Important Reminders
We want to remind parents about a few important  things!
  1. Student drop off is up at the horseshoe drive, located in the front of the building.  For safety reasons, please do not drop students off in the lobby.
  2. Please do not drop your child off before 8:30 AM, staff is not available to watch students.
  3. If your child is going to arrive after the 8:40 AM bell, it is of the utmost importance that you contact the school to let us know.
Thank you for your help keeping our students safe!
Principal's Message
Dr. Haynes
Our natural world can be a fascinating place for elementary students. Things we have seen happen before can spark curiosity and generate questions that lead to wonderful discoveries.  The devastation from recent storms such as Harvey, Irma and Maria made headlines in both local and national news. Often, we feel helpless watching from afar. At Memorial, we saw these storms as opportunities for learning. Our students regularly discuss weather in their classes, but this year, thanks to our new STEAM class that integrates Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics, we took things further.

Students in fourth grade went through the process followed by engineers and technicians to design safer structures that could withstand the wind and rain of hurricanes, as you can see in the photos. Once a design was drafted, students worked in groups to revise and refine their structure, asking questions and making hypotheses about its stability. After deciding on a design, students constructed their structure and brought it in to the STEAM lab for testing.

It was so much fun for our students to test and see which "buildings" would survive the elements! Some of their structures certainly held up to the extreme conditions, while others did not. Student groups discussed their findings and shared what they learned in class with others. They also talked about what changes they would make to their structures to make them safer in the future.

This is just one example of the outstanding work all of our teachers and students are doing at Memorial. Our students are very fortunate to have teachers and staff dedicated to providing a variety of innovative learning experiences.

Every student at Memorial will have an opportunity to work on a STEAM project this year covering topics across the spectrum and geared to their interests. We look forward to seeing the many fantastic ideas that come from our students this year and encourage you to talk to your children about their experiences. It's possible that our students will be building structures and designing new items to improve our lives in the very near future, and with these thinkers, what an exciting future we have in store!

IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS FOR FIFTH GRADE STUDENTS
Please be advised that when your child turns 11 years old, and it has been 5 years or longer since their last Tetanus toxoid-containing immunization, they must receive a Tdap vaccine, a booster dose of tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis, as required by NH state Immunization laws. If your child has a documented medical contraindication to the pertussis vaccine, a Td booster is acceptable. In addition, every child entering the 6 th grade must have had 2 doses of the Varicella vaccine (chicken pox). If your child has a well-child visit scheduled within this school year, please discuss these requirements with the doctor at the time of the visit, and provide a copy of their physical and updated immunization record to the school nurse.

Thank you,

Cindy Cole, BSN

Preschool News
The Afternoon Preschool has been busy this month talking about apples and pumpkins! We have been working on our cutting skills to make apple projects. First we cut strips of red paper to glue inside an apple outline. Next we colored some apples with crayons and cut them out...it is hard work for little hands! We also used apple stickers to count apples and put them in trees. It is fun to squish and cut our black and orange play dough, and it helps us build muscles in our hands at the same time!

We love to sing our pumpkin and bat songs at circle. We use pumpkins on sticks to sing a song called "The Pumpkins Are Here" that really helps us work on directional and positional language. We also sing "The Bat Song" where Mrs. Cole blows up a black balloon and squeaks it like a bat. At the end, the "bat" flies around the room and we all scream! It is so much fun!

Autumn is a fun time of year to be a Preschooler and we are looking forward to many more seasonal projects in the weeks to come!

Memorial School provides a variety of technology tools for learning, whether in the classroom, gym, library, or the new STEAM lab. So that everyone has full access to the many sound-based activities, we ask that each student bring a set of headphones (please, no earbuds ) for their individual use in school.

For those children who are not able to bring their own to school, we will continue to provide school-owned headphones.

Please contact Jodi Tamayoshi at [email protected] with any questions.
Music News with Ms. Cunningham
Happy Halloween from the Music Room!

Next week, students in grades one through three will be performing 'Old Woman All Skin and Bones' using a variety of instruments-xylophones, metallophones, woodblocks, bells, guiros, claves, ahokos, maracas, and everyone's new favorite instrument-the thunder tube! This is a call and response song that students could definitely teach their parents!
This week, students in grades four followed a listening map to Camille Saint-Saens' spooky Halloween piece 'Danse Macabre' for orchestra. Next week, we will actively listen to the piece again, but students will choose to either be a ghost, skeleton, or pumpkin. One student will be the fiddler who raises these characters from their graves.
This week, fifth graders learned about and listened to 'Peer Gynt: In the Hall of the Mountain King.' They did a mirroring movement exercise to listen for musical phrases. Next week, students will act this story out by being trolls! Take a listen to this piece of music at home, I bet your family will recognize it!
The past few weeks, all classes have started with a Question of the Day which sparked some great discussions. Last week, we voted on whether or not playing music was like playing a sport. The results were split pretty evenly in the classes. Total, 106 students said yes, while 79 students said no. Think ahead, students! Next week's class will open with this Question of the Day- What can make music spooky?

Reading Specialist News with Dr. Corbin
Last month our students completed the first 20 days of Readers' Workshop. During this time they learned classroom routines for the readers' workshop. Some of these routines included Read to Self, which is choosing a just right book, picking a good place to read, and reading the whole time; Partner Reading, when two students have the same title and take turns reading to each other, discussing as they go along (quietly); Center Activities which could include word work, poetry, digital reading using their devices; and small group meetings with the teacher or other adult.
Once these routines were established we began instruction in comprehension during our readers' workshop. These lessons include Using your Schema, Making Connections, Asking Questions while you read, Making inferences, and Using Fix-up strategies for starters. Please ask your children about these-they'll be surprised that you know!
Thank you,

Box Tops News
Hi Box Toppers,

Our first submission date, Nov.1st is almost here.  The school gets a check made out to Memorial School for the cash totals for everything we have collected so far. Remember that the money that comes to Memorial because you took the time to clip and send the Box Tops for Education to school helps defray the costs of yearly field trips like Plimouth Plantation, Museum of Science, and Strawberry Banke.  What great ways to make education come alive for our kids or grandkids!

Since this is almost Halloween it is time to mention magic.  This magical Nov. 1st date also coincides with the ending of the monthly Trophy Contest and the Quarterly contest.  Which class will keep the trophy next month?  (So far Ms. Gwynne's class is ahead but who knows?  Anything can happen.).

As always you can reach me at  [email protected].

Sanborn Regional Budget Committee
Did You Know?
by Annie Collyer, Chairman Sanborn Budget Committee
Did you know that the Sanborn Regional School District Budget Committee met on October 12 with the new Business Administrator Michele Croteau, to review the format in which the Administration's spending and revenue projections for the District will be communicated this year?  Ms. Croteau has been establishing procedures for the financial order of the District, with the goal of being as transparent as possible.
The initial budget meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 1 at 6 pm in the High School library in a joint meeting of the Budget Committee and the School Board.  The public is invited to attend and/or to view the video that will be available on the SAU17 website, to be fully informed.  The Budget Committee, which has the duty to prepare and present the budget to the voters on February 7, 2018,  will hold two-three other joint meetings with the School Board to make sure the budget aligns with District goals for education, with prudent attention to the funding provided by the taxpayers of the community.  The members established their calendar of budget development meetings as well as guidelines for conducting their business.
The minutes, once approved, and the video of the meeting, the Budget Committee Guidelines and the calendar for the Budget process are available on the District website www.SAU17.org.
