                                                                  2nd December 2016

Dear Parents,

How quickly the term is flying by!  It was lovely to see everyone in their Christmas jumpers on Thursday - the donations were generous; thank you so much.  If you are able to donate or bake some cakes for the Christmas Fete cake stall, we would be pleased to accept them!  On Christmas Fete evening on Friday, there will be no 'official' After School Care but if you are unable to leave work early that day, please contact Miss Sharratt at the office as we may be able to assist, so that your child can join in all the festive fun! I am so looking forward to my first St Winnie's Christmas Fete.

The whole school is working hard to ensure a good show at Highfield Church on Wednesday 14th December. We will be bringing the children to the church and will meet you there.  The doors will open at 1.15pm for a 2pm start.  No tickets required!  We hope that you will be able to join our Nativity celebrations.  There is no After School Care on this day as it is expected that all children will be collected directly from the church.  Further details next week.

Final reminder for the ice cream orders for the pantomime by Monday morning please.  This coming week is the final week for all clubs.  Miss Sharratt has re-organised music lessons around the festivities at the end of week.
Have a good weekend.
Best wishes
Jan Caddy
St Winifred's School and the PTA would like to invite you all to the Christmas Fete. The fete is being held at the school on Friday 9th December from 3.30pm. It promises to be a fun-packed event with Christmas games, crafting stalls, tombola and lots, lots more plus Miss Falvey's magical Santa's Grotto. There will also be tea and coffee, mince pies and mulled wine.

The PTA will be selling Winitokens for the fete at the school gate every morning from Thursday 1st December (50p per token or 11 for £5). Winitokens will also be available for purchase at the fete.

Please contact Melissa Ndlovu, Catherine Cooper or Jenny Heywood if you would like to help with the fete set up or run a stall.

Looking forward to seeing you all at the Fete!
Form 6 this week
On Tuesday morning, we will be having our next house assembly - a chance for houses to make a final decision on which charity to support next term and new house badge designs.

In English this week, we have started a unit on biography and autobiography, comparing the two genres; and next week we will be writing a short autobiographical story and also a biography of a family member - research for this will take the form of a homework task.

In Maths, we will be continuing our problem solving work with measures - length, mass, capacity and time.  Then we will be starting our next unit building on all we learnt last half term about 2d shape and angles, including properties of shapes and particularly drawing them accurately and measuring and finding unknown angles (a target for many of us).

In Science, we will be writing up the conclusions of our experiment investigating the affect of different wire length on circuit components and starting to apply our electricity knowledge to different challenges.

In topic, we are comparing the location of our School with a rural School in Scotland using both online sources, such as google maps, and OS maps.  We are then using this evidence to write a comparative report using geographical language.  And in R.S., we are looking at the concept of prophecy within the Christmas story, in particularly the significance of the Magi's gifts to Jesus.
Form 5 this week
In Science this week we are working out how to separate different mixtures. The Science lab is in a terrible mess and all the different materials have become mixed up. Can Form 5 rescue the situation and separate the different mixtures before it's too late?

This week in English Form 5 will be continuing our work on explanations and instructions. We will also be studying how to use colons and semi-colons.

In Maths this week we are spending the week problem solving - looking at how to break the problem down into simpler steps to achieve success.

In History this week we will spend some time reading and discussing war poetry. We will even attempt to write our own versions.

Coming up in Form 1
Maths: This week the children will be looking at subtraction. We will be using number lines to work out our answers carefully and also focusing on how to record our number sentences, answers and workings accurately. Form 1 will also be learning about some of the other strategies to help us solve a range of subtraction problems especially as the numbers become higher!

English: The children will be entering into their final week of studying on 'The Great Fire of London' and this week they will be getting the opportunity to write their very own newspaper article! They will be selecting whether they want to focus their article around an event that took place at the start of the fire, during the fire or after it. The children will also be recalling the features usually found within a newspaper article and at how to incorporate these features into their own.

Science: In Science this week the children will be looking a magnetism and how magnets work. They will have a go at investigating whether or not different materials are magnetic. The children will then need to draw up their results and compare as well as discuss their findings.
Coming up for Form 3
In English this week Form 3 will be getting into the Christmas spirit by reading "Dear Father Christmas" by Alan Durant. The unit is all about writing letters and recognising how they are written. The children will learn how to start and end a letter, and how to replace bland verbs with powerful verbs. They will each write about their own personal Christmas experience and describe their feelings about the day.

In Science this week we will be exploring rocks. The children will take part in more practical workshop activities including separating sand and stones by sieving, using ICT to research rocks, looking up vocabulary in dictionaries, sorting and naming rocks and testing the effect of vinegar on rocks.

In Maths this week the class will learn about fractions. How to recognise, find and write fractions. The children will work with unit fractions and non-unit fractions with small denominators. They will be taught how to count in quarters, halves, thirds, eighths and sixths and how to use division to help find a fraction.

We will act out the story in sequence, retell it using finger puppets and make our own mini-books.

In Maths this week we will apply the skills and knowledge acquired this term to solve Christmas Mathematical problems. These will include the four number operations, including money and shape.

This week in Science we will learn about how some common materials are changed by heating. We will carry out an experiment to heat some mystery items. We will discuss whether these changes are reversible or irreversible.

Christmas arrives in Form 2 this week and out comes the glitter and sequins! We will make Christmas decorations and cards.

Reception and Preschool in the coming week
This week in Early Years we will be continuing with our Christmas theme. Our book of the week is 'Norman the Slug Saved Christmas'.  We will be starting to make our Christmas cards and other gifts too.

We will be talking about who is in our family and create pictures of our family members. This will be used to support addition and problem solving in Reception and number recognition and counting in Preschool.

For Literacy, Reception will be writing lists for Santa, whilst the Preschool children will be creating their lists for him.

Preschool phonic of the week is 'h'

The letters and sounds focus is 'body percussion'.

Form 4 this week
English: We begin a new topic this week looking at inventions of the future and imagine what it might look like to go to school when technology takes over. This will be the start of a new topic of biography where we will look at the lives of famous inventors from the past with a particular focus on Leonardo Da Vinci.

Maths: We will continue finding fractions of amounts this week and using them in everyday situations, most notable the sharing of chocolates and other treats. Furthermore, we will tackle simplifying large fractions to their lowest numerators and denominators.

History: We take a dip in to Bath this week as we discover about Roman hygiene and bathing with a focus on roman baths, in Bath. Pupils will be researching about the construction of the buildings, who would have used them and the importance for their daily lives.

Religious Studies:  Who would you give a gift to and what kind of thing it would be? The journey of the Three Kings to Bethlehem will be the focus of our learning, and we understand the symbolic meanings of the gifts they gave.
