October 20, 2017

We've got lots going on at UCCB this weekend!  Our amazing custodian, Lenny, will be waxing the floors on the first floor.  On Saturday, he'll be doing the foyer, so please avoid the building altogether that day.  If you must get in, use the back door by the offices to access the Vestry and the front stairs to get to the second floor.  On Sunday, Lenny will be doing the floors in the Boxborough Children Center, so all their equipment will be in the Vestry.  Unfortunately this leaves us without Nursery space this Sunday, but we'd love to have our little friends in worship.

Sunday morning we'll have worship and Spiritual Nurture for elementary and middle school youth as usual, and the foyer will be available for use.  And then at 5 pm our first Faith and Food For One And All!  Please see below for more information.

See you Sunday!

Peace,

Rev. Cindy

Worship
Sunday, October 22, 9:30 am

This Sunday, pack lightly.  On our "journey with Jesus"
we've got some specific instructions about what to bring,
and what to do.  As we begin our fall Generosity campaign,
let's look at the challenge he's set for us.  The junior choir will lead the way with their song!

Spiritual Nurture

While there is no nursery care this Sunday due to floor cleaning, we'd love to have our youngest friends in worship!  At the second hymn, elementary youth will leave for Spiritual Nurture in the Pipe Room, and middle schoolers on up will head to the Fellowship Hall.

Faith & Food for One and All
All Families, All Ages & All Sizes

Sunday October 22nd at 5pm

Come one, come all.
Come giant, come small.
Come green, come blue.
Come familiar, come new.
Come early, come late.

We want to meet you and share a plate!
Spiritual Nurture is trying something new!  "Faith and Food for All" is an alternative to traditional Sunday School.  We will share a meal, enjoy fellowship time and then Pastor Cindy will share some fun faith practices families can try at home.  Join us and bring your friends and neighbors.

You don't need to do anything except show up with a hungry belly and an open heart.
Join us in the Gathering Room at 5 pm on Sunday October 22nd for faith and food and fun. To RSVP or for more information, please contact Art Boyd: [email protected]
Pie Social

On Sunday, October 29, Fellowship will host their annual Pie Social & Sale. Home-made pies donated by members of the church community will be available for sale by the slice or as whole pies. Consider buying one and freezing it for Thanksgiving! Mini pies, just right for smaller families, were very popular last year and will be available again this year.

If you're interested in contributing a pie, please see the sign-up sheet at the Fellowship Table in the Gathering Room or contact Deb Simmons at 978-365-9711 or [email protected]. Proceeds from the sale will be used to support the Fellowship Ministry Team's activities.

G. Ernest Fournier Youth Mission Trip Fund

Many, many thanks to everyone who was able to attend the celebration of Ernie's life last Friday.  It was wonderful to have so many folks from UCCB there, including Mission Trip alums who traveled considerable distances to be there.  The family poured over the guest book:  it meant so much to read those names.

People have asked what the family is suggesting for donations in Ernie's name. Reflecting Ernie's love for youth, adventure and the outdoors, the family listed three suggestions:  UCC Boxborough for the G. Ernest Fournier Youth Mission Trip Fund, American Forests in Washington, D.C. or to the charity of your choice.

The G. Ernest Fournier Youth Mission Trip Fund will be held at UCCB and is intended to help offset the overall cost of each year's trip, so that every participant will be touched by Ernie's spirit.  If you would like to make a donation to that fund, you can send a check to UCCB with a reference to the fund in the memo line, or you can use our online giving portal, where the fund is listed under "Boxborough offerings".  Just click "Donate" on this link and you'll be directed to the secure giving page: http://www.boxboroughucc.org/our-ministries/giving/give-online/
If you have any questions, please contact Rev. Cindy

Silent Auction

Get in the Christmas spirit early by giving an item or a service to the Silent Auction at the Merrie Christmas Fair! We welcome donations of all kinds: gifts you purchase, gifts that are hand-made, Christmas-themed items, tickets to sports events or concerts, collectibles, etc.

Some of the most popular items for bid are the services that we provide for one another. Here's a partial list of what has done well in the past:
  • Use of vacation home
  • Pie-of-the-month
  • Carpentry services
  • Special meals that you prepare
  • Hikes on trails led by experienced hikers

We also gladly accept money to buy articles for the Auction. Send or bring your check to the church made out to "UCCB" with "Silent Auction" in the memo line. You can also donate online through the church website ( www.boxboroughucc.org ). Access the pull-down menu "Giving" at the top of the home page, then click on Give Online, then click Donate, then choose Special Fundraiser (specifying "Silent Auction" next to the amount).

The Silent Auction needs everyone's participation to be successful so please let us know what you can give. Sign up on the Silent Auction poster in the Gathering Room during the coffee hour or contact Mary Anne Vogel (978-263-8957 or [email protected] ) or Jennifer Royce (978-263-0707 or [email protected] ).

Items for the Silent Auction need to be identified by the end of October so they can be listed in the Auction Booklet. Thank you so much!

Below is the schedule of Ornament Table workshops that we have planned so far.  We are hosting a variety of dates and times this year to make it easier for some folks to attend. Hope you can join us for one (or all). Of course items can be made at home as well.

More dates planned at the beginning of November.

Welcome Jenn!

Please welcome Jenn LaCross, our temporary administrative assistant.  She's getting up to speed on our publications, calendar, Quickbooks, filing system and building use!  It's a lot to take in, but I know everyone will be patient and supportive.  Jenn herself has
shown great patience and support in the chaos of the last few weeks.  We're so glad to have her with us.  Welcome, Jenn!

attice treasure
Remember Your Attic Treasures!

Instead of having a yard sale this year, why not donate your unwanted items to Attic Treasures for this year's Merrie Christmas Faire?  Let's repeat our success of last year!

We can only accept goods that are in clean, working condition and free of mold or mildew. Household goods, kitchen ware, small appliances, electronics, toys, games, sporting goods, linens, office supplies & equipment, tools, and luggage are all welcome.
Some of the things we cannot take include clothing, shoes, curtain hardware, used pet items, and medical equipment.

Unfortunately, we are not able to take or store any items in advance this year.

Drop off is in the UCCB Vestry beginning Sunday, Nov 13 and throughout the week leading up to the fair. Please get your donations to us by Friday, Nov 18, 12:00 noon.

Any gasoline powered equipment or other items that give off fumes must be left outside, near the back door of Fellowship Hall.

We will need lots of volunteers to help us with table set-up on Thursday @4:00 and on Friday to help with sorting and arranging. If you have any questions, please call Gregg Hamlin at 978-855-0460.

We look forward to receiving your Treasures!

Family Folk Chorale sings James Taylor Songs
Sunday, Nov. 12th, 3 pm, Arlington Town Hall
A highlight of my summer was going to the James Taylor/Bonnie Raitt concert at Fenway.
It was a beautiful summer night, I knew the words to every song, the love in the stadium
made everything and every-one glow. Literally! I was filled with joy, floated out of the stadium and the joy carried me for days. It won't be Fenway, but we will do our best to recreate the joy, and the love.
Come sing-along with us (Channing & I are singing in this intergenerational chorus, and Taylor is on trumpet for one or two numbers) I have $12
tickets ($15 at the door).  Andy Migner 978-635-9883/[email protected]
Think Globally, Act Locally:  Bringing it home
Maynard Fine Arts Theater is hosting a free public event on Wednesday, October 25th featuring Al Gore's new film on global warming. The theme for the evening is "think globally, act locally: bringing it home".  The event begins at 6:30 pm with a 30 minute panel conversation about simple things we can all do on a local and personal level to help undo or lesson global warming.  The panel will feature two perspectives: Jill Appel, who helped lead Concord in becoming the first U.S. town to ban single-serve plastic bottles, will share some of the successful steps she and her family have taken to reduce their own energy and water use; and Rochelle Lerner, faculty advisor to Maynard High School Green team, and the student member of that group will discuss their work. The audience will have an opportunity of questions and will receive handouts with additional ideas for individual action.

An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power will begin at 7:00 PM. Al Gore's 2006 film, An Inconvenient Truth, highlighted the global climate crisis, and his new film illustrates how close we are coming to an energy revolution.

Members of UCCB's Green Team are planning to attend.  Please contact Kellie Senghas with any questions, [email protected].

ALL SAINTS SERVICE NOV. 5

On Nov. 5 we will remember the saints who have blessed us - family, friends, congregation members who have died but left a mark on our hearts.  We will lift up names in worship; please pass along any names you would like lifted up to Rev. Cindy.  You are also invited to bring a memento with you to place on the altar.  It could be a photo of one of your "saints", or something that reminds you of them.  Don't worry, you won't have to speak in public, and you can take your object home that day.  We just want to feel the saints with us in our sanctuary.
