Shalom!

At Chanukah, we remember and retell the story of the rededication of the Temple by the Maccabees after its desecration at the hands of our enemies. The theme of rededication is timely from a Hadassah standpoint, as well.

My term as your Region President is coming to its end. It has been my pleasure to get to know many of you, to work together, and to enjoy your chapters' events with you. Many thanks to all of you who have made my presidency so enjoyable and fulfilling. I won't be going away; I'll still be serving on the Region Board as a mentor and advisor.

We will gather on January 5 th to install the incoming officers, including our new Region Co-Presidents, Joan Astor and Paula London. These dedicated volunteers have as their goal to serve the mission of Hadassah, and the chapters and members of Hadassah Southern New England. Their installation will bring fresh thinking and new ideas as we enter 2017, and into the future. I invite you to join us as we gather to welcome and celebrate the incoming leadership, and to thank those who have served on the Region Board over the past year. For more information, see the attached flyer.

May we rededicate ourselves to the work of Hadassah: healing, educating, and nurturing. As Henrietta Szold so famously said, "There is no ending that is not a beginning." Here's to new beginnings!

Dr. Hans Fisher, survivor of the St. Louis
ComplicitComplicit
Film Screening and Discussion
On Sunday, December 4, Hadassah Northeast hosted a continental brunch, and screening of the award-winning documentary film Complicit at NewBridge on the Charles in Dedham, Mass . Complicit reveals the untold story of why President Roosevelt and the State Department refused safe haven to Jewish refugees under Nazi tyranny. Following the documentary, there was a discussion with Dr. Hans Fisher, survivor of the St. Louis.

There were 937 passengers on the ship and ultimately 254 of the passengers perished in Auschwitz and other concentration camps after the ship was forced back to Europe. The film showcased interviews by survivors who were small children in 1939. The passengers believed that they were sailing to freedom. "I felt truly liberated when I boarded the St. Louis" said Dr. Fisher, as he recalled the anti-Semitism that he was already experiencing in Germany.

Passengers arrived in Cuba, but were held off for two weeks from embarking and then not allowed to enter the country. "The first word I learned in Spanish was manana (tomorrow), but manana never came," said one of the survivors profiled in the film.

The ship then sailed to Miami, hoping for entry into the United States. Passengers sent telegrams to the State House pleading to be allowed entry. One survivor recalled telling his friend "President Roosevelt will take care of us." It was "nightmarish" when the boat was turned around.  The ship, waiting in the waters near Miami, was forced back to Germany by the coast guard.

This tragedy makes one realize that the current refugee situation is similar. "Today, we need to maintain courage to stand up for humanity," said St. Louis Survivor, Thomas Jacobson. Dr. Fisher ended the presentation by stating, "Our Jewish success in defeating Hitler and the Nazis is that we are here, and our families have and continue to contribute to the welfare of mankind and to the astonishing success that is Israel."
