"Now You Know"
Notes from the Historical Heritage Commission
|
With the aisle runners removed for summer, a brass memorial plate can be seen in the center aisle of the Nave. This brass cross on the floor marks the grave of Edward Eugene Ford, who was Rector of Saint Paul's Church from 1832-1862. Though the Reverend Ford resigned as Rector in 1861 due to his infirm health, the Vestry refused the resignation after 27 years of service, and voted to grant a two-year leave of absence with annual pay of $1,200. As the inscription on the plate notes, "Edward Eugene, Doctor in Divinity, For 30 Years Rector of St. Paul's Church, Faithful and Beloved." "Entered into the rest of paradise Christmas Eve MDCCCLXIII." His funeral was held on December 28, 1862; the original burial site was under the altar in the chancel of the 1820 church.
From The October 1918 Church Bells : "--The brass cross set in the floor over the grave of the Rev. Dr. Ford went through the fire but has been put in good condition and replaced in the floor of the aisle, though without the beautiful mosaic which formerly surrounded it." |

This year, two of Saint Paul's parishioners will be participating as featured "spirits" in the tour. William "Chip" Lamb will portray the Reverend William Henry Clarke (1820-1877), who was a widely beloved and respected Rector of Saint Paul's Church that served through the Civil War until his untimely death at the beside of a parishioner. He is buried in the crypt beneath the altar. Catherine Robertson will also portray her ancestor, Sarah Hudson Barnes (d. 1794), who was the wife of George Barnes, an Irish immigrant and wine merchant that served as a "Chairman of the Vestry" at Saint Paul's. The church is built over their graves.
