Message From Our CEO:

Many people are looking for JOY in the holiday season. We at ONEgeneration are blessed to experience it daily. Moments of JOY string along to make up our days whether in our adult day care, childcare, our senior enrichment center or on the road visiting home bound seniors. Our joy comes from seeing the smile on the face of a senior when a child asks them for additional help on an art project. We experience the joy of a senior remembering the past while singing along with a visiting performer. We transcend the worries outside our walls when we dance along with the seniors at the Halloween Dance. We are inspired to see the endurance of seniors as they stay in step with the Zumba teacher for the whole class. Our hearts are filled with warmth when we see a senior waiting for our doors to open in the morning after taking two buses to get to our senior center to spend the day and to have a hot lunch. We are humbled to deliver meals to seniors who can no longer drive as they share their stories of life long achievements and heartbreak. We are enriched when we meet amazing partners in the community whose passion is to strive for excellence in senior healthcare and healthy and safe aging in place. We are honored to know the compassionate and loving caretakers who drive their loved ones to day care and who are ready to continue the care when they return home.

We are proud to be part of the ONEgeneration legacy and are so grateful to you, our sponsors who allow us to be here each day. Your donations whether monetary, pantry items, thrift store inventory or volunteer hours allow the work to go on and the moments of joy to continue. We at ONEgeneration wish you much JOY and peace in this holiday season.

Dr. David Stern's Expert Corner -
Dementia and Alzheimer's

Years ago, before I became a geriatrician, I visited my aunt and uncle in San Diego. On their kitchen counter, I saw more than twenty medicine bottles, some prescription, some over the counter herbals. These all belonged to my aunt. My uncle's pill bottles were in the cabinet above. I asked them to tell me what the pills were and what they were for. The response was spotty. As I reviewed them, I saw that some were redundant, some not needed at all.

I spend time with every new patient, reviewing each medication taken and making sure that each medication is appropriate. I call it "validating the medication regimen". The body changes as it ages: kidney function decreases, liver function decreases. The body's ability to cleanse itself of medication and toxins slows down. Older people often take several medications simultaneously and, as a result, the risk of drug interactions and adverse side effects increases. Additionally, there are specific problems for people with dementia. Certain medications, such as antihistamines and antispasmotics may damage cognition and may lead to acute onset of confusion.

Familiarity with the Beers Criteria, a list of potentially inappropriate medication for use in older adults, is essential when a doctor is treating elderly patients. After evaluating the medications the patient is taking, the doctor can consider adding new ones. Once it has been determined that the existing medications are appropriate, it is time to consider use of the medications that are FDA approved for the treatment of Alzheimer's dementia. There are still only two general classes of medication that have been approved. No medications will prevent or reverse the effects of Alzheimer's disease, but there are medications that may slow the rate of progressive memory loss. I will write, about them, and about other approaches to treatment, in my next article.

Dr. Stern

Dr. Stern serves as the Medical Director of ONEgeneration's Adult Day Healthcare Program. He reviews participant care plans and makes recommendations for enhanced care. If you have ideas for future article topics please contact ONEgeneration. Dr. Stern is available as needed for consultation on medical concerns.

Encino Farmers Market

December is a busy month for all of us, the holidays, the parties, the shopping but don't forget you can shop at the farmers market for a great selection of gifts and the freshest food you will find for your holiday tables while also supporting your local economy. Still in season are persimmons, pomegranates, and pears. Gene Etheridge of Etheridge Farms will have his famed organic Murcott Mandarins, and also my favorites, Mayer Lemons.

Sunday December 10th we will have a booth open from our Thrift Store with unique items.  100% of the proceeds from these previously owned items supports ONEgeneration's senior services.

Thanksgiving Meal Delivery!

This year 57 volunteers delivered hot turkey dinners with all the trimmings to 150 homebound seniors on Thanksgiving Day.

Thank you to all of the Board Members, families and community supporters that started their holiday morning off by delivering a hot holiday meal. After returning from their deliveries volunteers reported that so many of the frail older adults that lived alone were instantly cheered by the visit and were so appreciative of the company and special meal delivery.

ONEgeneration Senior Enrichment Center
Class of the Month

Beginning Tap and Jazz Wednesdays from 9 til 10 am with Instructor Lauren in MP3 is an amazing way to dance, have fun and stay moving! At the beginning of class every one warms up by doing some simple tap moves to get the feet, ankles and legs working. Next, the group went up on stage and started practicing a routine they are learning for the upcoming Christmas Show. They practice for about an hour and do it with beautiful smiles on their faces! If you want to dance and have fun, then I definitely recommend stopping by and dancing it up with these amazing ladies!

Senior Story of the Month

When Linda first had a stroke it meant she had to think about what she wanted to do with her life. She went into early retirement and found herself needing something more. Luckily, a friend of hers who attends ONEgeneration told her about it and Linda decided that she wanted to see this amazing place for herself.

Before coming here, Linda had rais
ed three beautiful children
and then had been an office manager of a Hallmark store in Northridge for 15 years!

Linda is at ONEgeneration all the time. She loves to keep busy so you can find her at activities like our "Rummykub", "Un-zip Your Lip", "Navigating Hope", "World Issues" or at a Writing Class. On top of her busy schedule, three times a month you will find her at different Poetry Reading in various libraries.
Linda is a down to
earth, sweet and caring woman so don't be afraid to go up and talk to her!
SHARE Project
Sending Help And Real Essentials

Our annual "adopt a senior" program has exceeded expectations this year.  It's truly heart warming to see how many new community members decided to join in this year and give to a senior in need.  Due to this overwhelming compassion and generosity we have given our 161 senior profiles to donors.  These donors have received a brief bio about their senior and a small list of suggested items that would help a low income senior live independently such as a new cane, batteries for their hearing aid or simple household items.

Thank you to the new companies and their employees that committed to helping this year including Planet Art, The Montage Hotel Beverly Hills, Clumeck Stern Schenkelberg & Getzoff and Yahoo!

Please see our January newsletter for photos and more information about this years wonderful SHARE Project.

Senior Center Master Class

L ast month we hosted a very special Master Class on Music at ONEgeneration's Senior Enrichment Center taught by Mezzo-Soprano Kellie Egging.  Our seniors learned healthy vocal production in singing and speaking and sang along to jazz favorites.

Updates in Childcare!

We are very excited to announce that childcare will be going through some exciting renovations! During the week of the Thanksgiving closure, bathrooms in the Butterfly, Roaring Lions, Sea Turtles, Busy Bees classrooms started renovations. We are very excited that are bathrooms will be equipped with automatic sinks and hand dryers. The bathrooms are receiving new flooring, fresh paint, new sinks and toilets.
We are also very elated that the laminate floors in the Dinosaurs and Dragons were replaced with hardwood flooring!
Additionally, we are also working on securing a vendor who will replace our artificial turf and rubber padding.
And finally, as we are expanding in numbers, and therefore, working on attaining a third bungalow! Please stay tuned for details.
