"Baseball is almost the only orderly thing in a very unorderly world. If you get three strikes, even the best lawyer in the world can't get you off."

~Bill Veeck

Franchise owner and promoter of MLB

Baseball Hall of Fame, 1991

(1914-1986)

"I do not think I exaggerate one bit when I say that legalization could jeopardize the very existence of professional baseball and other professional sports. It is our position that any form of gambling on professional baseball games, legal or illegal, poses a threat to the integrity of our game, exposes it to grave economic danger and threatens a disservice to the public interest."

~Bowie Kuhn

Major League Baseball commissioner, 1969-1984

(1926-2007)

The 2014 major league baseball season is at its midway point, and only one team has not used a rookie this season: the Oakland A's.

Memorable Sports Moment
Howard - Ashol-Pan

Howard Pearlstein

Ashol-Pan,

golden eagle huntress

Howard Pearlstein

This is Ashol-Pan, a 13-year-old Mongolian girl, and I know the feeling you see on her face.

If you could see my face on my raptor photo, it would look just like this ... almost. But Jane and I used to do this - not in Mongolia, of course, but with a golden eagle around the same size.

The feeling is one of just having crossed some biological border into a new world where all things are all things ... and that new world is saying: "It's all good."

Twenty years later I can still feel the huge feet of the female golden eagle Nokomos as she flew full speed to me after Jane cast her (what Ashol-Pan just did in this photo), coming to me for food at 30 mph, then a foot from my face, putting out her wings, stilled - stopped dead in the air - and lowered gently onto my arm.

I still feel that powerful grasp, as if we'd crossed a barrier and wild nature gave me a fist bump. Saying, "It's OK; we're all right here."

Most children are a little intimidated by golden eagles. Kazakh boys in western Mongolia start learning how to use the huge birds to hunt for foxes and hares at the age of 13, when the eagles sit heavily on their undeveloped arms. Asher Svidensky, a photographer and travel writer, shot five boys learning the skill as well as the girl, Ashol-Pan.

"To see her with the eagle was amazing," he said. "She was a lot more comfortable with it, a lot more powerful with it and a lot more at ease with it."

The Kazakhs of the Altai mountain range in western Mongolia are the only people that hunt with golden eagles, and today there are around 400 practicing falconers.

Ashol-Pan, the daughter of a celebrated hunter, may well be the country's only apprentice huntress.
