Administrative
Leadership Program (ALP)
|
What is the Administrative Leadership Program (ALP)?
CCCOE-ALP is approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing as a Professional Preparation Program for the Clear Administrative Services Credential (formerly referred to as the Tier II Professional Clear Administrative Services Credential). In partnership with the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA), CCCOE-ALP provides high-quality, researched-based professional learning and development for new leaders. Credential candidates expand and deepen their leadership knowledge, skills, and behaviors through individualized, job-embedded induction.
Program highlights include:
- One-on-one coaching by an experienced administrator
- Assisting and supporting participants in their administrative roles
- Advancing the knowledge and skills of participants in relation to the California Professional Standards for Educational Leaders (CPSELs)
- Helping administrators lead, reflect, and grow capacity
- Candidates complete a portfolio based on an Individual Induction Plan, setting goals and outlining their experiences and growth as new leaders. Upon completion of the two-year program, candidates will be recommended for the Clear Administrative Services Credential.

Developing Academic Language through Oral Discourse:
|
This four-part professional learning series will use history and science content to provide district teams' tools and strategies to plan instruction for English Learners (EL). Participants will be provided with tools to lead their departments, sites, and district to implement language development strategies from the California History-Social Science Framework (adopted July of 2016) and Science Framework (adopted November 2016). The workshops will include model lessons that use content to develop language and incorporate academic discourse. Participants will then develop their standards-based instructional materials for developing academic language for all students. Over the course of the series, participants will explore the role of language in the content areas and develop a structure to provide all students access to demanding curriculum.

Vape Pens & Teens - What Educators Need to Know
|
E-cigarettes, vape pens, e-hookah... whatever you call them, these products have grown in popularity among young people. This presentation will provide an overview of e-cigarettes/vape pens, adolescent use, tobacco-free schools policies, prevention strategies, and resources. TUPE coordinators, administrators, teachers, counselors, school security staff, and community-based-organization people should attend.This training is provided by the Contra Costa County Tobacco Use Prevention Education (TUPE) Program.

Number Talks with Dr. Cathy Humphreys

Are you interested in recharging your Number Talks knowledge? Do you have any burning questions of the authors of Number Talks? Let's take our Number Talks to the next level! AC3ME and CCCOE are teaming up to host a mini Number Talks Seminar and Q and A Session with Dr. Cathy Humphreys! Dr. Humphreys is the co-author with Ruth Parker of Number Talks Matter. She has also co-authored Connecting Mathematical Ideas with Jo Boaler.

Computer Science for Elementary TK-6
|
As a Regional Partner with Code.org, the CCCOE is hosting a one-day workshop for K-5 educators interested in teaching computer science. This workshop will cover Code.org's CS Fundamentals courses A-F.
Code.org's elementary school curriculum allows event the youngest students to explore the limitless world of computing. Courses blend online, self-guided and self-paced tutorials with "unplugged" classroom activities that require no computer.
Participants will receive:
- In-person instruction from an experienced computer science facilitator
- Intro to computer science and pedagogy
- Overview of the online curriculum and teacher dashboard
- Printed curriculum guide containing course lesson plans
- Strategies for teaching "unplugged" classroom activities
- Bag of Code.org swag

Conference: Welcoming Schools & Communities Summit/Rainbow High
|
This annual event is focused on creating safe and affirming spaces for LGBTQ+ youth. Hosted by the Contra Costa Inclusive Schools Coalition, Mt. Diablo Unified School District, and the Rainbow Community Center.
The Summit invites educators/teachers, faith community members, service providers, healthcare providers, parents, guardians, and youth (ages 11-25) to attend.

Being Generationally Savvy: Working Effectively With All Generations
|
Have you noticed your newer employees feel and look and act differently than novice colleagues you remember? Are you hearing of communication challenges between colleagues of different ages? Are you becoming aware more employees want a life-work balance vs. a work-life balance? Generational factors might be coming into play. Who are these four generations in our workplaces? What are their strengths and needs? What structures and communication protocols should we design to work well with them all? And, what knowledge do we need to help every group thrive? Using Jennifer's book, The Multigenerational Workplace: Communicate, Collaborate and Create Community, this workshop will provide tools and resources on this increasingly intriguing topic.

CCCOE Distinguished Speaker Series:
Creating a Student Centered Classroom
|
During this workshop, attendees will engage in understanding how to create a classroom culture of learning that is student centered. We will work together to build a definition of learning so participants understand the changing needs of today's modern learners (the why) and look at how authentic and relevant learning experiences can be personalized and integrated within traditional curriculum and classroom constraints. We will also help teachers develop a plan that incorporates culture building and leads to a learning environment that supports managing collaborative and student centered experiences (the how).

Workshop: Human Trafficking & Commercial Exploitation of Children
|
Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery and a fundamental violation of a person's human rights. Given the trafficking trends throughout the world, we know that the East Bay region, and more specifically Contra Costa County, is not immune to the plight of trafficked and exploited persons. School administrators, teachers, counselors, school security staff, and community-based organization folks are invited to learn more about this problem. This training is provided by the Contra Costa County Tobacco Use Prevention Education (TUPE) Program.

Number Talks support implementation of the California Standards in Mathematics (CCCSS). Participants engage in discourse, conversations, and alternative thinking in mathematics.This workshop is framed around the Number Talks book, written by Sherry Parrish. The book contains more than 850 purposefully designed number talks and a DVD featuring 19 Number Talks filmed in actual classrooms. These resources are included in the price of the workshop.

CCCOE Distinguished Speaker Series:
Teaching Earth Systems and Building Design using STEAM with Ladie Malek
|
Earth Systems can be taught as a very interdisciplinary unit, incorporating everything from geology, paleontology, and oceanography to structural engineering, architecture, and business planning.
Participants in this workshop will explore phenomenon-based curriculum design and story line development. Ladie Malek will take participants through the 5E lesson structure for guided inquiry using earth science mysteries. Participants will learn about some of the processes that shape our planet while exploring NGSS units, including a STEAM engineering project. Content will be focused on Middle School NGSS Standards, but the pedagogy is adapted to all grades.

This two-day conference features keynote speakers and workshops that will engage and inspire anyone who works in the areas of health, mental health, nursing, alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, positive youth development, peer education, restorative justice/practices, PBIS/MTSS, social justice, school safety and response, inclusive schools, and bullying prevention.

What's in a Number? Exploring Mathematics Conceptually

During this one-day workshop, participants will explore and experience mathematics conceptually, while building a deeper understanding of how math works. We will begin our journey in the number system through the understanding of numbers and operations and make connections to algebraic thinking and progressions through the grade levels. Participants will have an opportunity to collaborate with peers on shifts in teaching and learning through the implementation of the Common Core State Standards.

Introduction to the CA History-Social Science Framework
|
UC Berkeley History-Social Science Project (UCBHSSP) will introduce participants to the new History-Social Science framework, which was adopted in July 2016. A central aspect of both efforts is to support teaches in developing inquiry-driven courses that integrate the H-SS Standards (content and historical analysis) and Common Core Standards for Literacy in History, while integrating ELD instructional models. UCBHSSP staff will provide a one-day orientation to the History-Social Science Framework, based on their vast experience working with teachers on integrating new approaches to learning. This program is designed for administrators, coaches, teachers, and paraprofessionals
participating teachers will be introduced to:
- Major shifts in history-social science instruction as is outlned by the frameworks
- Ways to revise existing courses so they align
- Examples of Best Practices and Examples in Instruction.

Training: Brief Intervention for Substance-Using Adolescents
|
Short-term counseling intervention that consists of two to four sessions aimed at adolescents who use alcohol, tobacco, and/or other drugs. The program is geared towards TUPE coordinators, administrators, teachers, counselors, school security staff, and community-based-organization representatives.
This training is provided by the Contra Costa County
Tobacco Use Prevention Education (

Despite fewer teens smoking than ever before, tobacco is still a major health issue and it affects some communities a lot more than others. Explore the tobacco industry targeting of the African American community, health disparities, and prevention strategies. The Saint Mary's College 2017-2018 Distinguished Speaker Series

For the past 23 years, the Distinguished Speaker Series has attracted more than 1,000 educators each year from 5 local counties and more than 30 regional school districts. Internationally renowned speakers, authors, and consultants have been inspiring participants to make a difference in their classroom, school and, community.

R4 Empowering Educator Program
|
Empowering Educators is a free professional development program for those who work with students in alternative, court, community, and continuation schools. It is ultimately meant to support the social and emotional health of the adults working with our most challenged youth. Participants will explore:
- Practices of adult self-care when working with trauma-informed youth
- Working within a strengths-based paradigm of teaching and learning
- Developing a culture of emotional intelligence and mental hygiene for students so they are ready for work-based learning and post-secondary education
- Basic understanding of trauma-informed care and executive brain functioning
- Processes of transformative facilitation
- How to build community networks centered around vision to action planning

Contra Costa County Model UN
|
The Contra Costa County Model United Nations program is an exciting, educational way for high school students to learn about global issues. The Model UN simulates the activities of a UN body such as the Security Council or the General Assembly. Students assume the roles of diplomatic representatives to the UN as they consider contemporary international concerns. Through this role-playing event, students develop a greater understanding of world problems and the complexity of international relations. All Bay Area schools are welcome to submit a Model UN team. #cocomun

Mt. Diablo Astronomical Society
|
| The Mt. Diablo Astronomical Society will gladly organize an astronomy night for your school, youth group, or community organization. The organization's members volunteer their time and their telescopes to bring the universe to you. They also provide knowledgeable speakers and activities on various astronomy topics, either in a classroom or in a meeting setting.

13th Annual Shelter-in-Place Day
|
Put this date on your calendar today! Community Awareness Emergency Response (CAER) invites all schools to practice and improve their site emergency procedures for shelter-in-place by taking part in this 11th annual county-wide exercise. Guidelines for this program will be sent out to all districts and school principals later this summer (reminder post cards have recently been mailed out). Schools can use the time for training, running brief drills, or conducting more detailed emergency exercises.

2017 California STEAM Symposium
|
The 2017 California STEAM Symposium (formerly the STEM Symposium) convenes nearly 3,000 educators from across California to catalyze improved STEAM instruction for all students. The California STEAM Symposium provides educators with opportunities for ongoing rigorous, high-quality, collaborative, and inspiring professional learning and resources. The conference also showcases innovative approaches to teaching and learning happening throughout the state.

2017 Expand Your Horizons STEM Conference

Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) is a conference specially designed for middle school girls in the Central Contra Costa County area.
Conference goals:
- To increase the interest of young women in mathematics, science, and technology through positive, hands-on experiences
- To foster awareness of career opportunities in math, science, and technology-related careers
- To provide young women with opportunities to meet and interact with positive role models who are active in math, science, and technology-related careers

Seventh Annual Bay Area Science Festival

More than 200 science, technology, and engineering organizations from across the Bay Area will present the fun and excitement of science, through hands-on and interactive exhibits, science-themed performances and demonstrations, and family-oriented entertainment.

Safeway funds grant applications for communities where stores are located. Grants should focus on Safeway's priorities, including education. Dow Chemical Company Community Advisory Panel (CAP) Grant Program
|
The DOW CAP Grant Program is currently accepting online applications. Eligible applicants must represent community non-profit organizations, schools, municipalities, or county governmental agencies/departments that have identified science, education or environmental projects that will enhance the quality of life within East Contra Costa County. The National Science Teachers Association offers 19 different awards that recognize teachers for their development and implementation of unique science programs and curricula, outstanding leadership and dedication to the profession. The NSTA awards offer recognition and a multitude of prizes for educators. Prizes include cash awards and grants, school supplies and materials, and trips to our national conferences. 33rd Annual California Coastal Cleanup Day
|
|
Every year, on the third Saturday in September, people join together at sites all over California to take part in the State's largest volunteer event, California Coastal Cleanup Day. In 2016, more than 68,000 volunteers removed nearly 1,143,000 pounds of trash and recyclables from California's beaches, lakes, and waterways. Families, friends, coworkers, scout troops, school groups, service clubs, and individuals come together to celebrate and share their appreciation of California's fabulous coast and waterways. The event is part of the International Coastal Cleanup, organized by the Ocean Conservancy, which is the largest volunteer event on the planet!

A 2005 act of Congress states that all educational institutions receiving federal funding must observe September 17 as Constitution Day, which celebrates the 1787 signing of our founding document. According to the guidelines put forth by the Department of Education, teachers and schools are free to design Constitution Day programming that best addresses the needs of their students.

Contra Costa Community Warning System

The Contra Costa County Community Warning System (CWS) is a comprehensive system designed to alert the public in the county of imminent threats to life or health. The system was developed by the Community Awareness and Emergency Response organization (CAER) and is operated by the Office of the Sheriff.
The CWS mission is to alert the public of imminent threats to life or health, inform the public of basic hazard information and guide them to resources to gather more detailed information.
The CWS uses a variety of tools to reach the public as quickly and reliably as possible such as:
- Telephone notification (cell and landline)
- Email
- Texting
- Social Media (Facebook and Twitter)
- Sirens
- Radio and TV
- NOAA Weather Radios
- Cable Television
