Shalom,
I hope that you and your families had a wonderful Thanksgiving filled with family, food and joy. As I sat at my Thanksgiving table, surrounded by Hadassah Life Members, Associates and Child Associates (my 2 grandsons!), the life-saving and life-changing work of Hadassah was frequently part of the conversation.
Last week I (and 120 others) had the opportunity to be at an important program sponsored by Hadassah Northeast and held at NewBridge on the Charles. We viewed the film "Complicit" and listened to a talk by Hans Fisher. As an 11 year old child in 1939, Mr. Fisher was one of 937 passengers on the SS St Louis refused entry by Cuba, the United States and Canada. These countries said "NO" to men, women and children trying to escape the Holocaust. The ship was sent back to Europe, where at least one-third of the passengers were murdered by the Nazis. In the film "Complicit" we heard from other survivors as well as historians who have studied the government responses that occurred. It was shameful and heartbreaking, and it reminds us that "Never Again" is not just a saying and must not be forgotten.
As we and our families now look forward to Hanukkah, I ask that you consider Hadassah gifts for those you love. Give the gift of Life/ Child Life Memberships to the women and girls, and make the men and boys Associates/ Child Associates. Do it in December to beat the price increase on January 1st. You'll have some Hanukkah gelt left over to spend on...
...the new "Endless Beginnings" sterling silver necklace! Engraved with the Henrietta Szold quote, "There is no ending that is not a beginning," your donation supports Hadassah Medical Organization research. Order one for yourself as well as one to give. Look for information in this newsletter about membership and the beautiful necklace.
I ask you again to let me know how YOU would like to get involved in Hadassah in this upcoming year. Whether it is something big or small, I'd love to hear about it and have you share your thoughts, ideas and passion. We are the Women Who DO, and we can DO so much more together!
May the brightness and joy of the candles in the menorah bring warmth and happiness into each of your homes.

Dr. Hans Fisher, survivor of the St. Louis |
Complicit Film Screening and Discussion
On Sunday, December 4, Hadassah Northeast hosted a continental brunch, and screening of the award-winning documentary film
Complicit at NewBridge on the Charles in Dedham, Mass
. Complicit reveals the untold story of why President Roosevelt and the State Department refused safe haven to Jewish refugees under Nazi tyranny. Following the documentary, there was a discussion with Dr. Hans Fisher, survivor of the St. Louis.
There were 937 passengers on the ship and ultimately 254 of the passengers perished in Auschwitz and other concentration camps after the ship was forced back to Europe. The film showcased interviews by survivors who were small children in 1939. The passengers believed that they were sailing to freedom. "I felt truly liberated when I boarded the St. Louis" said Dr. Fisher, as he recalled the anti-Semitism that he was already experiencing in Germany.
Passengers arrived in Cuba, but were held off for two weeks from embarking and then not allowed to enter the country. "The first word I learned in Spanish was
manana (tomorrow), but
manana never came," said one of the survivors profiled in the film.
The ship then sailed to Miami, hoping for entry into the United States. Passengers sent telegrams to the State House pleading to be allowed entry. One survivor recalled telling his friend "President Roosevelt will take care of us." It was "nightmarish" when the boat was turned around. The ship, waiting in the waters near Miami, was forced back to Germany by the coast guard.
This tragedy makes one realize that the current refugee situation is similar. "Today, we need to maintain courage to stand up for humanity," said St. Louis Survivor, Thomas Jacobson. Dr. Fisher ended the presentation by stating, "Our Jewish success in defeating Hitler and the Nazis is that we are here, and our families have and continue to contribute to the welfare of mankind and to the astonishing success that is Israel."
