Winter 2017 Voter deadline - Dec. 10

Articles for the Winter 2017 Voter are due December 10, 2016. Send submissions to Wendy Duering: [email protected]. The printed Winter 2017 Voter will come out early January.

Carrie Chapman Catt needs YOU!

Carrie took it as her mission to secure the vote for women - then to found the LWV so we could use that right well and wisely. She died in 1947. The League was able to "Carrie" on only because new leaders were willing to step into her shoes. This year more than ever we need people who will work on issues that are central to our democracy - redistricting, money in politics, voting rights, and more. Six two-year board positions are up for election, and many additional opportunities are available. Prior experience is not required, just dedication and passion for the League's critical work of Making Democracy Work. Send me your name! Nominate your friend! Now is the time to make a difference.
-Conda Boyd, nominating chair; email: [email protected]; phone: 440-899-2987

VOTER SERVICE 2016 WRAP-UP
VOTE411 was a success

Starting in late summer, well before the November 8 election, we added all local races (U.S. Congressional, Ohio General Assembly, Judicial, State Board of Education, and Cuyahoga County Council) and tax issues to the League's national online voters' guide, VOTE411.org. We do not yet have statistics on usage for Cuyahoga County, but LWV Ohio reports that for the 2016 year (primary and general election), Ohio was third highest (at 6.88 percent of the total usage) in the country in generating traffic on the VOTE411.org website, even surpassing several states with larger populations. Nationally 4.3 million users visited the site; Ohio had 224,301 new users. These numbers comprise both use of the candidate information and other voter information that is available on the site.

Candidate forums

Chapters cooperated on two major candidate forums, one of which was co-sponsored by the National Council of Jewish Women. These forums, which covered several statehouse contests and the race for Ohio State Board of Education District 11, were captured on videos that had hundreds of viewers on the LWVGC YouTube channel. Many viewers were directed to these forum videos from VOTE411.

LWVGC voter hotline

Volunteers with the LWV of Greater Cleveland also   handled about 200 phone calls from voters during the month before the November 8   election. Because we wanted to   answer all calls without having to be in our   Tower City office, we had all calls forwarded to a cell phone passed among the  volunteers. Callers were answered immediately or  they left voice mails and   their calls were returned. Thanks to our volunteers: Joanne Siegla (organizer),   Siobhan Leftwich, Laurel Rowen, Mary   Warren, Lynda Mayer, and Janice Patterson.

Voter registration

There were 70 voter registration events, many in cooperation with Northeast Ohio Voter Advocates (NOVA) and other organizations. We estimate that we registered over 500 voters. There were at least 30 volunteers involved in everything from our booth near the Republican National Convention to days of work at Cleveland State University, the Neighborhood Family Practice, and high schools. Well done, volunteers!
