Scheduled Upcoming Civic Meetings - Residents are invited to attend the upcoming City meetings.  Below is a list of the meetings with their date, time and location.

City Council
  • Meets on Monday, December 5 at 7:00 p.m. at Westland City Hall, located at 36300 Warren Rd. 
Planning Commission
  • Meets on Tuesday, December 6 at 7:30 p.m. at Westland City Hall, located at 36300 Warren Rd.

2016 Holiday TasteFest -  Westland's premier holiday charity event is taking place on Tuesday, December 6. The Westland Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club are teaming up to bring you Tastefest 2016.  Your ticket gets you a wide  variety of delicious food and great live entertainment.  There will also be auctions and raffles all night long.  And if you bring a new kids coat, hat or gloves to donate, you will be entered into a special drawing for a one hundred dollar gift card.  The fun takes place at the Hellenic Cultural Center, located at 36375 Joy Rd. You can get advance tickets by calling the Chamber at 734-326-7222.


Deck the City Hall Holiday Celebration -  We are coming up to one of the most popular annual events in our All American City.  It is time once again to "Deck the City Hall."  This year's celebration will be the perfect way to kick off the holiday season in Westland.  The fun all starts at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 7. Everyone will gather in front of City Hall to sing some Christmas Carols and welcome Santa and Mrs. Claus to Westland.  After they help Mayor Wild light the Official Christmas Tree and City Hall grounds, everyone can come in for cookies and hot cocoa.  There will also be crafts for kids to make and they can write out their lists for Santa.  Little ones will also have a chance to visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus.  Anyone who brings a $5 per kid or $10 per family donation for "Shop with a Hero" or an unwrapped toy will get a Fast Pass to see Santa.


All American Winter Farmers Market -  S top by the All American Winter Market this Thursday, December 8.  Located inside the Farmers and Artisans Marketplace in Central City Park, the Market will be open from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.  The fireplace will be lit so it will be nice and warm inside, and there will be one-of-a-kind items on sale for everyone on your list.  Everything from jewelry and hand-made linens, to sweet treats of all kinds will be available.  


Be Proud! Be Responsible Workshop - On  Saturday, December 10, the Westland Youth Assistance Program will be presenting a "Be Proud, Be Responsible" program for area teens.  This free program gives young people the information they need to make good choices when it comes to their relationships.  The program begins at 10:00 a.m. and students attending get a free lunch, special prize, and all of the required materials.  This event will take place at the Jefferson Barns Community Vitality Center, located at 32150 Dorsey St.  You can register by calling the Youth Assistance Program at 734-467-7904.

Holiday Fest Mill Lighting -  The Friends of Nankin Mills want to invite everyone out for an old fashioned celebration of the Christmas season this weekend.  On Saturday, December 10 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. they will be hosting the 29th Annual Mill Lighting.  There will be arts & crafts opportunities for children, a community sing-a-long, and a special visit from St. Nick.  This is a fun filled event for all ages that is sure to get you into the holiday spirit.  For more information, please call 734-261-1850.


Jefferson Barns has a number of free activities and programming available during the week.  Residents are encouraged to come check out all this community center has to offer.

  • Learning Center Hours -  Monday through Thursday 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
  • Boxing Gym Hours - Monday through Friday 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.; Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
  • Youth Assistance Program Tutoring - Wednesdays 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • LifeCare Pathway to Success/Computer Literacy - Tuesday and Friday 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
  • Beaumont Hospital Diabetes Nutrition - Wednesday 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
  • Pickle Ball - Monday, Wednesday and Friday 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (*What is it?*  Pickle Ball is easy to learn and fun to play for individuals of all ages.  It is traditionally played on a badminton-sized court with special pickle ball paddles, made of wood or high-tech aerospace materials.  The ball is similar to a wiffle ball, but is slightly smaller.  The lower net and wiffle ball allow the game to be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities, while still allowing more competitive players to test their skills.


Mike Modano Ice Arena officially open for the season -  Stop by and check out the new and newly renovated locker rooms and the other significant improvements at the Mike Modano Ice Arena.  Open skates will be every Tuesday and Thursday from 2:30 p.m. to 3:20 p.m.  The ever popular glow skate will be held every Friday from 7:00 p.m. to 9:20 p.m.  Timbits can learn to play hockey every Saturday morning from 11:30 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. and anyone can come get skating lessons Mondays from 5:00 p.m. to 5:50 p.m., Fridays from 6:00 p.m. to 6:50 p.m. and Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 11:20 a.m.  There is adult drop in times every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 1:00 p.m. to 2:50 p.m.  Ice is available to rent after 10:00 p.m. for $150/hour.

The City is served by two public school districts; Wayne-Westland Community Schools serving 12,000 youth was recently named one of the Best School in Michigan by WXYZ-TV and is the proud recipient of 14 Golden Apple and two Michigan Blue Ribbon Exemplary School Awards.  Livonia Public Schools, educating nearly 15,000 students, is proud of their MEAP/MME scores that exceed state averages and the District has also earned Golden Apple and Michigan Blue Ribbon Exemplary School Awards.
