Jack Salo, Executive Director

National Rural Health Day was observed on November 17, 2016.

"Nearly 62 million Americans live in rural and frontier communities. Rural communities are wonderful places to live and work, but these communities also have unique healthcare needs, which is why the National Organization of State Offices of Rural sets aside the third Thursday of every November - November 17th, 2016 - to celebrate National Rural Health Day." https://nosorh.org/calendar-events/nrhd/

The Rural Health Network of SCNY appreciates this opportunity to celebrate the great work that is being done in rural health and to bring awareness of the continuing challenges to improve the health and well-being of rural people and communities across the country. Here in New York State we are fortunate to have over thirty rural health networks that work at the community level to improve health and healthcare. The rural health networks are provided important support through the NYS Office of Rural Health.

So how can you learn more about rural health issues, policy and best practices? Here are some resources that we have found helpful in our work:

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month

Type 2 diabetes has risk factors including: age, heredity, ethnicity, lifestyle, weight, physical inactivity, and pregnancy history. As we age, our risk increases. Individuals born of Native- American, African-American, or Hispanic dissent are at higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Our body mass index (BMI) of 25 and over, if we birthed a baby weighing 9 pounds or more, or if we had a gestational diabetes diagnosis during any pregnancies also increases our chances of developing Type 2 diabetes during our lifetime.

Adults can prevent diabetes by modifying behaviors: increasing physical activity, reducing intake of high calories and high fat foods, increasing daily fiber, ceasing smoking, controlling blood pressure/cholesterol levels/weight. Promoting these same healthy habits in youth can also reduce onset of type 2 diabetes.

Do you know your risk score?
During November, please click on this link for a self-risk assessment.

Call for action:
1) take a self- risk test and calculate your score, 9 or > is diabetes potential
