"I think I have already signed some scrap of paper for every man, woman and child in the United States. What do they do with all those scraps of paper with my signature on it?"

~Vida Blue

MLB pitcher and broadcaster

AL MVP and Cy Young Award, 1971

"I feel we're all overpaid. Every professional athlete is overpaid. I got a phenomenal contract--much more money than I ever thought I'd make. I wouldn't say I'm embarrassed by it, but deep down I know I'm not worth it. To my shame, though,

I have to admit I asked for it."

~Fred Patek

MLB shortstop

At 5'4", he was the shortest player of his time

There are 64 days left until the MLB All-Star Game, Tuesday, July 15, Target Field,
Minneapolis, Minnesota

 Sports Quiz

Question: When the Golden State Warriors won the deciding game of their only NBA championship series, who was the head coach at the final buzzer?

If you answered Al Attles, you're close, but incorrect. The right answer is Joe Roberts.

In game four of the 1975 NBA finals, Warriors head coach Al Attles was assessed two technical fouls and ejected from the game. This happened about five minutes into the first quarter at the Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland.

A confrontation on the court broke out between Warriors superstar Rick Barry and reserve Mike Riordan of the Washington Bullets. Attles tried to intervene because he feared Barry would be thrown out of the game by referee Richie Powers, and the Warriors would be at a huge disadvantage. Referee Manny Sokol approached Attles and told him that Powers wouldn't put up with this ... and ejected him. Roberts, Attles' assistant coach, took over, and the Warriors won by one point for a four-game sweep of the favored Bullets.

The above question was submitted by Nick Curran, the NBA's director of public relations, 1969-76. A full account of the Golden State Warriors' winning the 1975 NBA championship, contributed by Curran, will appear shortly in the new Baseball edition of the Ultimate Sports Guide.

Memorable Moment

My all-time favorite photo

Here it is, that's me on the left, releasing a red-tailed hawk I'd just caught, weighed, measured and banded, on Slacker Hill in Marin County. When you cross the Golden Gate Bridge going north, that's the BIG hill on your left. During migration, the hawks stack up in southern Marin County until a sunny day gives them enough uplift to get across the bridge. As you can see, it was a foggy day and the bird went "SQUAWK!!" and disappeared into the fog.

That was the first year of the all-volunteer Raptor Migration Project, tracking the Pacific Flyway. My wife and I trained those people.

The work entails getting up early and sitting in a blind and seeing hawks coming across the valley from a mile or more away and (this is the best part) calling them down from the sky with lure birds and trapping them, then handling them to get the data and put on the zinc band and then sending them on their way. If that seems like fun (full disclosure: it's scientifically useful but it's also a delight as well as it's a rare privilege to handle wild raptors), you can contact U.S. Fish and Game in San Francisco. The agency will tell you how to volunteer in the program. Some catch and band, others watch and count from the top of Slacker Hill.

Send us your Memorable Sports Moment and we will share them with our readers.
