A TORAH MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

In this week's Torah portion, Toldot, we are told that Rebecca is unable to conceive a child. The Torah points out that Isaac "entreated" God to help.  It strikes me as odd that only Isaac would do this.  Clearly Rebecca would have been asking for God's help as well.  So why does the Torah only mention Isaac's plea?

There are many possible answers to this query.  The first answer that occurs to me is that Rebecca's petition is a given.  Generally, the Torah uses words sparingly, so why waste ink telling us that Rebecca cried to God for a child when we "know" that, as a young wife wishing to be a mother, she must have done so?  The second answer might be that, God would only accept the prayers of a man.  We know this is not true because we have already read that God and Sarah had conversations. We also know from the Rosh Hashanah Haftarah we read every year, that God answered Hannah's prayer for a child.

So why does the Torah present Isaac as the pleader?  I think there are a few important lessons to be learned here.  First, we should pray for others, especially our loved ones.  Isaac could have taken the position that the problem was solely Rebecca's to bear.  Instead, he actively addresses the issue.  The act of confronting God on behalf of his wife is powerful and shows a deeply loving relationship.

But I think there is another lesson here.  Isaac is hurting. He, too, wants a child.  Rebecca's barrenness is Isaac's as well.  Each time she does not conceive, is a loss to him.  The Torah is telling us to take note of this.

I think that it goes just a bit further.  Isaac is, indeed, hurting on a very personal level, but he is hurting for his beloved as well.  In our lives we unfortunately know of several folks who have been diagnosed with various illnesses or have suffered physical or emotional setbacks.  Our natural tendency is to reach out to the person with the illness; we seek to shelter the injured party; our energies go toward helping that person.  But the problem does not reside only with the poor soul who has received a bad diagnosis.  A spouse, child, and a parent, are each impacted by the shattering of a life.

God receives Isaac's prayer because the Holy One knows that, like Rebecca, Isaac needs God's presence.   We are each created in God's image. As we travel through our days it is important to reach out to those around us who are suffering from illness.   At the same time we need to be aware that the loved ones of that person need our physical, spiritual, and emotional help as well.

Do God's work. Share your strength.  Repair the world one person at a time.

Shabbat Shalom - Rabbi Michael S. Jay

FIRES RAGING IN ISRAEL

Jewish Federations are collecting funds to help address the impact of an unprecedented 480 fires that raged across Israel, displacing nearly 100,000 people and ravaging thousands of acres of land.

The impact of the devastation on Israelis will be long-lasting. People must now return to their damaged homes, schools and neighborhoods. Thousands have no homes to return to at all. Many community institutions that provide vital programs and services-including those of our partners-have been hit hard. They will be struggling to rebuild just when they are needed most.

And in towns and cities across the country, people will need to join together and help one another overcome the traumatic impact of these unsettling times.

The Government of Israel is supporting those impacted by the fires primarily through local municipalities. Jewish Federations are working with our local partners and the National Emergency Authority to assess urgent and emerging needs.

One hundred percent of your donation will go to the Israel Fire Emergency Fund.

GIVING OPPORTUNITIES

STOCK DONATIONS
T here is still time to make a Stock Donation to the JCC of LBI in 2016. Two ways to save on your taxes- If you donate a stock that has appreciated, you don't pay a capital gains tax on the increase in value, and of course you claim the donation as a charitable contribution. In this manner you help the JCC with your stock donation, and help yourself.

Your stock broker knows how to do this and the JCC can be of assistance. It's easy, and a good way to help the JCC stay healthy f inancially.

HIGH HOLIDAY APPEAL
Your gift to the 5777 High Holiday Appeal is vital to the operation of the JCC of LBI.  We depend on your generous support.

You should have received an Appeal letter a few weeks ago. Please take a few minutes to reflect on how your contribution can make a difference and return your card and appeal donation in the envelope provided.  If you can't find the card, that's okay - you can send your appeal contribution to the office (2411 Long Beach Blvd., Spray Beach, NJ 08008) noting that it is for the High Holiday Appeal Campaign.

MORRIS L. SHAPIRO ENDOWMENT FUND
All organizations should have a substantial endowment fund to ensure its continuation. Except for dire emergencies, the principal amounts in the fund cannot be used to run the organization. Interest earned from the account may be used.  As previously announced, Herb and Selma Shapiro have created a JCC  Endowment Fund to honor Herb's father. It will be known as  "The Morris L. Shapiro Endowment Fund at the JCC of LBI " The Shapiros have generously pledged a total of $50,000 to fund this. While initially established by the Shapiros, anyone may contribute to this important fund.

Join Herb and Selma in helping assure the continuity of our JCC, and our ability to continue providing a full-service congregation to serve the Jewish people of the area. All members are encouraged to help this important effort by contributing to this Fund.

Your gift to the fund can be sent to the JCC Office. Please mark your check accordingly.

AUDIO/VISUAL PROJECT
We are very excited about the decision of the Board of Directors to pursue the enhancement of the audio system for the JCC of LBI as well as the purchase of a projection system.  This multi-phased project will allow us to become a venue for expanded programming and opens us up to many wonderful opportunities for future planning.  Your gift large or small is much appreciated. Please send your contribution to the JCC office: 2411 Long Beach Blvd., Spray Beach, NJ 08008 and note on the memo line A/V Project.
