Home Take Shape as Build Cam Goes Live in Breezy Point
With the foundation walls now poured, Diane Hellriegel is one step closer to her new
#HurricaneStrong home. The residence will not only replace her original 1955 structure damaged in Hurricane Sandy, but it is serving as an education project to promote disaster-resilient construction. Supporters can now watch the build progress by viewing the time-lapse "build cam" online at
hurricanestrong.org.
The project is moving briskly, and the FLASH video team will be in Breezy Point this month to capture the next build milestone -- installation of the
QuadLock flooring system and Insulated Concrete Form (ICF) walls from
Logix. The video footage and interviews will become part of a project documentary that will help spread the story of strong, durable, energy efficient building.

New Ready Business Workshop Sheds Light on Power Outage Preparedness
There was no shortage of enlightenment at Indiana's Ready Business Power Outage Workshop in November for corporations, farmers, and service organizations alike. As one Fair Oaks Farms employee said, it was "very eye-opening and informative."
Representatives from Business Resiliency Alliance of Indiana, ComEd, Fair Oaks Farms, Northwest Indiana County Organizations Active in Disaster (COAD), South Newton School Corporation, Williams Eye Institute, and more attended the workshop to learn more about power outages. The lessons learned were valuable for ranchers with 30,000 cows and electric milking machines as well as optometrists and volunteer coordinators.

QuakeSmart Workshop attendees in Charleston, SC came to startling conclusion: even a moderate earthquake in Charleston could have catastrophic effects.
"The devil is in the geological detail," College of Charleston scientist Dr. Steven Jaume stated, explaining how local geology determines a range of impacts from shake strength to liquefaction potential.

National Storm Shelter Association
raised its voice in the city. As attendees of the 2016 Storm Shelter Conference learned more about storm shelters, they also enjoyed a unique opportunity to contribute to the NSSA Foundation Strategic Plan.

On November 2, the FLASH Board of Directors elected Verisk Insurance Solutions VP Robert Andrews and The Home Depot's National PRO Manager Earl Madison as voting directors by unanimous consent.
Mr. Andrews has nationwide operational oversight of all Verisk commercial property field data collection and has been with Verisk (ISO) since 1995, in which he has served as a regional manager, regional vice president, and vice president of Community Hazard Mitigation.

While most Floridians collectively breathed a sigh of relief when Hurricane Matthew skirted its east coast in October, Rick Knabb,

worried about others in in its path.
Instead of feeding national and local television stations live broadcasts on where the hurricane was headed, Knabb made a plea as hurricane center staff stood behind him with heads slightly bowed. "Please," he said. "If your emergency managers tell you to evacuate, go." Knabb's goal was to use his air time to convey a more personal message.
"We made a decision to break from meteorology," he said. "People were not heeding calls from emergency managers to evacuate."
