"We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility.
It's easy to say: 'It's not my child, not my community,
not my world, not my problem.'
Then there are those who see the need and respond.
I consider those people my heroes."

Mission Opportunities
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance
Missions has just sent $3,000 to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance for aid to Puerto Rico. If you are looking for a safe place to give, you can join us by donating to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance. You can donate online or find where to send a check for support on this website.

Donations Needed for YouthCare
Please help us keep YouthCare teens warm and dry.
New SOCKS are a great need at this time as well as the following:
New underwear and boxers
Jeans and sneakers
Sleeping bags
First aid kits
New toiletries
Backpacks
Coats and jackets
Nonperishable foods
Gift cards (Safeway, Fred Meyer, Target, Ross, etc.)

Just pick up something when you are doing your family shopping and bring it on the last Sunday of the month when we Fill-the-Bags, or at anytime during the month to the YouthCare donation box just outside the front office door. Thank you for your generosity!

YouthCare - More Help Needed
Can you, your family or a group of friends make a meal once a month for homeless youth?  YouthCare has a program on Jackson Street that provides emergency shelter and transitional housing for 20 young people ages 18-24 who are enrolled in school or job training.  We have been preparing and delivering meals once a month but need more volunteer support to keep this going.  If you are interested, please contact Glo at [email protected].

Fill the Bin at 10:35 Worship - Oct 29th
As you may know, MIPC mission sponsors Fill the Bags at 9:15 in the gym on the last Sunday of each month. Brown bag lunches go to residents at Plymouth on Stewart and Clear Bags with socks and toiletries go to YouthCare outreach workers. Now mission is asking for help from the 10:35 congregation to fill the basket for Mercer Island Youth and Family Services (MIYFS) or another partner who has asked for our help in feeding the hungry.
On the last Sunday of the month, please bring any kind of non-perishable food items (especially soup, peanut butter, tuna, pasta and sauces) and put it in the collection bin in the Sanctuary. During the community prayer that Sunday, we will pray for those who in need of this food. Of course we welcome food for the bin any time, but it will be a main focus on the last Sunday of each month at 10:35.
2nd Grade Bible Presentation, Oct 29
Bibles will be presented to 2nd graders during all 3 worship services. Please let Kim Jewett know which service you will be attending, [email protected].
Tables of 8 - Last Chance
This is a great opportunity to get to know your church family better. Sign up, and you will be placed into groups of eight persons who will get together once a month for three months (November/December, January, February). The emphasis is on fun and fellowship! LAST CHANCE TO SIGN UP here.
Finance News
MIPC giving looked strong and on track through July, but has fallen behind our planned budget goals the past two months. We mailed giving statements in mid-September and ask that you check your statement and catch up on your pledge if you can.

In addition, every year our governing body asks for support from each member on the church rolls. This helps the Presbytery support all the congregations in the area when there is a need. The per capita contribution request is $41 per member. If you are a member of the church, please consider adding your $41 to help continue the great work of the Seattle Presbytery.

Thank you for your faithful support of your church!
Fall Adult Education
Growing In Faith Class
Sunday mornings at 9:15am in the Adult A-B Classroom
The Questions Jesus Asked , continues through Nov 19
Are you aware that Pastor Kristy's sermons this fall have been on the questions of Jesus?  Why would Jesus ask more than 300 questions in the gospels?  Shouldn't the reasons for his using so many questions be explored so that we better understand how he used them to teach so effectively?  Shouldn't we also look at particular questions that he asked in some detail?  Might it be true that he is really asking us some of the same questions right now?  Led by Carl and Halie Dodrill.

E.L.L. Class
Sunday mornings at 9:15am in the Blue Room
Class for English Language Learners. Reflections on the Scriptures used in worship, and sharing of life experiences. Led by Rev. Dr. Rita-Lou Clarke.

Women's Monday Morning Bible Study
Mondays from 10 - 11:30am in the Fireside Room
The fall study relates to "Lectio Divina," a study of the scripture that brings the verses into ordinary life. We look at the background of Lectio Divina and practice the method with passages each Monday morning. Facilitator: Halie Dodrill (206) 236-0067 or [email protected].

Wednesday Morning Acts Bible Study
Wednesdays from 11am - noon in the Fireside Room
This is a drop-in Bible study, no preparation is needed. We will continue until we complete the book of Acts. The study continues with Acts 23 when we gather again on October 25th. All are welcome, even if you have never come before! Led by Kristy Farber and Ben McConaughy.

Baha'i Celebration:
Bicentenary of the Birth of Baha'u'llah
(200-Year Celebration of the Founder's Birth)
This Sunday, October 22, 3-5 pm
Location: 7810 SE 42nd Street, Mercer Island

Two hundred years ago, in the autumn of 1817, a child was born in Persia who would come to be known as Bahá'u'lláh, the bearer of a new message from God that calls on people to recognize their common humanity in a rapidly shrinking world. The Baha'i Community of Mercer Island has invited MIPC to join them in celebrating the bicentenary of the birth of Bahá'u'lláh.  This is a once-in-a-hundred-years celebration --  we are blessed to receive the invitation.

Please RSVP to Rosemary Sixbey ([email protected] or 206-818-5438) if you plan to attend.   A carpool will be organized from MIPC.  See next week's Bridges for details.

Unknowing and Known
During September and October, MIPC is showing the work of artist Brad Namie in the courtyard. Brad's art represents the convergence of significant dreams, life events, and influences from devotional literature. Unknowing and Known explores aspects of being known by our Creator and knowing God as revealed in Jesus Christ. And yet, while knowing, we come in contact with the infinite, eternal One who extends beyond our finite senses. The artist invites you into his personal search for a deeper knowing.
 Rummage Sale News
Never too soon to be thinking about the Rummage Sale (May 11-12). For our organization purposes, the Rummage Sale team needs large clear plastic bins and portable shelving. Please take to the Youth Office hallway. Sorry, no other donations at this time!
