November 2016 Newsletter
A Note from the Executive Director
The holidays can be a challenging time for many young people. We often hear from SBHCs that their services are critical to students who find extended school breaks traumatic and the pressure of "happy family" expectations unrealistic. This, along with the uptick in post-election harassment and conflict facing many children, may be presenting stressors for those of you working in SBHCs. I hope you will find the resources herein helpful as you face these challenges, and I hope you will find some of the good news bracing as well. As you wrap up the 2016 school year, we hope you will find peace in the knowledge that your service to children makes you our heroes! And, please consider taking advantage of the opportunities to be recognized as such through our Calendar Photo Contest and Exemplary SBHC Awards; read on for more. And if you only read one thing in this newsletter, go watch the video of Wangari Maathai telling a story (link in final story) - because you are hummingbirds!
With wishes for peace,

Head to Toe: SBHC Pre-Conference Registration Opens December 6th
You may already be planning your SBHC team's 2017 calendar and budget; if so, don't forget to set aside the time and money to participate in the annual Head to Toe SBHC pre-conference. Registration and agenda will be available on December 6th at: http://attendhead2toe.com/.

Invite Your Legislators for a Visit
Did you know that every New Mexico Senator and Representative was either newly elected or newly re-elected in the November election? Use this opportunity to introduce or re-introduce your SBHC to him or her! Congratulate them on their election and offer to host a visit to your SBHC. Consider sharing data with them about your services (if you are DOH-contracted, use data from Command Center's administrator report). This could make all the difference as legislators decide what to fund in the coming legislative session. If you need help, contact NMASBHC for support!

HSD Announces LARC Unbundling
For those working in FQHCs, RHCs or Hospital-Based Rural Health Clinics, there is a new Medical Assistance Program Manual Supplement regarding LARC unbundling that may be of great interest. Effective September 1st, NMHSD has unbundled the cost of the Long-Acting Reversible Contraceptives (LARC) from the encounter rate in order to ensure that women electing these methods have access. Trauma Resources for Post-Election Harassment
According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, K-12 settings and colleges have been the most common venues for hate incidents since the presidential election. We have heard from a number of you about the concerns of students related to post-election conflict and harassment. The following are resources that may be helpful as you support students. If we can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out to NMASBHC.
  • And finally, if you as a caregiver need some inspiration to keep up your good work, check out Nobel Peace Laureate Wangari Maathai sharing the "Hummingbird Story" at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGMW6YWjMxw. Thank you Dr. Lisa Cacari-Stone for sharing this story!
