cook will deliver the commencement speech for the graduating class of 2017 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

College Football Hall of Famer Ty Detmer (BYU) and former football players Tommy Vardell (Stanford) and Troy Vincent (Wisconsin) are among the six former student-athletes who will be recognized with the NCAA Silver Anniversary Award for their collegiate and professional achievements. They will be honored during the 2017 NCAA Convention on Jan. 18 in Nashville, Tenn.

College Football Hall of Fame player and 2017 Hall of Fame coach candidate Steve Spurrier received the Contributions to College Football Award during The Home Depot College Football Awards at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta last week.

College Football Hall of Famer Jim Brown (Syracuse) received the Sports Illustrated Muhammad Ali Legacy Award on Dec. 12.

The latest in ESPN's 30 for 30 Shorts series launched last week with "The Throwback," which tells the story of College Football Hall of Famer and 1987 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Gordie Lockbaum (Holy Cross).

2010 Campbell Trophy winner  Sam Acho (Texas) and former NFF National Scholar-Athletes Eli Manning (Mississippi) and Joe Thomas (Wisconsin) are among this year's nominees for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award.

1990 Campbell Trophy winner Chris Howard (Air Force), now the president at Robert Morris University, recently joined the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics and, as of January 2017, the NCAA Honors Committee.

2015 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Jason Vander Laan (Ferris State [Mich.]) is among 10 exceptional former student-athletes who will be honored as the 2017 Today's Top 10 Award winners at the 2017 NCAA Convention. Former Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott will also be honored.


2016 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Updates

Five members of the 2016 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class received First Team Academic All-America honors, including 2016 Campbell Trophy winner Zach Terrell (Western Michigan),  Chris Beaschler (Dayton), Brooks Ellis (Arkansas), Carter Hanson (Saint John's [Minn.]) and Karter Schult (Northern Iowa). Zay Jones (East Carolina) received Second Team Academic All-America recognition.  

2016 Campbell Trophy winner  Zach Terrell  from Western Michigan quarterbacked the Broncos to an undefeated regular season and a MAC title after defeating Ohio in the championship game. The recipient of the MAC's 2016 Vern Smith Leadership Award, he was named Academic All-MAC, Second Team All-MAC and a finalist for the 2016 Manning Award. Terrell and the Broncos will take on Wisconsin in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic on Jan. 2. The game will kick off at 1 p.m. ET on ESPN. 

Dayton linebacker Chris Beaschler became the first two-time winner of the Pioneer Football League Scholar-Athlete of the Year. For the third consecutive year, he was named both First Team All-PFL and First Team Academic All-PFL. Beaschler also became the first three-time recipient of Dayton's Chief Toscani Hitter Award.

Arkansas linebacker Brooks Ellis was named the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was selected to the SEC Football Community Service Team. Ellis and the Razorbacks will take on Virginia Tech in the Belk Bowl on Dec. 29. The game will kick off at 5:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Saint John's (Minn.) linebacker Carter Hanson  was named one of the four finalists for the 2016 Gagliardi Trophy, which is awarded to the most outstanding football player in NCAA Division III. The award will be presented on Dec. 14.

After suffering an injury, BYU quarterback Taysom Hill will miss the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl on Dec. 21 against Wyoming. The game will kick off at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Wake Forest safety Ryan Janvion was named the recipient of the 2016 Jim Tatum Award, which is given to the top senior student-athlete among the ACC's football players. Janvion and the Demon Deacons will face Temple in the Military Bowl presented by Northrop Grumman on Dec. 27. The game will kick off at 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.

East Carolina wide receiver Zay Jones was named a First Team All-American by  Sporting News and  Walter Camp and a Second Team All-American by AP and the FWAA. He also received First Team All-American Athletic Conference honors. Jones  has accepted an invitation to play in the  2017 Reese's Senior Bowl, which will kick off Jan. 28 at 2:30 p.m. ET in Mobile, Ala., and air on the NFL Network.

Central Michigan quarterback Cooper Rush received Academic All-MAC recognition, Third Team All-MAC honors and his second-consecutive CMU Herb Deromedi Most Valuable Player Award. The Chippewas will face Tulsa in the Miami Beach Bowl Dec. 19 at 2:30 p.m. ET on ESPN. Rush also accepted an invitation to the East-West Shrine Game, which is scheduled for Jan. 21 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla., with a 3 p.m. ET kickoff on the NFL Network.

Northern Iowa defensive lineman Karter Schult was named the Madness FCS Defensive Player of the Year and was selected to the 2016 Missouri Valley Football Conference Scholar-Athlete first-team. Schult is also a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award, given to the best defensive player in the FCS, which will be announced during the 2016 STATS FCS Awards Banquet and Presentation on Jan. 6 in Frisco, Texas.

Delta State (Miss.) quarterback Tyler Sullivan was selected as a 2017 Congressional Fellow for U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran of Mississippi.

The NFF Scholar-Athlete of the Day, presented by Fidelity Investments, is a daily segment honoring the semifinalists for the 2016 William V. Campbell Trophy, presented by Fidelity Investments. Today's honoree is North Carolina State cornerback Jack Tocho, who graduated in May with a 3.24 GPA in business finance.

North Carolina at Pembroke senior place-kicker Matt Davis was selected as the recipient of the 2016 Fred Mitchell Award, which is presented to the nation's top place-kicker in FCS, Division II, Division III, NAIA or NJCAA for excellence on the football field and in the community. He will be honored at Halas Hall on Feb. 20 at the NFF Chicago Metro Chapter's annual Awards Ceremony.

2016 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Alumni Association 

Since 1959, the National Football Foundation has annually recognized the best and brightest college players, presenting them with prestigious NFF National Scholar-Athlete Awards, presented by Fidelity Investments. The $18,000 postgraduate scholarships are presented at the NFF Annual Awards Dinner in New York City. 

Launched in 2008, the NFF Scholar-Athlete Alumni Association provides a powerful vehicle for past honorees to remain in the vanguard of the NFF's present efforts.
