"What is both surprising and delightful is that spectators are allowed, and even expected, to join in the vocal part of the game ... There is no reason why the field should not try to put the batsman off his stroke at the critical moment by neatly timed disparagements of his wife's fidelity

and his mother's respectability."

Memorable Sports Moment
Ed Jay - Roller Derby team

Bay Bombers 2.0

--Jim Fitzpatrick

Skating for the San Francisco Bay Bombers roller derby team was a dream and goal of mine starting in the third grade. Years later I was blessed to have the opportunity to fulfill that dream--until shoulder woes brought my playing career to an end far too soon.

Still wanting to take an active part in the sport, I sought a new career path: I became a league referee. Sadly, a number of years later the league disbanded due to internal fighting among the owners. Once again I was faced with a difficult challenge and moved on to another occupation.

To be honest, I really missed being a part of the sport I'd loved since I was a kid, but what I missed the most was being a member of the Bombers. Once in a while an amazing opportunity comes along, and it sure did for me!

Seven years ago, pro roller derby was brought back, and the San Francisco Bay Bombers were revived. Early on I assisted in training new talent, but after the team's general manager made an unexpected departure, I was offered the position. My last game with the team prior to retiring due to shoulder injuries was in 1984. Now, 23 years later, I not only was reunited with my team but was the GM.

Our first game on April 28, 2007, was held at the Bombers' old home base, historic Kezar Pavilion by Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, and it has to be one of the most unforgettable moments in my life. That night the building was packed with longtime fans, just like the old days. Many came down to the track after the game to congratulate us, and some even brought their kids. Just seeing the appreciation they had for our efforts made it all worthwhile. It's a great feeling doing something you love, but it's even more special when you see that you've affected others' lives in a positive way.

That night things couldn't have worked out better, as my team tore the house down and defeated the Brooklyn Red Devils. That seemed to set the tone for the entire season. We ended up facing and defeating the Red Devils again late in the year for the championship. With that major victory under our belts, I already had my sights set on repeating the following season. And we did.

Jim has been selected as one of the coaches for Team USA, which will be competing against Team Japan next year in Los Angeles in the Roller Game World Cup. The last one was held way back in 1993 in Tokyo and he skated in it.

As he says,"Where does all the time go?"
