Cohousing: A Solution for Loneliness and Social Isolation
Nevada City Cohousing
Humans are naturally social, but modern living may be reducing the quality of our social relationships and increasing our social isolation. Recent census data show that more and more Americans are living alone, marrying less, and having fewer children.

Research has also shown that loneliness is a serious health risk (for example, see this recent APA story that says “loneliness and social isolation may represent a greater public health hazard than obesity”).

Cohousing offers a solution to isolation and loneliness with many upsides: a community of support and trust, shared meals and experiences, tight bonds and deep conversations, and even improved mental and physical health. Members determine their own balance of privacy and social interaction, creating the community living experience they want.

Members of Fair Oaks EcoHousing value our social connections and interdependence, and we’re building our own intentional village to meet our social and emotional needs.

To read more about the upsides of cohousing, see this recent Big Think article: “Cohousing Could Help Solve Some of the World’s Most Pressing Problems.”

News from our Members
Theatre Outing - Marty
On July 21st, several of us from Fair Oaks EcoHousing had a lovely dinner at the Fair Oaks Brew Pub, followed by pleasant evening outdoors at the Fair Oaks Theatre Festival, watching an imaginative production of Reefer Madness. We are looking forward to attending the next production, Shrew!

Concert Outing - Al
The Tom Rigney Festival at the Fair Oaks Village Park was a blast. There were 5 of us from FOEH, Marty, Gina, Alan, Michelle, and Al. It was every bit as good as last year. Unfortunately we were so busy dancing that we didn't take pictures. I can't wait till next year. The place was packed.

Visiting the Bard - Kathy
I escaped the summer heat with a group of friends in a trip to Ashland, OR to spend a long weekend at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. There is nothing like seeing 5 shows in 3 days of just incredible acting and design, interspersed with meals in bucolic settings along the Ashland Creek and Lithia Park overseen by the Siskiyou mountains. What a way to decompress!

Having fun in Croatia - Marty
Subhash and I took a tour of Croatia in June, which also included brief visits to Bosnia & Montenegro. Afterwards, we went to Italy, the region of Chianti, for a family wedding. Both legs of the trip were wonderful -- great sights, delicious food, friendly people.

Traveling in Europe - Anne
This June, I spent ten days in Germany and then went on a Rick Steve's "Best of Eastern Europe" tour with my two daughters, Sarah and Holly, and my oldest granddaughter, Shiloh. Every country was beautiful, but Croatia's Plitvice National Park was an outdoor lover's dream. I honestly can't wait to start traveling with some fellow co-housers, too. I plan to be one of those senior citizens who keeps moving for as long as possible.

Many Adventures - Karen
In the last year I've traveled to New York City with a friend to see some great theater and to my sister's home in Oregon to view the total solar eclipse. I'm looking forward to an October trip to Europe for a two week river cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest and hope that my new co-housing neighbors will be be able to join me on future trips like these and get me motivated to camp and kayak right here in northern California.
