"What are we at the park for except to win?

I'd trip my mother.

I'd help her up, brush her off,

tell her I'm sorry.

But mother don't make it to third."

A Memorable Sports Moment

Secret traitor to my home team

I grew up in and around Philly and all through high school - until I left for college in 1960 - I went to all the Warriors' home games, usually with my pal Mitch. There was always a pair of tickets for us at the box office because my father's school pals were Eddie Gottlieb and Dave Zinkoff - owner (and later GM) and announcer respectively.

It was great being at the (rarely sold-out) games, getting to know some of the guys who played, at least to say "hi" and "howdy" - Joe Grabowski and Tom Gola and Guy Rodgers and, of course, Al Attles and Wilt Chamberlain. We even got to go back to the locker room to say hello after a good game. Which is where my betrayal took place.

In those days the Celtics were to the Warriors what the Cowboys were to the 49ers (until The Catch and the Super Bowl years): the SOBs who knocked us out of the playoffs every year we were able to get that far. And it happened after a Celtics game that I was turned into a hometown traitor like a cold-war double agent.

I was walking back to say hi to the few guys I knew in the locker room, and there was Bill Russell coming out. And he flashed that amazing smile, which lit up the dim tunnel, and he said, "Hi, kid." It was all over in an instant; he became my hero.

Every game with the Celtics after that, I watched him in the center, owning the court. I was silently rooting for one of them, a confirmed traitor. I was not only cheering for the Emissary of Satan, going against the home team, but also betraying my father and his friends, the guys who gave us the free tickets! This was like having a picture of Stalin on your wall in a secret room during the Cold War '50s. Shameful.

And I could never admit it to anyone. Not until now. But damn: as a player and as just a general all-around really good guy, Russell WAS something else.
