 PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
President's Message
Ellen Onstad, CSI, CDT, Board President

One of the first things I did with CSI was meeting summaries. I find it funny that I am back there again. The November meeting topic was the future of specifications.Within the first few minutes we talked about mentors. Everyone on the panel I would consider a mentor. I could ask them all questions or ask for help or turn to them for CSI or work assistance.

The panel consisted of two fellows, three past region presidents/directors, and four past chapter presidents.  All of them have been on a CSI board of directors for at least a year, most for many more. While they have energy and knowledge and will answer any question thrown at them, what happens when they retire or get so busy they can't take on another project or decide they want to go into project management or something else? Who will take their place?

In December we are taking on the next generation as the ugly sweater contest continues. These are those professionals moving up the ranks of their local firms, shadowing in larger projects, and one day taking over the world. I don't want to get into what sort of world we will leave them or how this past election changes many things. I want to look at what we can do to spread knowledge and the information about CSI.

Leadership begins at the bottom, volunteering for small tasks and working your way up to committee chair. If the group needs an infusion of new ideas, then jump with both feet! If it's not something that works, find a new committee or create a new one. We have lots of opportunities here in Portland and nationally.

It's been a crazy few months. It feels like just yesterday I was standing in front of the Chapter at the golf tournament, and shortly it will be 2017. Where does the time go? Thank you everyone for your support!

November Recap: The Future of Specifications
Alicia Clark, CSI, CDT, Programs Chair

A loyal group of people ventured out on election night to attend our Future of Specifications Panel, and while a lot of interesting ideas were discussed, the overwhelming consensus was that this is just the beginning of the conversation. Many of our specifiers are retiring and many young professionals don't want to be pigeon-holed into becoming the next spec writer, and with the ever growing complexity of how buildings are built, the current format for specs might not continue to be the best format for the information. Portland CSI wants to make sure we stay on the cutting edge of leading our industry, so expect to see this conversation continue and make sure to check out the video on the Portland CSI YouTube Channel. A BIG THANK YOU to our sponsors Willamette Graystone and Versico Roofing Systems, and all our distinguished panelists!
Industry Forum 2017 Welcomes Keynote Michael Rotundi

We're pleased to welcome Michael Rotundi of RoTo Architecture as the Industry Forum 2017 Keynote speaker. As with past Industry Forums, the 2017 keynote promises to be inspiring! "I like the fact that this has a practical and technical underpinning to it-I will add a poetic component to it as I describe a creative process that considers purpose, meaning and material details...as I go from straw bale to teflon construction," says Michael.

Since its founding in 1992, RoTo has envisioned and built a wide range of project types varying in scope and complexity. RoTo Architecture has exhibited an openness in spirit that has enabled them to collaborate in a  genuine sense with those who commission and inhabit the architecture they facilitate.

 EDUCATION
A Resilient Spirit
Leslie Case, CSI, Publicity Committee Chair

It seems no matter where my nomadic life takes me there is always a fault, a great big fault. Not in my personal life (although that has been known to be true) but rather under my feet, in the earth.

This time, it is the Cascadia Fault and from the Learning and Libations last Wednesday night I learned even more about what we can expect from the "big one".  I came away that night feeling unsettled and concerned enough to put together some supplies just in case. It really got me thinking about the people who choose to live in Oregon with possible impending disaster; the teams of people that find the budgets to retro fit old buildings and create a better plan for future buildings, the hundreds of labor hours that go into planning emergency response systems, services and shelters. Everyone with their eye on having strong, effective resilience planning. It occurred to me that it is also about the people who love this state and stay in the face of danger, that's what I call a resilient spirit! Thank you to Kent Yu for an excellent presentation.

Stay tuned next year as we delve deeper into Resiliency and Preparedness in both the Learning and Libations Series and the April Chapter meeting. If you missed Kent's presentation, you can find it on our Portland CSI YouTube Channel.
Learning & Libations Series is Home for the Holidays
Jake LaManna, CSI, CDT, Education Chair

3-red-ornaments.jpg The Learning and Libations Series will be taking a brief break through the holiday season, but make sure to keep an eye out for Roofing 301 (the third part of our roofing series) to conclude in January. And even though the committee will be stuffing themselves full of turkey and other holiday treats we are all still busy planning the next year of amazing events! Thank you so much to our Series Sponsor Versico Roofing Systems for making this year's events so spectacular. We hope you all have a wonderful holiday season and we will see you in 2017!!!

 MEMBERSHIP
In Memory
Lee Kilbourn, FCSI, Membership Chair

The Willamette Valley Chapter CSI family received sad news recently.

Benny Bartel, one of the chapter's earliest members, passed away peacefully last month. Benny saw and enjoyed much over his almost century-long time on this earth. We will forever remember him for his noteworthy contributions to many significant projects in the Eugene-Springfield area. He made his mark in life; his legacy will remain with us for many years.

Morgan Deines leaves us at far too young an age, the tragic victim of a senseless crime. Morgan's dad, Tom, FCSI, CCCA, is a Construction Specifications Institute stalwart: past Institute Vice-President, past Northwest Region Director, and perennial member of the Institute's Technical Committee. We mourn along with Tom, Tom's wife Trixie, Morgan's mother Sirrka, and all of Morgan's other family and friends. Words alone cannot adequately express our sorrow and condolences."

Jerry McDonnell

Published obituaries for Benny, Morgan, and Jerry, which paint a picture of their lives for those who may not have enjoyed the honor of knowing them, may be found at a blog published for the SouthWest Oregon Chapter of the American Institute of Architects by Randy Nishimura, AIA, CSI, CCS .
