"Baseball is the only game left for people. To play basketball, you have to be 7 feet 6 inches. To play
football, you have to be the same width."

~Bill Veeck

Franchise owner and promoter of MLB

Baseball Hall of Fame, 1991

(1914-1986)

"A game of great charm in the adoption of mathematical measurements to the timing of human movements, the exactitudes and adjustments of physical ability to hazardous chance. The speed of the legs, the dexterity of the body, the grace of the swing, the elusiveness of the slide -- these are the features that make Americans everywhere forget the last syllable of a man's last name or the pigmentation of his skin."

~Branch Rickey, MLB catcher, manager and executive

Broke Major League Baseball's color barrier by signing African American player Jackie Robinson and later signed

Roberto Clemente

Baseball Hall of Fame, 1967

There are 11 days left until the 2014 NFL draft,
May 8-10.

Memorable Sports Moment

That kid in the outfield

My father was a fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers, and I remember attending games with him before I even understood the game. (Does anyone ever completely understand baseball, with all its subtleties and complications?) Once in a great while he would trek reluctantly up to the Bronx to see a Yankee game. And when he was traveling he would catch a minor league or industrial league game, or buy a ticket (generally for 25 cents) to see a barnstorming team play some local aggregation.

At one time my brother and I were attending school in a small town in central New Jersey. Dad drove out there on a bright Sunday in springtime, picked us up in his maroon 1946 Hudson coupe, motored into Trenton and bought us a couple of delicious steaks for lunch.

Then we headed to a rickety wooden ballpark where the Trenton Giants, a farm team of the then New York Giants, were playing. I don't know who their opponent was. My memory wants to say they were the great Yankee farm club the Newark Bears, but I really don't know.

We sat in splintery pine stands and watched the contest. I don't recall paying very close attention to the game. At my early age I was more interested in popcorn or ice cream.

But suddenly my father said, "Will you look at that! They've got a colored boy in the outfield!"

A colored boy.

Want to guess who that was?

Sure, you got it on the first try. And he really was a boy. A teenager. Willie Howard Mays.

I've tried to research that day, and all I can find on Willie Mays is that he played for the Birmingham Black Barons before signing with the Giants as a free agent in 1950. He made his debut with the Giants in 1951, apparently without ever playing in the minors.

Was it all a dream? Was that someone other than Willie Mays in the outfield, maybe Monte Irvin? I don't really know. But it's my memory, and it's precious. I know I didn't make the whole thing up.

If it wasn't Willie Mays, it should have been!
