August E-News
Welcome Jen, Heartland's New Executive Director!

Jen Korz started as Heartland's Executive Director on Monday, August 28th! All of Heartland's staff, volunteers and animals are looking forward to working with her! Here's a sneak peek into her first day on the job...

My heart is overflowing from the kind welcome notes and flowers, to watching the turkeys trot towards dinner, to getting preened by Mister the goose (it was a love bite, right?), to catching Bert the sheep taking an afternoon nap (was he counting himself?), to watching Winnie the pig delight in her salad, to Michael the goat rolling ov er for belly scratches---what a magical place.

I watched with admiration as the dedicated staff and volunteers got drenched while rushing the birds inside during yesterday's downpour. In an instant, I saw caring people carrying birds. Needless to say, I am looking forward to working with this dynamic team.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention that I also saw the places that need repair, and the holes, and the myriad of things that need fixing up. But in those, I also recognized the effort that has ALREADY gone into keeping our beloved farm in the good shape it is! Maintenance is a noble and necessary part of what we do to create an environment--to create a sanctuary--for our animal friends.

Lastly, I can't help but be excited by the possibilities and incredible potential we have, both as a facility and a mission-driven organization.

Heartland, I am SO glad to be here. We have work to do--but hope abounds. I look forward to working together with you.

With gratitude,
Jen Korz

Fall Camp: Extremely limited spots left! Sign up today!

We currently have TWO spots left for our upcoming Fall Camp! Fall Camp is a weekly program that starts on Saturday, September 16th and runs through Saturday, November 4th (9 AM - 4 PM). Tuition is $420 per camper.

Fall Camp activities include animal care and barn chores, hikes in our apple orchard, crafts (including making decorations for our Barn Dance) and lots of quality time interacting with our rescued farm animals. This is a much smaller group than our summer camp and provides a more personal, one-on-one experience!

If you're interested, ACT NOW and email our Camp Director, Sunshine, at [email protected]!
New arrivals: Welcome to the barn Hugs, Thunder & Lightning!

Hugs is a senior female goat (she's about 11 years old) who came to Heartland earlier this month. Sadly, her sister passed away and she was living without any other companions and was extremely lonely. When Hugs first arrived she was terrified of everything. We're happy to report that she's showing us more and more of her sassiness every day. She makes all of us laugh (especially when she plays peek-a-boo!) and truly has a personality much bigger than her tiny frame! Do you want to be her first sponsor?

Thunder & Lightning are approximately 12 years old and are fainting goats. They arrived at Heartland shortly after Hugs.

The boys' original owners passed away, and caring for them fell to their daughter, who was already caring for her two handicapped siblings. Thunder & Lightning are both overweight (we are working on that!) and they were kept in a pen withou t much room to roam because they kept wandering over to the neighbor's garage to eat whatever they could find (junk mail and cardboard were favorites).

Now that the boys are at Heartland, we'll be focusing on getting them healthy, managing their pain (both have arthritis) and letting them enjoy the good life - lots of fresh hay and sunshine (and no more junk mail!)

Please consider sponsoring Thunder or Lightning with your monthly donation - these boys are so sweet and silly!
Heartland thanks you!
August Volunteer of the Month: David Landre
David started volunteering on animal care shifts at the beginning of this year but his commitment to and love of Heartland makes it seem like he's been at HFS much longer! In addition to his two animal care shifts per week, David helps our Shelter Director with inventory, coordinates volunteers to pick up supplies and is always willing to do extra jobs (the work at the farm never ends!) His positive attitude and fantastic work ethic make him one heck of a volunteer! Thank you so much for everything you do for us, David!
August's Volunteer Information Session
