As we enter the holiday season, the month of November provides a number of special occasions to give thanks and demonstrate our gratitude. Today culminates the annual recognition of American Education Week, which is designed to celebrate public education and honor individuals who are making a difference in ensuring every child receives a quality education. Established by the National Education Association, this recognition has been celebrated for over nine decades. Thank you to our Lake Park educators and staff members who contribute every day and are committed to teaching and learning.

Furthermore, this week has provided an opportunity for Lake Park to thank our elected officials and provide recognition as "School Board Members Day" was celebrated statewide on Tuesday, November 15. This annual designation was created to thank the nearly 6,000 elected school board members in Illinois and build a stronger relationship between school board members and the community. Special thanks to Lake Park's Board of Education members who volunteer their time, serve with passion, demonstrate fiscal responsibility and model best practices of leadership.

Lancer Nation has also been very engaged in a number of initiatives that will directly impact families in our school community. Through the annual " Together Helping Others" fundraiser, Lake Park provides direct financial support through a trust account to our families in need. Students and staff have been generously contributing through direct donations and purchasing over 300 t-shirts and hoodies as well as treats at the campus bake sales. This fund is primarily utilized by the staff in our counseling offices to help students in need of items such as a winter coat, a new book bag, lunch coupons, the fee for a driver's permit, and more.

The Lancer Way committee organized a successful food drive this month, and the contributions were boxed and personally delivered by staff to 20 identified Lake Park families who will now have a meal for Thanksgiving. These families do not have enough money to pay for basic necessities that many of us take for granted each day. Our staff members believe that 20 is too many, and realistically, many more families have not yet been identified.

As always, I am proud of Lake Park's culture of generosity demonstrated by these acts of kindness. May the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday be a special time for you and your family!

The Illinois 5Essentials Survey site opened this week providing parents, students and teachers a unique opportunity to have a voice in improving their schools statewide. Driver Education Program Night
Lake Park High School's Second Semester Driver Education Program Night is intended for all parents and students who are currently scheduled for Second Semester Driver Education . The meeting will be hosted on Wednesday, November 30 in the East Campus Auditorium  at 7:00 p.m.

The evening provides a unique opportunity for the Driver Education Staff and parents to exchange ideas and gain a better understanding of the outstanding program.
  • Students will fill out and receive their permit applications, a Rules of the Road booklet, and information about what to expect when they take their written permit test, so that they may obtain their permit before the semester begins.
  • Information will be presented about the Graduated Licensing Law and the 50-Hour Requirement for students and parents to understand their responsibilities.
  • The practice-driving phase of our program relies heavily on parent cooperation and assistance. Parents will learn the logistics of the four-phase program and how students will be instructed and evaluated.
  • Families will receive a Parent-Teen Workbook, which is an excellent aid in helping the instructors help your child in driving.

Understandably, not everyone will be able to attend due to busy schedules. If you would like more information about the program or a copy of the Parent-Teen Workbook, contact Ralph Duke or visit the Driver Education website.
