"Greaseball, greaseball, greaseball. That's all I threw Rod Carew and he still hits them. He's the only player in baseball who consistently hit my grease. He sees the ball so well,

I guess he can pick out the dry side."

 NBA Sports Quiz

Question: On May 30, the Miami Heat eliminated the Indiana Pacers and made it to the NBA finals for the fourth straight year. Only two other teams in NBA history have done this. Who are they?

Answer: The Los Angeles Lakers with coach Pat Riley reached the finals in 1982, '83, '84 and '85. The Lakers split two series with the Philadelphia 76ers and Julius Erving, and split two series with the Boston Celtics and Larry Bird.

The other team to do it was Boston under coach Red Auerbach. They reached the finals a record eight straight seasons from 1959 to '66 and won them all. During the 13 seasons Bill Russell was their center, from 1956 to '69, the Celtics won 11 championships.

The above question was submitted by Nick Curran, the NBA's director of public relations, 1969-76. A full account of the Golden State Warriors' winning the 1975 NBA championship, contributed by Curran, will appear shortly in the new Baseball edition of the Ultimate Sports Guide.

Memorable Sports Moment

Giants and Mets

... and Bing

Bay Area Sportscaster

One of my favorite sports memories is a game I attended at Candlestick Park with my family back in the fall of 1966. The Giants and Dodgers were in the midst of another tight pennant race, and on a cool, gray Sunday afternoon in mid-September, the Giants were hosting the lowly New York Mets.

Willie McCovey was in his prime at 28 and Willie Mays was still a force, having just come off an MVP season the previous year. The Giants' pitching staff featured ace Juan Marichal and spitball specialist Gaylord Perry, who won 12 of his first 13 decisions and ended the season with the first 20-win campaign of his long career.

Late in the game the Giants were trailing by a run, even though McCovey had blasted a pair of homers. With one out and none on, Jimmy Ray Hart, who normally started at third base, stepped to the plate as a pinch hitter. Hart's shoulder had been bothering him and San Francisco manager Herman Franks had wanted to give him a few days off. But the Giants needed a jolt, and longtime Giants beat writer Bob Stevens of the San Francisco Chronicle had said of Hart, "He hits balls over buildings!" Sure enough, he hammered a line-drive game-tying homer just inside the left-field foul pole at Candlestick and sent the crowd of nearly 30,000 into a frenzy.

The game then went spinning into extra innings. In the top of the 10th inning, a little-known journeyman outfielder named Al Luplow of the Mets smacked his second homer of the day, a two-run shot to put New York back in front by two runs.

In the bottom of the 10th, with two on and one out, up stepped McCovey again, and the crowd was on its feet in anticipation of fireworks. The fans didn't have to wait long as "Stretch" uncoiled that powerful swing of his and slammed a long, high drive that soared over the right-field bleachers for a game-winning three-run homer.

It is a great memory and as my dad, mom, brother, sister and I were leaving, we had another interesting experience. We almost walked right into Bing Crosby, who was a big baseball fan and who, like the rest of us, was walking through the crowd to his car.

The above Memorable Sports Moment was submitted by sportscaster Bruce Macgowan. Macgowan will appear shortly in the new Baseball edition of the Ultimate Sports Guide with reports on both the San Francisco Giants and Stanford Cardinal.
