Memorable Sports Moment

Nick Curran - Eileen

Wilt Chamberlain -

A true hero

Eileen Curran

The name Wilt Chamberlain evokes many basketball memories, but the Wilt I remember is from 1977.

Wilt was standing in the middle of a volleyball court at the San Diego Concourse, volleyball palmed over his head, shouting above the crowd, "Is there a doctor in the house?"

At the time Wilt was president of the International Volleyball Association, a league located primarily in Southern California. He would have known that one of the team owners was a doctor, but would the doctor be attending the game that night? Within seconds, Dr. Jimmie Valentine bolted from the stands and crossed the court to the scorers table, where a 2-year-old boy was choking and starting to turn blue. The other players on the court seemed frozen in time.

Wilt stood with arms outstretched to stop the game until Valentine, holding the boy by one leg, administered a slap to his back and dislodged the popcorn stuck in his throat. He saved the little boy's life. The crowd, in stunned silence during the crisis, erupted when Wilt signaled to restart the game. The boy was out of danger.

Several days later, Wilt would award an autographed game ball to Valentine.

I tell this story because the little boy is my son, Ted. My husband was a vice president of the International Volleyball Association and Wilt was the president who had recruited him. Sitting in the stands, I saw my son start to choke. All I could think of was that there would be medical personnel at the scorers table, so I raced down to the court carrying him in my arms. A nurse unsuccessfully tried to clear the obstruction. I was starting to panic when Wilt went into action. His image remains in my mind to this day. I have read many articles in the media about Wilt but none captured the aspect I saw that day. Wilt, the larger-than-life athlete, selflessly assessing the situation, taking action and helping to save a life. In subsequent years, whenever I met Wilt, he would ask, "How's your son?" I would tell him and thank him again for being there that fateful day. He was always most gracious.

Wilt's many accomplishments are well documented in the records he established to earn his place in the Basketball Hall of Fame. This was probably an unrecorded episode in his life. I suspect there are others, too. This is the Wilt I will always remember.
