Happy Holidays neighbors!
The world has a lot of aggressiveness and anger these days. We see hate crime and violence cropping up across the country and the media, and upset people who focus on this and contribute to people acting out in hateful dangerous ways. Our community should be our safe haven from the harshness filling so much of the world. We can do this by working together to encourage kindness, neighborliness and community in all that we do. These are not things the city can mandate, these are things that only work when the community treats one another as neighbors who they depend on to help make their neighborhood safe and positive - not as someone who stole their parking spot, cut them off in traffic, or maybe even supported a different candidate than them in a recent election.
A community is not just a synonym for the geographic location where your house resides. A community is a group of people who work together and support one another because they know their lives are enriched by living near and having daily interactions with neighbors.
Humans are a social species and benefit from social communal interactions and it is important for us all to acknowledge that our community is made better when we help others and respect our neighbors. Along with this is cleaning up dog waste, driving safely, observing rules of parking and acting neighborly. We are all in this together, and we all need to be respectful that everyone around us is dealing with the same stresses and daily life problems that deserve respect and kindness from the rest of us.
In addition to thinking more about our responsibility to be kind and neighborly there are always plenty of opportunities that you can participate in to be a positive part of our community. For example, you can join "CD3 Walks the Walk", this is a walking service group that my office started with Belmont Shore resident, Lori Barber. Lori is our walking group leader. Each month she selects a route for us to walk. Last month, we had about 30 people in attendance and we focused on the Belmont Shore area, picking up trash as we walked from Marine Stadium Park to the Granada beach parking lot. On December 11th at 8 am, we will meet at Marine Stadium Park, walk to the Bellflower median (at PCH) and pick up trash along the median and along PCH. Thanks to resident Randy Gordon for helping us pick this route for the December walk. This monthly event is a great way to get exercise, socialize with your neighbors and do something positive for our community. Please join us on 12/11. Coffee at Gelson's at the midway point is on me!

Leadership Forum - Empowerment of Girls and Young Women
Saturday, December 3rd @ 10 AM
It is imperative, now more than ever, that we teach young women about leadership. I want to show young women that gender should never be a roadblock to success. When Mary Scott, local resident and mother met with me on this subject, I felt compelled to do something. With the help of Kristi Allen, VP of Operations at Hotel Maya, Dr. Sandy Blazer, Principal of Wilson HS, City Auditor Laura Doud and Sharon Wie from the Interval House, we are organizing a young girls/women leadership forum set to take place on

CD3 Walks The Walk
Let's come together as a community. The 3rd District is a passionate group and here's your chance to get involved while getting some exercise. We will walk, talk and beautify our community on Sunday, December 11th.
Our walking group will once again meet at Marine Stadium Park. From there, we will walk to Bellflower Blvd and pick up trash in the median near Stoneybrook Villas and then head to PCH & 2nd Street. We will stop for coffee at Gelson's Bakery on the way back to Marine Stadium Park. This is a great opportunity to meet your neighbors, get some exercise and clean-up our community!

34th Annual Belmont Shore Christmas Parade
Please join us this
Saturday, December 5th at 6 PM for the 34th Annual Belmont Shore Christmas Parade. Councilwoman Price will proudly lead this year's parade down East Second Street. You don't want to miss this opportunity for the whole community to come together and celebrate this year's them, "A Candy Land Christmas."
The parade will pay special tribute to the LBPD K-9 officers in honor of Officer Credo who lost his life this past year.
Charter Spectrum will be televising the parade with parade announcers, Bruce MacRae, UPS VP State Gov. Affairs, Misty May Treanor, 3-time Olympic Gold Medalist & Executive Director of the BSBA Dede Rossi will conduct interviews on the street. The parade will be shown on Charter Spectrum throughout the month of December.
The Parade will begin on Livingston & 2nd and march down East Second Street to the beat of over a dozen local marching bands and over 100 entries. And of course, no Christmas Parade would be complete without an appearance by good ole' St. Nick!
Belmont Shore side streets will be closed at 4pm and 2nd St. will be closed to traffic at 5pm. No property of any kind is permitted on the sidewalk or center median until 5pm (chairs, blankets, tables, coolers, tape, chains etc ). All items will be removed and taken to Bayshore Library for pick-up. Most importantly, the areas may not be "roped off". Such obstacles and possessions may be removed and taken to the Bay Shore Library for pick up after the event.

Naples Island Boat Parade
Naples Island 70th Annual Boat Parade will be on Saturday, December 17th. The Large boats will start at 6 PM followed by the smaller boats at 6:45 PM. Come cheer on your 3rd District Councilwoman as she make her way through the lovely canals in Naples.

Recap of November Events
Community Meeting on SEASP
On November 10th our office
held a community meeting on the Southeast Area Specific Plan (SEASP), which is a planning document that replaces the Southeast Area Development and Improvement Plan (SEADIP) that has been in effect since 1977. SEASP will serve to orient future development based on community input and market needs. The city and our office have done a great deal of outreach on this proposed plan
including our meeting earlier last month

meeting was held at the Seaport Marina Hotel which is a property within the SEASP area and has its own project being developed. (see recap below on 2nd & PCH). At the meeting residents were able to ask the Councilwoman and city staff questions
on topics
ranging from traffic, to design, to the future of the wetlands, to changes to density, to open space and many other detailed questions that resulted in detailed answers from experts on land use, development, and traffic. The meeting
included broad-based conceptual ideas as well as very detailed policy and state law related discussions that continued until all questions from the community had been answered.

Southeast Area Specific Plan Update
2nd & PCH
On November 19th,
CenterCal Properties, a Retail Development Company, provided a brief overview, diagrams and the below video of the proposed project at 2nd and PCH. The project will fall under the current 1977 SEADIP guidelines of a 2 story structure. It will include view corridors to the marina as well as social gathering spots for shoppers. The developer is positioned to attract higher end retail shops and restaurants at the gateway corner into Belmont Shore. They have already secured as their anchor property, Whole Foods Market, which will be relocating from the adjacent strip center to a larger space at 2nd& PCH. The proposed date of completion for this project is expected to be around Fall 2018.

Road Diet Meeting
We recently held a second community meeting regarding the planned implementation of the Ocean Blvd Road Diet. This meeting was a follow-up to a previous meeting in which the plan was introduced. Residents had the chance to speak with city Traffic Engineers, representatives from Police and Fire, as well as Special Events staff. Residents had the opportunity to address their remaining concerns regarding the plan and to receive detailed information about the plan's implementation. We expect this project to start in the next few weeks.
Alamitos Heights Improvement Association Tree Lighting & Snow Play
Even though the Colorado Lagoon is under construction, it did not stop the Alamitos Heights Improvement Association from lighting their Christmas tree, playing in the snow and having Santa come by on his fire engine. Everyone enjoyed themselves with cookies, hot cocoa and socializing with their neighbors. The Christmas tree is proudly displayed in-front of Fire Station 14 for all to enjoy.
Belmont Shore Median Meeting
On Wednesday, November 9th we held our second community outreach for the design phase of the Belmont Shore, 2nd Street Median Project. Residents gathered and expressed their thoughts on design and plant options for the median. Consideration was given to this area to make sure to keep the current spacing allowance for the many activities the Shore provides. A design presentation will be scheduled in January so please look for the date in future emails from us.

Nina Moussavi - District Office Director
Please help me welcome our newest District 3 team member, Nina Moussavi. Nina will be serving as the District Office Director and will be stationed at the field office. She will split her time between City Hall and the field office but will usually be at the field office on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
Nina graduated with honors from Long Beach State, where she received a dual bachelors in Business Finance and French Language. Go Beach!
She is currently a Dean's Honor Scholarship recipient at the University of San Diego School of Law, where she focuses on Intellectual Property law.
Nina is driven by her philanthropic passion and has volunteered hundreds of hours to pro bono clinics around Southern California helping underrepresented communities and domestic violence victims. In her free time, Nina enjoys cooking, traveling, and generally just being outside in nature.
Nina has proudly called Long Beach home for the past 6 years and is looking forward to many more to come. Stop by the field office and swap recipes or share travel stories; she has plenty of interesting stories from her travels and hundreds of unique recipes to share.

Bluff Park Historic Lamppost Project
The mission of the Bluff Park Historic Lamppost Project is to remove the modern, out-of-character street lights in the Bluff Park Historic District and replace them with replicas that match the look and pattern of the late-1920's ornamental lampposts that now exist only along East 1st Street. In so doing, the residents will enhance the community with a sense of place, history, and camaraderie.

City Council Meetings are held every Tuesday evening, with the exception of the last Tuesday of the month when council is "dark." Meetings are held in City Hall - Council Chambers (333 W. Ocean Blvd.) at approximately 5pm. Times do change, so please check with our office or website for exact times. City Council meetings are open to the public and we encourage your attendance, especially if there is an important topic up for discussion.

Coyote Sightings Prompt Safety and Prevention Reminders
Seeing a coyote walking down a busy city street isn't as uncommon as most would think. Recent coyote activity around Long Beach and surrounding areas gives reason for reminding residents of important safeguards to protect pet lives and property against these wild animals.
Contrary to popular belief, coyotes do not require open space to survive, and have successfully adapted to living in close proximity to humans. Coyotes are most active at dusk and dawn, and in urban environments they are more active at night. However, they can be seen at any time of day.
An Animal Control Officer will respond to coyote calls if the coyote is sick or injured, out in the daytime in areas around people, especially children, such as parks or schools or anytime there is an attack or threatening behavior towards a person or pet.
According to the U.S. Humane Society, "Coyotes are found in every state of the nation, except for Hawaii". It is important to learn techniques to compassionately co-exist with coyotes and protect yourself and your pets." The following techniques are recommended:
*Never feed coyotes or any other wildlife.
*Keep pets, especially cats and small dogs, and pet food inside. If feeding outside, feed pets during the day (no more than one hour) and remove the food bowls when finished.
*Stay close to your pet when taking them outdoors and always keep them on a
leash, especially from dusk through early morning hours.
*Remove fallen fruit from the ground.
*Bag food wastes such as meat scraps or leftover pet food.
*Keep trash in containers with tight-fitting lids.
*Use "hazing" techniques to shoo away coyotes, such as standing tall, yelling and
waving arms while approaching the coyote; using a whistle, air horn, bell or other device; banging pots or pans together; stomping your feet; using a water hose, pepper spray, or throwing tennis balls or rocks at the coyote.
*Never run from a coyote.
Long Beach Animal Care Services is requesting the assistance of the community. By educating yourself and your neighbors and using hazing techniques to keep coyotes wild, you can help to establish a peaceful co-existence and help make Long Beach the safest large City for people and animals. Please contact us to obtain flyers to give to your neighbors or to schedule a speaker for a neighborhood watch or community meeting.
