You are busy doing what you do best...running your business!

I understand. That is why I take this opportunity to share important information in a condensed manner for an easy and quick read.

It is also why we have committees that discuss issues and opportunities and take action.

One issue that may be on your radar, is SB 623, Water Quality, Safe and Affordable Drinking Water. No one can argue with the desired goal, but imposing a tax on water and creating another bureaucracy is not the best solution.

The Escondido Chamber is joining the voice of opposition with this letter, sent to
Honorable Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher, Chair, Assembly Appropriations Committee.

If you want to stay informed and be an active member of the Escondido Chamber, consider joining a committee. It is the best way to get a lot done in a short period of time.

Sincerely,

Rorie Johnston

Escondido Chamber of Commerce's Rising Stars!

girl-book-sm.jpg
The Escondido Chamber of Commerce has a long history of involvement with our youth, who will be the next business leaders, innovators and problem solvers. From the development of the MAP Program, guaranteeing admission to Cal State University San Marcos, to raising support for the PAL (Police Athletic League) who work hand in hand with at risk youth.

This Fall, we will be launching a new program, honoring High School students who serve the community called "Rising Star Student of the Month". Each month, a senior student who is chosen by their teacher, counselor or principal from the Escondido Union High School District will be honored and encouraged by their parents and the chamber at a breakfast event.  By April 2018, we will have honored 49 seniors.

We are reaching out to you to be a part of this program:
  • Swag bag items (total of 50)
  • Sponsor a Breakfast
  • Fund a scholarship (total of 7 scholarships awarded per year)

Scholarships will be presented to one student from each school, at the annual Grand Ave Festival on May 20, 2018. The scholarships awarded will depend on the amount of funding raised from people like you. It is our wish to provide a $1,000.00 scholarship to each of the seven students.

We would greatly appreciate your participation! The chamber is relying on the community to support this event, from breakfast sponsors to swag bag donations to funding the scholarships.
City Council Decision
 The Coast News: Brad Rollins

Escondido City Council majority voted Aug. 23 to move toward hiring a private company to manage and operate its public library.
Mayor Sam Abed was joined by councilmen John Masson and Ed Gallo in approving a motion that instructs city staff to negotiate contract terms with Library Systems & Services, a Rockville, Maryland-based company that manages nine library systems in the state including 36 branches in Riverside County.
In addition to saving the city about $400,000 a year in operating expenses - $2 million during the course of a five-year contract - outsourcing the library will improve services for residents, Abed said. The company says it will open the library an additional day, on Sundays, and commit to investing $250,000 a year in new materials.
"We have a good library but it can be better," the mayor told a chamber full of angry opponents. "We can make it better. If LS&S does not make it better, I will break the contract after one year. ... We will not let you down. We are going to protect the library. We are going to improve the library."

Paving on Hamilton Lane - as part of the construction for the Southwest Sewer Realignment Project will cause delays in the Felicita area.  The Southwest Sewer Realignment Project is near completion.  According to the City of Escondido: "Traffic delays should be anticipated within the Felicita area. Paving activities are scheduled between August 28 to September 1, 2017, for the following streets: Hamilton Lane, Bernardo Ave, Park Drive, north end of Felicita Road at Monticello, and the south end of Felicita Road at Via Rancho Parkway. The paving activities and sequences will vary for different streets. Motorists should anticipate one lane of traffic which will be controlled by Flagmen to allow alternating patterns for traffic flow. This project is part of the City of Escondido's Capital Improvements Program."  The paving activities will be from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday - Friday.
