Adoption Weekend - November 19th/20th

Adoption Weekend is a time where we celebrate all types of families, especially those that are non-traditional. Candles will be lit at all services in honor of these families.

Ephesians 1:5 "God destined us for adoption as God's children through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of God's will"

New Member Weekend
New Member Weekend is Saturday, November 19th and Sunday, November 20th. We will take in new members at all three services. If you are interested in becoming a member of Edgebrook Lutheran Church, please contact the church office or email Pastor Joe at [email protected] .

St. Lucia
Our Lucia 2016 celebration will be on Sunday, December 11th at a special service at 10:00am.

The ticket price for the Lucia Brunch will be $20 for adults, $10 for children under 12 and children under 3 will be free. Tickets will be on sale during coffee hour beginning on Sunday, November 13th. You may also email Karen Newton at [email protected] to reserve your seats. Please note that seating is limited and fills up fast, so get your tickets early so that you will not miss this wonderful holiday event.

The Procession will take place during the time slot of the service that would normally be the Children's message. There is no rehearsal for the Lucia Procession. The children just meet up in the Luther Room before the service and we will give them a costume to wear...We will "walk them through" what they will do that morning.

Any and all children and youth are welcome to participate. In order to prepare, we need to know the names and ages of all who will be participating so that we can organize the costumes. Please let Karen Newton know by November 30th if your child will participate in this year's Lucia Procession.

If you have any questions please contact Karen Newton or Joanne Friz.

Sunday School and Christmas Program
At Sunday School this coming Sunday, 11/20/16 we will be devoting most of our time to preparing the kids for the Christmas program.

There is  No Sunday School on 11/27 (Thanksgiving Break) and Santa Lucia is on 12/11/16.

This leaves us only two Sundays to practice before our performance (11/20 and 12/4). If you know your child/children are not going to be able to participate in the  Christmas Program on 12/18/16, please let me or your child's Sunday School teacher know.  We are giving out small speaking parts in the program and want to make sure our speakers will be present in the day of the performance!  Also, there will be some non-speaking parts for shepherds, angels, etc.

We are planning to have a dress rehearsal of the program at the Saturday evening service on 12/17/16.  More details to come.

There is also no Sunday School on 12/11/16 as there is only one service at 10am that day as we celebrate Santa Lucia. If you would like your child/children to walk and dress up for the Santa Lucia procession on 12/11/16, please email Karen Newton at [email protected]. It is a lovely tradition that has been carried on for many years at ELC.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Also, please say a prayer for speedy healing for Sue Neyrinck, one of our Pre-K teachers.  Sue recently broke her arm.

Thank you and God Bless,
Wendy Campbell

Lutheran Disaster Response
Hurricane Matthew

(From the ELCA Website)

The situation:
Hurricane Matthew, one of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes in years, hit Haiti, Cuba and Jamaica with heavy rain and dangerous winds. Landslides occurred in the Dominican Republic due to heavy rain as well. The Bahamas are in the hurricane's path, and it could make landfall on the east coast of the United States. The National Hurricane Center has reported Hurricane Matthew to be "extremely dangerous" with conditions favorable for it to maintain its strength.

Our response:
Your support through Lutheran Disaster Response will bring God's hope and healing to those affected by this hurricane. Where the hurricane has already hit the hardest in Haiti, Lutheran Disaster Response's trusted partner is already there with relief material. Our response is spanning across several countries, especially Haiti and Cuba. In the U.S., Lutheran Disaster Response coordinators are collaborating with local community leaders, civic organizations, ecumenical partners and officials to begin planning the proper responses. Together, we will work with congregations, synods, trusted partners and companion churches in the area that know the communities well and will walk with people on the road to recovery.

What you can do:

Pray
Please pray for the people who have been affected and are in the path of Hurricane Matthew. May God's healing presence give them peace and hope in their time of need.

Give
Gifts to  "Hurricane Matthew"  will be used to assist those affected by the hurricane until the response is complete.

New Hope Donations
The food pantry is in special need of men's toiletries, namely aerosol shaving cream, disposable razors, deodorant and shampoo.

If you are able, please place donations in the collection cabinet in Fellowship Hall in the bin marked New Hope Food Pantry.  Your contribution will be greatly appreciated.

Also, it's getting cold outside and warm winter coats are also needed by the New Hope clients.  Should you have a coat that is in good condition and is no longer needed in your home, please consider donating.

Please hang your donated coat/s on the rack in Fellowship Hall marked "Coat Collection" and the coats will be delivered to the New Hope Pantry.

Families Helping Families
"And a child shall lead them" . . .

Along with a large quantity of donated toiletries and 12 winter coats, a check was delivered this week to the New Hope Community Food Pantry to fund Thanksgiving meals for 18 nearby families who might not otherwise be able to afford a holiday meal.   The check is the money our Sunday School children collected in their Families Helping Families project which was also supplemented with donations from the congregation.

Thank you to all who participated, with particular thanks to the Sunday School students and their dedicated teachers.  We at ELC will never know who directly benefited and enjoyed a Thanksgiving dinner, but certainly the children of the congregation benefited too.  They learned to care for others, to share what they have been blessed to receive, and that everyone can make a difference.  Great lessons to learn so early in life!
