Dear Reader,
I spent some time on the Oregon coast last weekend. It was overcast, rainy, clear, and also beautiful and soothing. I hope everyone is finding ways to take care of themselves and each other. It's important.

Thanksgiving is next week! We have some adorable books for the kids all about the holiday so come and see.

Plaid Friday is in a week, it's the day after Thanksgiving and promotes shopping locally rather than at the big chains. The plaid stands for all the colors and stripes that make up our community and we're really happy to be part of it. Please come by, we'll have treats and we'll show you why it's a great thing to shop at an independent book store. Wait until you see the suggestions we have for the gift giving season!

Small Business Saturday is the next day and we have more fun in store. Please bring the kids from noon to 2 to meet folks from Know Yourself, a new Oakland publisher of really cool books for kids with science as the focus.  See below for more details, but really, get the kids in here and you won't be sorry. Plus you can do some shopping while they are mesmerized.

And for the adults we have a treat for you too! At 2 we will be featuring chef, instructor, cookbook author, and all around amazing person Linda Carucci in what we are calling The Chef is In. Do you have questions that you've always wanted to ask a chef? Looking for some tips to make entertaining less of a disaster? Just need to know how to make the next meal better? Drop by and ask her.

It's no secret that it's been a tough year in downtown Oakland for all of our businesses, so thank you for your continued support. Please bookmark www.laurelbookstore.com for when you want to order books online. Keep business here in Oakland for a healthier city!

Happy reading and take care of each other,
Luan

New and Noteworthy

The Terranauts by TC Boyle $26.99   It is 1994, and in the desert near Tillman, Arizona, forty miles from Tucson, a grand experiment involving the future of humanity is underway. As climate change threatens the earth, eight scientists, four men and four women dubbed the "Terranauts," have been selected to live under glass in E2, a prototype of a possible off-earth colony. Their sealed, three-acre compound comprises five biomes-rainforest, savanna, desert, ocean, and marsh-and enough wildlife, water, and vegetation to sustain them.
Closely monitored by an all-seeing Mission Control, this New Eden is the brainchild of ecovisionary Jeremiah Reed, aka G.C.-"God the Creator"-for whom the project is both an adventure in scientific discovery and a momentous publicity stunt. In addition to their roles as medics, farmers, biologists, and survivalists, his young, strapping Terranauts must impress watchful visitors and a skeptical media curious to see if E2's environment will somehow be compromised, forcing the Ecosphere's seal to be broken-and ending the mission in failure. As the Terranauts face increased scrutiny and a host of disasters, both natural and of their own making, their mantra: "Nothing in, nothing out," becomes a dangerously ferocious rallying cry.

The Gambler's Anatomy by Jonathan Lethem $27.95 Handsome, impeccably tuxedoed Bruno Alexander travels the world winning large sums of money from amateur "whales" who think they can challenge his peerless acumen at backgammon. Fronted by his pasty, vampiric manager, Edgar Falk, Bruno arrives in Berlin after a troubling run of bad luck in Singapore. Perhaps it was the chance encounter with his crass childhood acquaintance Keith Stolarsky and his smoldering girlfriend Tira Harpaz. Or perhaps it was the emergence of a blot that distorts his vision so he has to look at the board sideways.

The Snake by Ken Stabler $27.99 The first in-depth biography of one of the most talented and infamous legends to play in the National Football League-the life and times of pro football's first bad boy, famed Oakland Raiders quarterback Ken Stabler.
Ken "The Snake" Stabler was the embodiment of the original Men in Black-the freewheeling, hard-hitting Oakland Raiders. The league's first swashbuckling pass thrower, the mythical southpaw Southerner famous for come-from-behind drives late in the game, Stabler led the Raiders to their first Super Bowl championship in 1977. In an era dominated by gentleman quarterbacks like Roger Staubach and Bob Griese, this 1974 NFL MVP, four-time Pro-bowler, and Super Bowl champion was an iconoclast who partied as hard as he played and lived life unapologetically on his own-not the NFL's-terms.

Our Revolution by Bernie Sanders $27  Throughout the Presidential campaign, Bernie Sanders galvanized voters with his progressive platform and vision for America. In the book, Sanders shares experiences from the campaign trail and outlines his ideas for continuing a political revolution to fight for a progressive economic, environmental, racial and social justice agenda that creates jobs, raises wages, protects the environment and provides health care for all.

Mary Russell's War & Other Stories of Suspense by Laurie R. King $15.95
Laurie R. King illuminates the hidden corners of her beloved Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes series in this dynamic story collection.
In nine previously published short stories and one brand new, never-before-seen Sherlock Holmes mystery-available together for the first time-Laurie R. King blends her long-running brand of crime fiction with historical treats and narrative sleight of hand. At the heart of the collection is a prequel novella that begins with England's declaration of war in 1914. As told in Mary Russell's teenage diaries, the whip-smart girl investigates familial mysteries, tracks German spies through San Francisco, and generally delights with her extraordinary mind-until an unimaginable tragedy strikes.

Faithful by Alice Hoffman $26  What happens when a life is turned inside out? When love is something so distant it may as well be a star in the sky? Faithful is the story of a survivor, filled with emotion-from dark suffering to true happiness-a moving portrait of a young woman finding her way in the modern world. A fan of Chinese food, dogs, bookstores, and men she should stay away from, Shelby has to fight her way back to her own future. In New York City she finds a circle of lost and found souls-including an angel who's been watching over her ever since that fateful icy night.
