Worship Service Information & Training Sunday
The Worship & Music Ministry is requesting everyone to remain in the church following this Sunday's service for a brief - 15 minute - worship service review and training session with The Rev. Vesta Kowalski. The hope is to introduce members of the congregation to all the opportunities for volunteering and participating in the service, and encourage new people to sign up.
During the session, Vesta will review and explain each step involved in the worship service and Eucharist, including the duties of
altar guild/set up, greeter/usher, bell ringer, crucifer, lector, Prayers of the People leader, presenters of gifts, chalice bearers, assistants, etc.
All are welcome to volunteer and participate in our worship service!

Important Reminder
It has become painfully clear this past week that all of us who use the internet and email must become more vigilant about scammers and fraudsters. When you receive an email from someone you know, or that looks like an address you know, but they are asking for financial help in some form, you
must be wary. Our friends will not make such inquiries in that manner, and strangers should not. Do not let your commendable instinct to answer the call for help to override your sense of good judgement. These criminals are good at what they do, and there are few if any legal remedies available once they have gotten their money, I-Tune cards or gift certificate from you.

Insulating Windows Arrive for Island Homes
Those attending worship service this Sunday will note stacks of finished
insulating windows in the lobby area. Junior Warden Jo Jacob made the trip
to MDI and Rockland this week to pick up the 50+ finished windows. D
elivery and installation to island and area homes will begin next week.

Fall Clean Up Day Saturday, October 28th
Get your work clothes on and join us for fall clean-up day at the church Saturday, October 28th, from 9:30 to 12noon. We'll be focusing on organizing and de-cluttering the basement, putting the flower beds to sleep
for the winter, and installing our window inserts. As always, there will be snacks, goodies and the opportunity to have fun while getting the work done!

October 27-29 is Island Heritage Trust's Fall Roadside Clean-Up weekend. Bags are available at the IHT office, or regular large trash bags can be used. Please Note: there will be no roadside pick-up of bags- please take bags to your local transfer station.

198th Annual Convention of the Diocese of Maine

This year St. Brendan's will be represented at the convention by two delegates, Lis Ingoldsby and Woody Osborne. Alternates are Robert and
Julia Walkling.
For those who have not attended a Diocesan convention, this might be a nice opportunity to attend and observe the proceedings of this annual meeting.

Scripture Notes for The Twentieth Sunday After Pentecost
As we draw near the end of Matthew's Gospel, the opposition to
Jesus intensifies. Today the Pharisees seek to entrap Jesus, asking if it is lawful to pay taxes to
the emperor. The trap would be to offend either zealous Jewish patriots or else offend the ruling
class in Jerusalem including the Romans. Jesus' answer points instead to Jewish teaching that the
government, even a pagan one, has legitimate authority, but that authority cannot be allowed to
interfere with our duty toward God.
In our ongoing story of the Exodus, it is time for the Jews to move on in their journey to the land
of promise. Moses asks for a sign of God's favor. God gives two signs. One is his promise to go
with the people on their journey to the Promised Land and the other is to give Moses a glimpse
of God.
The second reading today begins several weeks of reading Paul's first letter to
the Thessalonians.
This is probably the earliest of Paul's letters. Things have
gone well since he left and he begins
by giving thanks for their faithfulness.
This church, however, had some problems and confusion
about the second coming of Christ. In coming weeks we will hear Paul's teaching about that.
Central to every gathering of Christians for worship is intercessory prayer. Our prayer is always
for the church and the world. A striking illustration was in the early Christians praying for the
emperor who was persecuting them. Our faith
calls us to pray for and to minister to all aspects of
life. The liturgy reminds us
that God is concerned for all creation and is the Savior of all.

In Our Prayers
We pray for those on our prayer list suffering and recovering from illnesses,
especially Wilma Turner, William, Pat Stoneburner, Tony Stoneburner, Holly, Carolyn Angel, Colin MacNaught, Shannon Cormier, Nancy Stearns, Daniel Harriman, Diane, John, Tom, Claudia, Hannah Scaife, Marcia Scott, Bob Harris, Sen. John McCain, Henry 'Hank' Millon, Jennifer Hulsey and her family Byron, Ben, and Clair. We pray, also, for those who love and care for them.
We pray for those struggling with addiction and mental illness.
We pray for all those receiving care through Neighbor Care and for all the residents of the Island Nursing Home, the Northern Bay Residential Facility,
and their families.
We pray for the dying, and those who have died. We remember also those who mourn.
We pray for the victims of gun violence-in our cities and towns, in our schools, in our places of worship, and in our homes.
We pray for the victims of the violence of armed conflicts around the world. We pray for those made refugees by the violence of armed conflicts. We pray for the victims of terrorist attacks everywhere.
We pray for all who suffer the effects of domestic violence and the violence
of bullying in our schools.
We pray for all peacemakers, and all those who work for justice.
We pray for all those serving in the armed forces of our country,
remembering, especially, Craig, Chris, and Graham.
We pray for all who govern, and we pray for the concerns of our local community, remembering, especially, our children, our young people, and
our isolated elderly.
We pray for Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury; Suheil, Bishop of Jerusalem; Michael, our Presiding Bishop; Steve, our Bishop; for the members of our vestry; and for all our members, whose ministries are varied and far-reaching.
In the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer, we pray
for the Sustainable Development Goals of The Episcopal Church and United Nations.
For our Ecumenical Partners and the Maine Council of Churches.
For all who are preparing for, and will attend, the 198th Annual Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Maine on October 28th.
In the Anglican Cycle of Prayer, we pray for
On the Island and Peninsula, we pray for
Deer Isle/Sunset Congregational Church.
