ACU's Impact on the Students
By Clay Hughey, VP of International Operations
Family Legacy is a faith based Non-Governmental Organisation working in 17 communities of Lusaka. Our vision is to ensure that the Orphan and Vulnerable Children (OVC) under our sponsorship are educated and discipled. Our goal is to develop future leaders for Zambia that are well educated and rooted in the Word of God. Over the last few years the first of our sponsored children have begun to finish their secondary schooling, and our desire is that many of them will be able to continue their education by attending college or university in Zambia. Including the 20 children in The Scholars Programme, Family Legacy currently has over 40 children attending college or university. With 186 children scheduled to finish secondary school in 2016, that number will surely increase.

It is important to Family Legacy to find colleges and universities to partner with that see the value in educating the underserved children of this country. In addition, we want these partners to have a strong biblical worldview and teach from that perspective. From what we have seen and experienced this year, African Christian University is a perfect fit as a partner for our organisation.

The Scholars Programme at ACU has helped our students become more confident and self-motivated. We believe this is because of the strong Christian values, programmes and courses which are tailored to build students that will positively influence societies, communities and the country at large.  This has been evident in our students who have attended ACU this year. They have grown spiritually, become better stewards of God's resources and their vocabulary has improved tremendously. Their academic performance has improved, and most importantly their faith in God has grown. We believe the year our students have spent at ACU will springboard them into the next phase of their lives, whatever that may be.  It has been exciting to watch the transformation in the lives of these students. They have grown personally, academically, and spiritually.

Below are some of the individual quotations and testimonies from our students.

"ACU has helped me grow spiritually. The courses offered, such as Grand Narrative, Reasoning and Rhetoric have helped me think like a student and work extra hard" -Gloria Chulu

"The Scholars Programme has prepared me for further studies. Before ACU, I never believed in myself but now am confident about myself" -Given Kababu

"The Scholars Programme has made me change my perception towards life. The Grand Narrative has given me a wider understanding about God and also about other religions like Islam and African traditional religion" -Bright Mutale

"The Scholars Programme has made a huge impact in my life. It has equipped me for further studies. Courses offered are tailored to be applied even in our daily lives, and that we are created to glorify God in whatever we do, drink or eat. I never knew you would glorify God through mathematics" -Monica Zulu

"I have grown spiritually, physically and mentally. I had no confidence at all, but the Scholars Programme helped me build my confidence. I am able to stand and speak before people. My grammar has tremendously improved, and I have learned how to be responsible, respectful, caring and most importantly loving" -Enala Zungu

"The Scholars Programme has helped me become familiar with computer basics and language arts has improved my communication skills" -Elizabeth Mwelwa

We are so excited about the partnership that has begun between Family Legacy and ACU. As we continue to graduate more and more students we hope as many of them as possible will get to be a part of The Scholars Programme and eventually get a degree from African Christian University.
A Visit to ACU
By Holly Hoffman
In September I had the privilege to travel to Lusaka, Zambia to visit my son, Davey Hoffman. He is the mathematics instructor for ACU. I had no idea what to expect from the trip, never having flown outside of the U.S. before. I was able to spend 3 weeks on the campus of ACU, experiencing classes, staff prayer, student labour programme, choir rehearsal and chapel. I was also able to be in a mentoring group as a guest discussion facilitator. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the students and was able to learn why ACU is so important to the body of Christ.

I asked the students in my mentoring group a question. "Why do you feel people should support and pray for ACU?" The answers were quick in coming, eye opening and sobering. The first student said he always thought he would grow up and go to the local university. Dreaming of the day he would attend the higher education he walked past as a youngster. However, after he became a Christian and heard of ACU, he applied and is now attending. He said the difference between the schools is enormous. In another local university there are around 500 students in a class. The instructor comes in to class, gives the lecture and then leaves. No question and discussion time. No one making sure the students are getting the material presented. The students are just a number in the system. Also, the classes are all taught from a secular worldview. He said at ACU the instructors care if you are getting the material or struggling to understand. They take time to explain it to you and listen when you have questions. The classes are all taught from a Biblical perspective, and the curriculum is taught to glorify God in each subject. The whole of the college is Christ-centred and God-honouring.

The next student shared that the professors and staff really care about the students. She was absent one day and when she returned everyone had been asking if she was okay and told her how much she was missed. They prayed for her while she was absent and this really touched her heart. She told me she doesn't have people that care for her like that. She also shared that whenever she would set her personal things down and come back that no one had stolen her things. She feels safe and protected on the campus of ACU.

The last student shared that she had gone to an all-girls' school before ACU. She was thrilled there was no slapping at ACU because she had experienced a lot of slapping previously. She felt loved and safe also.

At ACU I noticed the students speak kindly to each other. They greet each other with encouraging words and truly care how their fellow classmates are doing. I have been on other campuses, and I have not heard students speak with such kindness as I have at ACU. These students are truly compassionate with each other, and isn't that what the Gospel is really about, "you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind....and you shall love your neighbour as yourself." (Matthew 22:37-39).

I have been so encouraged by the students at ACU and what the vision is for ACU, to "grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ." (2 Peter 3:18)

Your support of this new African venture to offer solidly Christian, higher education in the humanities and sciences is greatly appreciated.

By sponsoring a student, you can make a direct investment in his or her life and future. Equipped with a degree from ACU, our graduates will be better able to care for their families, and as ambassadors for Christ, to revitalise their communities for the glory of God. A one-year sponsorship can help ensure that a student succeeds at ACU and ultimately graduates. Any amount will help make a difference.

Thank you!
