Happy Holidays from the New Life Wellness Center team!

It's the most wonderful time of the year -- and arguably the most overwhelming time as well!

The shopping, wrapping, baking, visiting and festivities all place demands on us physically and mentally.  Avoid the crowds and minimize your stress by giving your loved ones the gift of wellness -- we're offering gift certificates for a variety of our wellness services.  See article below for details.

'Tis the season to practice mindfulness -- to take time out for ourselves, count our blessings and truly appreciate spirit of the season.   Commit to carving out a few minutes each day to focus on the present; take in the sights, sounds and smells of the holiday and put aside the worries about holiday demands -- maybe treat yourself to one of our therapeutic massages or relaxing guided meditations !  Being mindful  can help reduce stress and make the holidays more meaningful.

Wishing you and your family a very joyful holiday season and a happy, healthy new year!

ADHD and Concussion Risk

Impulsive and hyperactive behaviors are common symptoms in children with attention disorders. These classic ADHD behaviors are not only disruptive, but also tend to be dangerous, putting children at an increased risk of concussion.  In fact, research shows that teen athletes with ADHD are 3.5 times more likely to sustain concussion than neurotypical athletes-- and a new study has found that these teen report long-term symptoms of concussion such as headache, dizziness, concentration issues and forgetfulness, with girls showing symptoms more often than boys.

Imbalanced brain-wave activity can produce the impulsivity and hyperactivity that leads to more risk-taking behaviors and the potential for injury.   A Quantitative Electroencephalogram, also known as a QEEG brain map, is an effective, non-invasive tool that helps identify the abnormal patterns that trigger hyperactivity and focus issues.  For athletes, a "Q" taken at the beginning of the sports season provides a baseline reading on brain-wave activity and can be helpful in developing a treatment plan in the unfortunate case of brain injury like concussion.

Teen athletes work hard to train their bodies, build their stamina and strengthen their muscles. Knowing the risks associated with ADHD and concussion, the same investment to training the body should be made to training brain-wave patterns to help prevent future injuries and to provide long-term brain health benefits.

Check out  Dr. Reynolds' video -- then call to schedule your child's QEEG brain map. $50 off this month. 631.265.1223.

It's Flu Season -- Boost Your Immune System Naturally

Cold and flu season is officially here -- time to take action to boost your immune system. A healthy diet and regular exercise can help keep your body strong to fend off illness, but did you know that acupuncture is a natural and effective tool for fighting viruses?

According to Lori Fortunato, LAc, our staff acupuncturist, acupuncture helps to increase the body's production of white blood cells, thereby enabling the immune system to fight threats like viruses.

Protect yourself against seasonal sickness -- schedule your acupuncture session today.  Lori is offering $25 off an initial visit for private pay patients throughout December.

Another good flu season tip: Invest in Dr. Nenninger's Triple Flu Defense, an effective
natural remedy that can be taken weekly to ward off flu as well as to help reduce the duration and severity of symptoms such as fatigue, body aches, cough, fever, chills, nausea, vomiting and other flu-like symptoms.

Keeping the Holidays Healthy and Joyful
by Kelly Hoffman, HHC

We all suffer from holiday stress at times. It's such a busy season, it is hard not to escape the stress. Having some tools on hand throughout the coming weeks can really help ease all the tension and make the holidays healthier and more joyful.

First, let's talk about all that cooking and baking. Setting aside one or two days to do all the cooking and baking really helps. Freezing entrees and desserts and snacks ahead of time will save you from rushed and pressure-driven feelings.

Find a time throughout the day to take 5-10 minutes to meditate. Maybe while you are waiting for those dinners and treats to finish cooking. Keep a mat or towel near the kitchen so you can stretch or meditate while you wait. Breathing techniques have saved me in the most stressful of times. Good deep breathing instantly relaxes the sympathetic nervous system and releases tension. Put your hands on your belly and on an inhale, breathe in through your nose and feel your belly expand. Start with a count of three for the inhale and exhale. Eventually you should be able to work up to a count of 10-15. This type of breathing reduces stress immediately.

Adding foods like berries, bananas and carrots will give your body a boost of anti-oxidants and balance your electrolytes to keep you alert and able to tackle everything on your list.

Next, ask for help. I'm not good at doing this myself, but if you have people around you looking to lend a hand, take them up on it. Whether it's a carpool for your children, a friend offering to baby-sit for a day, someone to stir or chop something while you cook or someone to help decorating, let them help. Not only does it ease your stress, but it creates trust and respect among all of those involved.

Lastly, make sure to take time for yourself every day. A half hour in the morning or nighttime will keep your cortisol levels down and keep you healthier. Whether you choose to meditate during that time, read, watch TV, or just sit in the quiet, at least it is your time.

I am looking forward to going through these steps and more at my "Eating Healthy & Staying Stress-Free During the Holidays" workshop at New Life Wellness Center on Saturday, December 10 from 2-3pm . Take time for yourself and learn great stress management techniques to get through the busiest of times. I will also be bringing some healthy and simple treats and recipes for the holidays. See you there!
