The northern entrance to Palm Beach has gotten a face-lift. It was nearly five years ago that work began to build a new Flagler Memorial Bridge, kicking off a series of seasons featuring ugly construction, bad traffic and foundering area businesses. The historic Royal Poinciana Plaza stayed open but didn't flourish.

On a normal day, the view from Palm Beach's Lake Trail consists of yachts, speedboats and sailboats, but this week, walkers and runners on the trail saw something unusual floating down the Intracoastal Waterway: an estimated 200-year-old tree strapped to a barge.

This season, finances, sand and utilities will be in Palm Beach's spotlight. The town will review all of its operations with an eye toward cutting expenses - an exhaustive and time-consuming process that Town Manager Tom Bradford will outline in November.

Residents Don't Have to Wait for Palm Beach to Bury Their Utilities
Undergrounding
The town is making allowances for property owners who want to bury their utilities without waiting for the town-wide undergrounding initiative to arrive at their doorstep. The town-wide project began this summer, with Phase 1 in the South End and far North End.
Palm Beach Council Says No to Fiber Optic Conduit

Hopes for an eventual fiber optic, high-speed communications system in town are stalling. Town Manager Tom Bradford and other officials have said the island-wide burial of utilities presents a chance to lay conduit for a future fiber optic cable installation at the lowest possible cost.
