Donkeys, dogs and penguins... Oh my!

 Adventures in August 2017
Welcome Piowa
Pi + Iowa = Piowa

A sure sign of growth in Adventures is the need for more horses and this summer felt like
a revolving door of equine "try-outs".  Making the cut, Pi and Iowa have joined the Adventures barn family for good.

Pi is the 13 year old Friesian/Arabian bay mare pictured on the left above.  She was rescued from a "kill-pen" in Mississippi and made her way north through a few farms to get to us.  She's starting to settle in nicely at Glade Run; her weight and confidence have been steadily growing. She's been depending less on her connection to Iowa and the other geldings, and beginning to trust people more and more. It certainly seems like she'll be a great addition, not only to the therapeutic groups working on similar goals, but to the lesson riders as well since she has clearly had some schooling.

Iowa is the 10 year old Paint Draft sidling up to Pi in the picture above.  Iowa is a big strong farm boy, coming to us from the stock yards out in...you guessed it, Iowa. Iowa certainly stands out in our herd, with his beautiful coat of many colors, but he fits right in too, standing stock-yard still for the weird things we throw at him...literally, we throw beach balls and hula hoops around everywhere.

We are excited to introduce these two newcomers to you, and if you haven't been to Adventures in awhile, or ever, stop on down to the farm to meet them in person!
Taco in a Taco
Be in on the pun with a super soft tee

Why is there a donkey in a taco shell on your t-shirt?  Well, it's Taco in a taco of course! The first run of Taco tees went like hotcakes so we're expanding the selection! We've added women's style v-neck shirts and two new color options, blue and cherry red, both long and short sleeve.  We only like the super-soft style, so these are super-soft-taco-tees! Orders due by 10/1.
Super Sue to the Rescue
Singlehanded chicken run construction

Chickens are great - and a great big distraction to summer campers obsessed with our feathered friends.  Thanks to Sue Mallen, long time Adventures volunteer extraordinaire, the chickens were contained in a new run hours prior to the start of camp.  Sue claims that it's "not perfect" but what is obviously perfect is a volunteer who sees a need and fills it - even when the need is a daunting no-budget construction project piecing together leftover lumber scraps.  We love you Sue, and the chickens appreciate their "safe space"!
Way to Go Campers!
Blooming at an extraordinary rate

Adventures camper are amazing! We know it since we get to see their growth happen in real time.  Don't take our word for it though, we are so proud of our campers, we wanted to share recent email from a camper's mom and a few survey responses that we found particularly inspiring.

"Rachel 's experience with Adventure Camp was nothing less than outstanding. In fact, a few days after camp ended we went on a vacation with our extended family (including  Rachel 's 6 cousins), and everyone commented on what great progress Rach had made in interacting with her cousins 'naturally' (noting that the last visit with them was only a few months ago)."

"Bella loved her time at camp, she was so excited and proud!"

"My  daughter  opened up and bloomed at a rate that was extraordinary!"

"Camp is so amazing and accepting, it covered everything that my grandson needs. He had the b est camp EVER and made so many new friends!"

"John had such meaningful experience - the infusion of sensory work and social skills is truly unique and outstanding!"   "Can we move in?"

We could go on, and on bragging on these kiddos! These kinds of comments get us so excited for next season that we've already set the dates - so mark your calendars!

T.A.A.G. You're It Dude!
Puppy draws a crowd at local transitions event

A shout out to Value Behavioral Health  of PA  for a fun - and free - day of networking for local transition service providers.  "T.A.A.G." stands for Transition Age Advisory Group.  Y outh and young adults  between the ages of 16-29 years old were invited to attend a picnic (Taco would have been proud of the taco bar), participate in a variety of activities at  Camp Kon-O-Kwee Spencer, and peruse the exhibitors , where Dude was excited to greet them with a wag that went from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail.  Without a doubt, he proved a worthy ambassador for Glade Run.

Adventures services were well suited for this event, providing transition aged individuals opportunities to participate in therapeutic riding, camps, and as a part of the agency's new Life Development @ Glade Run - the name the agency has given to the continuum of transitional services both currently being offered and planned to be offered in the near future. For more information on the transitions programs at Glade Run, visit the website or contact Tara Harvan at (724) 452-4453 ext. 2124
Pro di gious  Penguins
The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation awards Glade Run Adventures with a $5,000 grant

According to the Penguins Foundation website,  more than $2.5 million has been awarded to 138 unique 501C3 charities o ver the past two championship seasons Penguins Foundation President Dave Soltesz stated,   "Our grants are only possible because of the outstanding fan support we receive when 50/50 raffle tickets are purchased on game nights. And we applaud our fans for the Penguins Foundation's "Back-to-Back" fundraising accomplishment."

We, of course, are thrilled to be chosen as one of this year's grant recipients and plan to further the Penguin's Foundation mission to "...provide essential life skills to young people in our community..." through camp and lesson scholarships.
