Six thousand students at 45 elementary schools across Palm Beach County are looking sharp this school year, after they each received two new school uniforms thanks to the generosity of Back to Basics, a Wellington-based organization with the mission of giving children the confidence to learn by providing new shirts and shorts at the start of the school year.
The process begins each spring, when founder Beverly Perham and her volunteers reach out to schools - many of which have up to 95 percent of students on free and reduced lunch - and ask them to identify children who could use a fresh set of clothes when the school year starts.
Then, in the heat of the summer, $70,000 worth of uniforms, in 690 boxes on 15 pallets weighing 12,000 pounds, is unloaded at the organization's warehouse. Then volunteers get busy sorting the clothes that will be picked up by each school for distribution.
