ELCA Good Gifts
The Good Gift of a water well

ELCA Good Gifts are a creative, meaningful way to support the ministries of the ELCA that mean the most to you and your loved ones. The items in the catalog lift up examples of work being done in different projects and programs supported by funds from the ELCA: the ELCA Fund for Leaders, ELCA Global Church Sponsorship, ELCA New Congregations, ELCA Vision for Mission, ELCA World Hunger and Lutheran Disaster Response. Each of these programs is a long-term, partnership-based ministry that focus on the needs identified by local congregations and global companion churches and their communities.

When you give an ELCA Good Gift you are supporting work within a specific category of ministry. For example, when you give a gift to "stock a health clinic," your donation goes on to support the health care ministries of ELCA World Hunger where needed most. This allows our global companions to determine how these funds can make the biggest impact in their local contexts, and ensure that our work is sustainable.

Renaissance and Reformation Exhibit at LACMA
Los Angeles County Museum of Art presents
German Art in the Age of
Dürer and Cranach"
November 20, 2016 - March 26, 2017 at the Resnick Pavilion
5905 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA, 90036

Coinciding with the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, "Renaissance and Reformation: German Art in the Age of Dürer and Cranach" brings to Los Angeles some of the greatest achievements of German Renaissance art.  Artists such as Albrecht Dürer, Lucas Cranach, Hans Holbein, Mathias Grünwald, Tilman Riemenschneider, Peter Vischer, and a host of others reflected a new vision of the world in their works. The period was marked by conflicts, civil wars, and complex relationships with neighboring countries, but also witnessed a flourishing of many states and cities, reflected in the skills of their craftsmen. The exhibition comprises over 100 pieces, including paintings, drawings, sculptures, arms and armors, as well as decorative arts.

"The exhibition brings together some of the finest works by the greatest artists, painters, sculptors, and craftsmen of the period," says J. Patrice Marandel, the Robert H. Ahmanson Chief Curator of European Art at LACMA. "We are very pleased to present the show on the momentous occasion of the Reformation's 500th anniversary."

Consider organizing a group from your congregation, fellowship, or ministry group to visit LACMA as part of your Reformation 500 observance! Admission to "Renaissance and Reformation" is part of LACMA's general admission - no special tickets are necessary. As part of their "Arts for NexGen" program, LACMA offers free membership to anyone 17 years or younger, which comes with free general admission for one adult. In addition, residents of LA County receive free general admission after 3:00 p.m. on weekdays.

Holy Trinity's Jesse Barfield to Speak at #WSYG17

Deacon Jesse R. Barfield III is a native of Los Angeles, California, who grew up in the Inglewood community. A  long-standing member of Holy Trinity, Jesse received his guidance and call to the ministry through his involvement within the church and under his mentor, Pastor James Lobdell.  He has served as a Deacon on the ministerial staff of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church for the last four years, and has been asked to preach and participate at many of its sister churches.

Jesse's aspiration to reach a growing generation h as led him to serve youth ministry in many capacities . His charismatic style of preaching and humorous personality is a feature of his sermons.
Deacon Jesse's ministry is best accurately described in Isiah 61:1-2: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek, he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.

The  2017 Western States Youth Gathering, held from June 28 - July 2, 2017 at Cal Lutheran in Thousand Oaks, will use the theme of DREAM BIG as a way to peek into the way God is calling out to us and then through us, calling us to act.
Time to stop allowing the voices of others to dictate the dreams you have. Time to start relying more on the influence, grace, and power of God to help your dreams into reality. After all...God planted those big dreams there to begin with.

#GivingTuesday - November 29

On Thursday, November 24 we celebrate Thanksgiving here in the United States. It is a day to think with gratitude about the blessings we have received.  After Thanksgiving, the commercial holidays of Black Friday and Cyber Monday are upon us, but so is #GivingTuesday! The ELCA has been observing this global day of giving for several years, and this year keep an eye on social media and get ready to encourage friends, family and congregation members to give toward a just world where all are fed.

With blessings from the Synod Hunger Team,
Sheri Groenveld
